    Great video. I've got the EF 85mm f1.4 (+EOS R6) and cannot be happier with the photos taken with it. RF 85mm f1.2 is a bit better but I still can't justify replacement of my EF 85 1.4 as I mainly use it taking photos of my two daughters. By the way your daughter has a great smile.

    My bias is towards the f1.4 is. Why, well portraits can be so sharp that people
    don't like seeing their wrinkles, veins and pores. Also the image stabilization holding
    at 1/2 looked great and therefore reducing ISO in low light is attractive to reduce noise and
    graininess . You said the AF speed on the two lenses is comparable, I don't shoot
    sports and since I also own a Sony A9 that can shoot electronic at 1/30000 sec.
    I would grab it for such subjects. Bokeh on both is very good and I only notice differences
    in bokeh in Christmas lights cats eye effect. Given the price difference I will pick the
    slower image stabilized lens

    Brilliant Review Shane! Your style in video is like your style in photos: Some glamour and shinyness, but a lot of substance and a certain no-nonsense approach. It's amazing how you can draw from use cases all over the spectrum in your professional work in such a review. Well done! This channel deserves more views.

    The sharpness while moving is absolutely incredible. Are you able to achieve something similar with the EF 85 1.4? This is much more in budget for me but I take a lot of animal photography and movement is a big factor in my photography, but I’m still looking for the gorgeous bokeh

    thanks for an open look at the RF85 to the EF85 . there is one point that people forget if you have a mixed lens set up EF and RF this gave me problems when changing lenses in the field going back and forth just to 2 lenses is ok as I just kept the adaptor on the EF , but going through 3 lens or more is a pain as I went from EF to RF and then EF but the adaptor was still on the other EF. was looking at getting some more adaptors as that would be the cheapest option, but thought Native would work better so saving up. first on the list RF28-70 F2 :) the RF85 F1.2 is on the list but just a little down it

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  4 роки тому

      You are spot on! I ran into the same problem. Having all EF lenses is great, or having all RF lenses, but having a mix can be really frustrating. I started with the EF but quickly moved over to the RF lenses as I got tired of the adapters as the quality is so much higher with the RF lenses. Great point!

    A lot of people like to talk about sharpness, but the 1.2 pics, through blind testing, consistently make me feel something I can’t with the 1.4 - and I’m nowhere near professional. The 1.2 just has that look for this genre of photography; ultimately, isn’t this art about what the pictures make you feel?

    so in conclusion, it's really not much different between the 2 lens, if you need to do post process on your image, these minor differences are basically nothing. Also, the image stablization is a big plus for the EF , the price different is huge consider how little different these 2 lesn are. Check the price between 16-35mm ef and 15-35mm rf, the price different is very small, and the perfromance is almost the same. So in conclusion the EF 85mm f1.4 is a lot better option since nobody is gonna to notice the minor different of background if you object looks good enough.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      Hello Leon! Yep they are similar! No client will probably ever notice. For me half the fun is the gear and looking at the images and noticing the minute details, and have a mix of adapted lenses and RF lenses when I am rapidly changing lenses on a wedding day got to be too cumbersome. So it was worth it for me, but it won't be for everyone! But yes the EF 16-35 and the EF 85 1.4 are incredible lenses for the price! All the best!

      I am sure it does great! I owned the Sigma 85 1.4 Art at one point, and it was a terrific lens. Having the IBIS of the R5 would be fantastic with that lens. I think the only con would be the size with the needed adapter. But for the price, that lens is amazing.

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 3 роки тому +1

      Just be aware that some features may be missing when using an EF lens and that many RF third party lenses are actually still just an EF lens with an RF mount. Not to forget other cons like updates requiring an extra adapter, and other things. There are more differences between first and third party lenses which people should be aware of but I guess most of them are already discussed in the relevant forums

    Hi Shane. I know it’s not really your area, but I photograph fast moving dog sports sometimes and do you think the older 85mm f 1.4L on the canon R6 with the eye detection would be the better choice for autofocus speed alone? Or do you think if I have the extra money, the RF lens autofocus would be better or similar? I am trying to save money. I used to use the older 85mm f 1.2 and I know both lenses are an upgrade to that, but I’m curious how the speed compares? Thanks!

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Gary! How fun to photograph fast moving dogs! Great question! Hmmm. Though I no longer have the EF 85 1.4, when I did have it the AF speed seemed quite similar, though at times it didn't feel quite at accurate when adapted as the RF 85 1.2 . And that isn't from a technical lab test, that was just my experience. I think with the extra contact points Canon just has these new lenses really focusing fast. But that also could have just been that the RF is a little bit sharper. The RF lenses are really fast focusing, but they also cost more... Not sure if that helps. Kind of also depends on how much you use the lens. Honestly, there are times where I wonder if I should just downgrade and get the RF 85 f/2 because I use the 50mm focal length in my work so much. All the best!

      @@ShaneLongPhotography thanks Shane! I don’t make a big living off of the dog sports, though I used to love my old 85mm f 1.2 EF lens. The look was out of this world, despite the terrible autofocus. I don’t think I can justify the cost at this time for the RF 85 1.2. Do you think that extra stop makes a huge background blur difference for the dogs? I guess it depends how clean my background is also. I’ll have to look at your video again to see. Thanks man

    • @ShaneLongPhotography

      I don't think the extra stop would make any difference when photographing the dogs. 1.4 makes plenty of background blur. I would try the EF 85 first and if you are disappointed, return it and save up!

For my style of individual portraits I almost like what the 135 f2 does better than the RF 85 1.2, it’s got some chromatic aberrations and not quite as sharp, but perhaps it’s the extra compression and the focal length being more to my liking. I love how good the 135 f2 is for the money so it’s hard to justify splashing out on the new one!
