One of my favorite things about Buffy in the film and the series is she doesn’t hesitate to redirect a guy’s hand or face if he tries to touch her uninvited. She’s allowed (by the narrative) to respond with force in response to assault. I’ve always appreciated that.
Something I never noticed before; when Buffy meets Cordelia, Cordelia say something like “you went to Hemery, right?” which is the name of the school here. Only took me 20 years to make that connection…go me. :)
That's Stephen Root. He's been in "Office Space," "Dodgeball," "Idiocracy," "True Blood," and a whole bunch of other things. Side note, again, very much enjoying Sam's Fashion Corner.
The "Or she could go for what's behind door number 3" is a reference to the American game show "Let's Make a Deal". David Arquette with his "c'mon! c'mon!" is imitating the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. "Aren't there times you feel... less than fresh?" is a reference to a feminine hygiene product commercial, I think from the 70s or 80s.
Just discovered you guys about a day ago & I am fascinated at the amount of commentary time spent dissecting Buffy characters' costumes. 😆😂😆 Between the differences in generational and/or cultural perspectives; these looong breaks can be hilarious, or forehead-smacking (The fashion -- & several other things you seem perplexed by -- was certainly noted, but not that big a deal to OG viewers). Anyway, the jacket at 4:25 is a (modified) classic motorcycle jacket, or "MC." There are also slimmer/smoother cut variations, that may not have belts/ buckles around the waist & wrists, pockets, or the zip is in the center (as opposed to diagonally placed), more referred to as "Biker Jackets" (See pics of Peter Fonda from Easy Rider.). Bomber jackets can be made from leather or cloth, are more shapeless than MCs, with elastic gathers at bottom & wrist. The easiest image reference might be actual WWII bomber pilots (Hint in the name 😜), or in a case of truly unfortunate perversion, the puffy black or green jackets worn by skinheads in the UK in the Punk years (& beyond). Colored MCs date back at least to the 50's & were mostly worn by women (white & pink were popular). There was a Canadian 80's pop group (Loverboy - "Workin' For The Weekend") that made red leather their whole cheesy gimmick. Men + colored leather + uphill struggle (Unless you were Prince, or 80's-prime Eddie Murphy), but colored MCs are readily available. Some MCs with colored accents are amazing. Also, most colored leathers will chip over time; revealing the faded, unpolished black, brown, or gray leather beneath. Thanks so much for the fun reactions. 🧛♀😁🧛
Everyone in my family enjoyed the Buffy movie and it's why we started watching the series when it came out. I'm surprised there was no comment about future 2 time Oscar winner Hillary Swank. The original Bomber Jackets were dark brown tanned sheepskin with fleece lining ... motorcycle jackets were black. That familiar face from the school is Stephen Root of Office Space, also voices in King of the Hill. My favoritepart was Paul Reubens death scene, I found it so funny, the only missed opportunity was instead of him kicking the wall it's too bad he didn't have an actual bucket to kick.
YES! I thought I was the only one who didn't think this movie was complete trash. I used to *love* this movie when I was a "kid"... It's the main reason I started watching the show, or that I even knew to watch the show... I mean I would have anyways cause vampires were always my jam, but this movie def helped. Stephen Root is also in Dodgeball.
There are so many actors in this who either had a good career or were widely known up to that point (Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, Paul Reubens, Luke Perry) and a bunch of credited and uncredited actors who you can find in other movies in the 1980s and 1990s (Kristy Swanson, Sasha Jensen, Michelle Abrams, Alexis Arquette, Ricki Lake), and some who wound up with longer lasting careers (Hilary Swank, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Ben Affleck, Thomas Jane). Granted, some of them are basically background vampires or basketball players in this, but it's fun to watch this just to see who went farther in movies.
@browniewin4121 So it's a classic in your family? :) I mean, there wasn't much to say about her in this movie. That's right. I'm seeing now that it's essentially a pilot's jacket. Seems so obvious lol Yeah, that guy has done a lot. And he was in B99, yay! I like that scene. Hilarious. Adding the bucket would be on brand for that scene - Maria
Donald Sutherland was constantly changing his lines, and the director allowed it because he was so famous. Most of the humor was lost because of this. After the film was finished, Sutherland did everything in his power to try to keep it from being released. I love Rutger Hauer in this role though, he is really having fun. 😂
How to prove the villain is pure evil. Have him eat the kitty. The reverse of ‘save the cat,’ the storytelling standard to prove a character is a good person.
I love this movie so much. I grew up with a big collection of 80s B movies recorded by my dad off the TV, so this fit right in and brought me a lot of joy. In particular, Paul Reuben'ss death scene has been my favorite death scene since childhood. So silly and over the top - it's a lot of fun to act out.
This came out when I was a pre-teen. I loved it. It was stupid but charming. All these years later, I don’t know if I could watch it again, but it still brings fond memories.
I TOTALLY HEAR YOU (pun not intended but embraced) ON THE AUDIO THING. I actually have autism too, so coupled with the audio thing you mention, plus my autism making it hard for my brain to quickly process even when I do hear (sometimes people have to ask me the same question multiple times before I can answer, not because I don't hear them, but because my brain isn't doing the instant processing that neurotypicals brains do) and so I always have subtitles on as it helps to focus my brain.
The excuse in the show for vampires entering the school is the "welcome" sign on the front of the school. Its in Latin and Angelus translates it to "Enter all ye who seek knowledge" - so its kind of a loophole. Lol.
There is a point when they are talking about the vampires not being invited in to the gym, and yellow jacket girl pops up behind them and says i invited them their seniors.
Your Teddy is adorable❤… I’m nearly 50 and I still love my plushies. By the way, the Lost Boys was 1987 this was 1992, so there was definitely a different vein of Vampire culture between them.
I treat the buffy movie the same way I do the 90s Doctor Who movie. I enjoy it for what it is but mostly disregard and see it as a one off that exists within the universe but in an alternate timeline.
One of the things with this movie is Merrick comes off like a creepy old man. The main villain also comes off like a creepy old man. How are you supposed to differentiate who Buffy, a teenage girl, can actually trust when Merrick acts the same as the villain only without the fangs and cape.
When I was in highschool in 1992 a few people would dip out of school and head to the nearby coffee shop to smoke cigarettes and drink coffee. Coffee was 65 cents. Pie was about $1.00.
This movie came out when I was, like, 9 or 10, so it was perfect to me at the time. I made my mom take me to see it in theaters 4 times. It's funny to rewatch it as an adult and realize just how campy it is.
Rutger Hauer was intimidating in Blade Runner and The Hitcher. A small role for future Oscar winner Hillary Swank. Seth Green was in the film, but his scenes were cut. He ended up on the VHS packaging.
@TheBuffSummer The Hitcher is an intense horror film. I loved him in Blade Runner. I can't remember what Seth even did. Via reddit: "He originally played a nerd that the above* jock character made fun of, and he was supposed to be the one who turned him into a vampire." *He is a vampire in the picture on the VHS box and is attacking a jock played by Sasha Jenson. Seth is not pictured on the bluray packaging. A year later Sasha and Ben Affleck would meet again in Dazed and Confused. Another, "Wait, was that baby Ben Affkeck?" movie.
I’m so glad they made Giles less creepy when they introduced him. OK he started badly with the book reveal in ep 1 but atleast he didn’t sound like he was luring a young girl into a graveyard to make a statistic of her. Merrick seemed to have no clue that without context he sounded skeezy. Donald’s delivery didn’t help. He went all in with the creep factor.
While Whedon picked a few things to keep from the movie (like Hemery being the school Buffy went to, Merrick being her first Watcher, etc.), Pike never showed up on the show. But if you ever read any of the Buffy novels that came out when the show was airing, Pike actually does show up in Sunnydale! Though they didn't describe his looks as matching Luke Perry sadly. (Yes, I remember that only because I remember literally blurting out at my book, "Pike isn't blond!" lol) This was such a fun reaction to watch, I'm glad you guys decided to watch the movie too!
Whedon was inspired by the 80s cult classic Night of the Comet (The dog is even named Buffy!) and the evolution from that to the series is made even clearer when you wedge this movie in the middle. Noting the similarities between these is always fun.
@@Remma1637 It's just everything you could want in a movie like it. You can see a lot of Xander in Hector too although this is the one earlier counterpart I prefer.
Back then, anybody could walk into the schools. I graduated high school in 1992 and would visit my high school any time I was in town to visit my former teachers. It was never a problem. Of course now-a-days, you can't do that. But it was kind of nice to just walk in and visit.
Amilyn's death scene, the whole point was to ham it up, almost like making fun of Buffy.... but it was *so* iconic, that the after-credits sequence has him *still* in his death-throes!
I somehow lost my old teddy bear.... I mean in theory he's in my basement somewhere, but I've had a few cases where something just vanished completely. Like when I was a kid one of my video game cartridges fell behind my desk, then wasn't there when I pulled the desk away from the wall. Decades later when my mother passed away and we had to clean out her house... that video game cartridge was still never found.
That’s so weird! I had an entire crate of original Babysitters’ Club books go missing from our garage. I still think my parents probably gave them away without remembering and it didn’t matter much once I’d outgrown them, but it sucked when my niece wanted to read them a few years ago and only the first 12 or so got a reprint.
When it comes to the Dolby line--*everyone* in LA acts like they're a cinema connoisseur. It's honestly totally on brand. People are mega-snobby about movies down there.
There's Buffy the Origin Omnibus that not only brings Joss Whedon's original script in comic book form (with updates based on the shows continuity) but a few stories that lead from the film to the first episode. It shows how Buffy and Pike separated as they slayed together which caused Buffy to get into more trouble. This ultimately caused Buffys parents to divorce.
@@TheBuffSummerDefinitely check out at least the ones in canon. Besides that Omnibus check out Season 8 & 9 of Buffy. Angel: After the Fall is Season 6 of Angel with Angel & Faith working as Season 7 and taking place after Season 9 of Buffy. You also have Season 10-12 of Buffy, a Spike book, a few one shots and now the Slayers audiobook (this one has no involvement with Whedon, so can possibly be skipped). Here's an idea if you do want to include the books on your channel. In depth reviews of each issue or complete seasons. You can start as a test run with the Origin comic if you want. There is a motion comic for Season 8 too.
1:09:52 Point of clarification: Pike said he couldn't *move* his legs, because Buffy was sitting on them. He can still *feel* them, but he's effectively immobile, because Buffy is currently sitting on his lower body.
I really do love this movie! It's fascinating to see the threads that come into play into the show, especially knowing that the show is based on Joss Whedon's original script. I am curious if Maria or anyone else here read the tie-in books that were released, there is a great one called Sins of the Father in which Pike shows up in Sunnydale
Funny story, I saw this movie when it was released on VHS and instantly loved it as a kid. When the show came out years a few later I shunned it because it wasn’t the movie and thought it looked stupid. I didn’t even catch an episode until halfway through season 2 and then I fell in love with the show even more than the movie. I love them both for different reasons now.
I loved this movie so much as a kid. My best friend at the time and I had the entire movie memorized and would quote it ALL the time. We could even for awhile recite the entire movie verbatim.
I love this movie! Its not a masterpiece (some story elements were odd choices), but its so funny and kicked off the series (and my love of/ desire to be a badass warrior woman). Paul Rueben's death scene also lives rent free in my head. SPOILER WARNING: Pike always seemed like a proto-Spike to me. Kinda bad boy, falls in love with the slayer, his hair and leather jacket at the dance, and the fact that his name is on letter away. Not super relevant, but I love Maria's look in this video. Its just cool to me.
Now I can talk about the rest haha It's far from a masterpiece, but it is a fun 80s movie with some good acting and a few great lines and one awesome death scene! :D I'm so with you on the love of/desire to be a badass warrior woman! That makes sense. As far as I remember Joss said that he pretty much split this character into Xander and Spike, of course, giving Xander more of his personality and leaving Spike with the cool shit from Pike. It is very relevant and very much appreciated :) - Maria
Also don't know if you missed it or it got cut fro your version, but there is a part where one of her friends says "I invited them!" and Buffy looks angry then she says "What? They're seniors!"
I think tying her hair with the ribbon is purely to keep her hair off her face as she sleeps. No one wants greasy bangs because your forehead was oily.
Supposedly this was Paul Reubens' first major role after he was arrested in a porn theatre and he accepted it on the condition that he look "as much like my mugshot as possible".
I would consider it a prequel because it does give a lot of Buffy background. Yes, the series did shuffle a little bit. However it was not what Joss wanted when they put it together. It was too goofy silly in his opinion. I have to agree but it is fun either way.
Some of the backstory is used in the show, but they still seem like AUs of one another. They have flashbacks to Buffy's backstory on the show eventually. There is also a comic book that revamps this to fit in with the show.
I mean, it gives some background, but even the primary thing of burning down the gym didn't happen there. I'm with Sam on considering it an alternate version of a prequel. I do want to read the comic, The Origin, as it's close to what the original script was. Curious about how the events unfolded there and the characterization of everybody. I also think they did a great job of showing her backstory in the show, so I'm good with that. I agree that it's not as good as the show in terms of storytelling, mostly, but it is fun, I'm with you - Maria
I actually really like the softer voices that are possible to use now in film, but it has to be done well. If it suits the scene and the other actors I think it can be good. Presence is important, though, whatever your volume.
How funky is your chicken? How funky is your chicken? How loose is your goose? Our goose is totally loose. So come on all you hog fans, so come on all you hog fans, And shake your caboose. And shake your caboose. Let's be real, Cordelia wishes she had lines like this to cheer.
I started watching this movie a couple of weeks ago but I just couldn’t get through it.. not even half way. But I’ll happily watch you two react to it.
sooo it would be silly to talk of historical acuracy in regards to costuming in this film buuuut obviously the dark ages costumes are Y2K european afternoon tv movie material, however, they didn't shy off from dressing the maiden in colors, and in that regards, it's more accurate than most historical drama today
What's shocking about this mess is that there are two future Oscar winners in it. Yeah, I really hate it (because it's awfulness is what stopped me from watching the series until the end of S3). RIP Luke Perry and Paul Reubens.
@@Madbandit77 Ahh well, I included the first two because they died relatively recently and were quite young but yes, RIP to Rutger Hauer, a truly marvelous actor who somehow decided he was going to be in...this.
@Shadowman4710 for as bad as it is, it could have been a lot less enjoyable, but I found the jokes funny, the actors entertaining and the visuals at least interesting.
So the "are you calling me a man" is because back then, he would have expected to just be called a "guy" or a name like "burnout" or some slang. Being called a man brings an air of respect in how she sees him though she was probably talking about the watcher. On the other end, he might also have just thought she was calling him old.
If you actually wanted to give the comics a review, there are digital copies available, so you could screen share to your recording software as you talk about it possibly?

You’ve obviously have never seen THE HITCHER. Rutger H is beyond intimidating. He’s absolutely chilling. In the show Angelous says that the school sign invites in anybody seeking knowledge. That’s why he can come in freely. I believe it’s in PASSION when he’s in the classroom with Jenny and the computer is burning.

Maria! 😮 The high ponytail and denim look is so cute!! 😍 You look amazing x
Thank you so much! I really like it, but the ponytail hurts afterward and I like that less haha - Maria
Wow. Does he meet Spike?
Funny story, I saw this movie when it was released on VHS and instantly loved it as a kid. When the show came out years a few later I shunned it because it wasn’t the movie and thought it looked stupid. I didn’t even catch an episode until halfway through season 2 and then I fell in love with the show even more than the movie. I love them both for different reasons now.
How were you able not to let the show overshadow the movie in your mind?
@@alicequinn505 I think you misread my comment.
SPOILER WARNING:
Pike always seemed like a proto-Spike to me. Kinda bad boy, falls in love with the slayer, his hair and leather jacket at the dance, and the fact that his name is on letter away.
Not super relevant, but I love Maria's look in this video. Its just cool to me.
Oh my, big spoiler in this. Please, add the spoiler warning! - Maria
Now I can talk about the rest haha
It's far from a masterpiece, but it is a fun 80s movie with some good acting and a few great lines and one awesome death scene! :D
I'm so with you on the love of/desire to be a badass warrior woman!
I gotta start doing that - Maria
This is gonna be fun!
True true 😋 - Maria
I love this movie so much. I also recommend watching the movie Night of the Comet. The main character in that movie is an early inspiration for Buffy.
I love how they said Rutger Hauer wasn't intimidating, lol! Apparently, they have never seen Blade Runner or The Hitcher.
I’ve seen both. This just ain’t that 🤷♂️ - Sam
So come on all you hog fans, so come on all you hog fans,
And shake your caboose. And shake your caboose.
Let's be real, Cordelia wishes she had lines like this to cheer.
I still sing this randomly 😂
The school doesn't work because it's a public building
I know, that's how it should be - Maria
Since you commented more than once about not getting what people say, you can add captions ^^ it would also help us that need subtitles.
I started watching this movie a couple of weeks ago but I just couldn’t get through it.. not even half way. But I’ll happily watch you two react to it.
Fair enough. Hope you enjoyed our video for it :) - Maria
@@TheBuffSummer Thanks Maria. I did enjoy it. (:
It can't be a prequel, it came out 5 years before the TV show
I've never seen the Buffy movie. I'm excited to watch this after work!
That's cool! Hope you enjoy our vid for it 😊 - Maria
This film is a prequel in the same way Stargate is a prequel of SG-1
sooo it would be silly to talk of historical acuracy in regards to costuming in this film buuuut obviously the dark ages costumes are Y2K european afternoon tv movie material, however, they didn't shy off from dressing the maiden in colors, and in that regards, it's more accurate than most historical drama today
What's shocking about this mess is that there are two future Oscar winners in it.
Yeah, I really hate it (because it's awfulness is what stopped me from watching the series until the end of S3).
RIP Luke Perry and Paul Reubens.
Why? They had to start somewhere.
Fair enough. Bummer that it stopped you from watching the show at the time.
It was a big loss - Maria
Don't forget Rutger Hauer.
@@Madbandit77 Ahh well, I included the first two because they died relatively recently and were quite young but yes, RIP to Rutger Hauer, a truly marvelous actor who somehow decided he was going to be in...this.
@@TheBuffSummer Yes. well that's the main reason I'm still mad at it. Honestly, as bad as it is, I've seen worse.
Love you both and can't wait for this journey! Maria is the vampire slayer
It's corny. It's campy. It's silly and it's bad.
But it's a nice watch. I think it's worth seeing at least 1 time.
It’s definitely fun 😂 - Maria
Okay, now I’m seriously going to bed 👌🏻- Maria
I was right there with you until the final sentence...
@Shadowman4710 for as bad as it is, it could have been a lot less enjoyable, but I found the jokes funny, the actors entertaining and the visuals at least interesting.
Mental note: find pink bomber jacket for Sam
Can you find me a dark red one too? - Maria
@@TheBuffSummerI’ll look into it 😂
Honestly, my uber-crush on Luke Perry was the only thing that made this movie bearable for me.
I can totally understand that. Dylan from 90210 was one of my first crushes too. He's really helping here 😄 - Maria
So the "are you calling me a man" is because back then, he would have expected to just be called a "guy" or a name like "burnout" or some slang. Being called a man brings an air of respect in how she sees him though she was probably talking about the watcher. On the other end, he might also have just thought she was calling him old.
NM it's the first part which is why he decides to keep watch until the sun comes up for her.
This is the only way I will watch the Buffy movie lol. Thanks guys!
Fair enough 😂 hope you enjoy it with us! - Maria
If you actually wanted to give the comics a review, there are digital copies available, so you could screen share to your recording software as you talk about it possibly?
Seth Green was in this movie but they cut his scenes
That’s too bad😢 - Sam
This is a fun channel to watch. I liked and subscribed to it. Nice content. I remember watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with Sarah Michelle Geller while doing my homework. I also enjoy the other channel you have the "Movie Budz", I subscribed to that too👍
Thanks so much! We really appreciate that 😁🙏 - Sam
Anne Rice wanted Rutger Hauer to play Lestat (when he was younger).
Oh damn… how much younger lol. I’m glad they went with Tom cruise. He’s an odd guy, but he fit the role better I think - Sam
Pms Spidey sense ok
Hay guys the director of this movie is the same one that for the TV show later on for Buffy the vampire slayer, I grew up on both and somehow got different messages thew it all. Enjoy watching this and your other UA-cam channel on all movie is watching ( maybe if can still find it can you do the 80 s movie legend with Tim Curry and Tom Cruise)
The only thing I will and can say is,,, this IS a Action Comedy film.
Yes, and? - Maria
And P.S. This is NOT a Prequel to the Buffy series. (IMO)
@@donnilloyd1355 in my opinion too 😄 - Maria
@@TheBuffSummer The comment was for the viewers, not you two.
"Fun, but not in a good way" 😎
😎 - Maria
🖤
Benny was cute too lol.
Agreed 👌🏻😄 - Maria
@@TheBuffSummer Tis a shame he had little screen time and got killed off too quickly 😔
Yeah 🙃 - Maria
You’ve obviously have never seen THE HITCHER. Rutger H is beyond intimidating. He’s absolutely chilling.
In the show Angelous says that the school sign invites in anybody seeking knowledge. That’s why he can come in freely. I believe it’s in PASSION when he’s in the classroom with Jenny and the computer is burning.
Spoiler warning, please 🙏🏻
❤❤❤
Oh man, I forgot how bad Merrick’s death scene is. You’re meant to be sad but it was so badly done you cringe instead. I wish they’d gone with the original idea for it.
Is her friend who buys the yellow bomber jacket a young Hilary Swank?
Yep - Maria
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
The show is better
