Connections 295 - NYT Word Game - 1 April 2024

- The New York Times is back with another new daily word game, Connections! This is heavily inspired by "The Wall" from the BBC quiz show Only Connect. You must sort the sixteen given words into thematically appropriate groups of four--and you only have a few opportunities for error! I don't know if I'll be solving this every day but I'm giving it a shot for now at least. We'll see how it goes. Let me know how you like it!

Glad I was not the only one who got the yellow category thinking it would be sandwich ingredients; only to find that while they were right that it was a category, they were wrong about the category theme.
Same here.
First time I've ever "beaten" Chris on any of his NY Times puzzles as I did this one in under a minute. The score now stands at 1067 for Chris and 1 for me :)
5:35 There are separate emojis for sheep and ram. 🐑 🐏
Sheep is generic, male is ram, female is ewe.
i was so excited for this solve hahaha what a treat
I laughed out loud when I opened this puzzle. It's always fun to see April.Fool's Day pranks. I completed these in the same order. Also thought we were dealing with sandwich ingredients, and took a bit to realize the sheep was a ewe. I enjoyed this as a change of pace, and find it fascinating that visual thinkers did well today.
Today was a fun one!
at 5:24 Chris becomes a mario brother 😅
lmaooooo
So it's Ewe. I cracked it til the last category, and knowing what it is I still couldn't work out that the sheep stood for ewe.
Solved this one in under a minute thanks to years of Only Connect practise haha
Loved this one, and solved it in the same order as you.
3:50 I'm screaming ☔🌧️ funny one for a second i thought it was a new game!😅 solved it in the same order and thought yellow was sandwich ingredients 😅
I'm not familiar with emoji speak but I get the impression that it's not a 1:1 relationship with words but rather the image could mean different things in context. So there are probably multiple words that could go with each image and the category grouping would use one of the possible valid words for each image.
After the initial shock, I had fun with this one.
For some reason, neither the teapot or the saw showed on my screen. I just guessed on the blanks, after I had three for a group, since I had errors to spare, and I got lucky in that my first guesses for each was correct. I did successfully solve all 4 groups.
The streaming service TUBI works as an anagram!
I got today in record time for me (by far). I thought afterwards- if you translated the emoji to the word it represents, would be the most bog standard connections we’ve ever had.
It just shows how differently our brains work- I’m a very visual learner and usually have difficulty scanning the words on the connections board and retaining all the words in my head, so enjoyed todays one as a wee change- thanks NYT!
What a puzzle for today!
The lettuce looked like celery on my computer, so I was really confused about who was using celery as a slang term for money
I enjoyed this one. Teapot nearly caught me.
Interestingly I solved the eye ewe bee tea first.
I did not get this one because 2 symbols did not show up in my puzzle. I just got 2 empty squares.
Me, too. I was missing the saw and the teapot.
Didn't really like this one. But that might have been different if the saw and teapot weren't invisible for me...
Connections today was a lot less bad than I thought it would be. I got "Ingredients of a Sandwich" immediately, and I had already noticed Eye and Bee, then saw Tea and Ewe and got the purple. Then I already noticed Plane and Train, and then Rain and Brain, and then noticed the last category right before I submitted it
I solved it, but not with about the same amount of struggle as Chris. Missed one because i picked saw (for sawbuck) rather than cheese for money. I've never heard of cheese as money, or wedge for that matter.
when he said “Scream” i instantly thought of the movie and then I realised ET and Dracula were movies too, horror? Eh ET isn’t really. But Saw is definitely a movie. I usually call 😱 “shock” so i didn’t think of it
god damn it cant believe i forgot about Alien
My emoji's looked different since I was on my android phone!
Also for the purple category I was way off track but still got it right. I was thinking along the lines of "Black variations of them are not good". Black SHEEP of the family, Black EYE, black BEE I'd never heard of but thought reasonably could be something, and then for the last one I thought it was in reference to "Calling the KETTLE black". Didn't realize that emoji just meant tea and not the container itself.
Interesting! I'm on an Android phone and mine looked just like this.
I used Google chrome/google pixel and had different emoji as well!
Cheese is Wedge… as in a wedge of money I think
I think they were going for cheddar, there's only one emoji for cheese, so it's kind of a catch all. True, it looks like Swiss--albeit a yellow version.
well and truly April fooled, got none of them, have never heard any of those terms used for money!
I don't think the sheep emoji can be identified as a ewe specifically, you just have to use your imagination on this one. Nice solve!
The emojis actually are officially defined as Ewe 🐑 and Ram 🐏
@@rbrosz really? I didn't know that! Interesting.
You could spell BITE. 😊
The letters were B, I, T and U.
@@timegentleman So the category could have been "letters in the word BUILT". :p
Loved this one, super clever.
Very salty that I wasn’t able to get it today tho. Totally looked past tea as teapot or kettle and then picked sheep for silence of the lambs (and I just made too many mistakes at that point)
I’m salty because I saw ewe first. We had like 3 different puzzles that used ewe instead of sheep so it was ready on the mind how did I not think of T 😂😂
