An Australian film crew came to my house to interview me for a mini-series on yoga. It is to be broadcast worldwide in 2018. There will be 4 parts, each an hour long. With their permission, my camera team recorded my interview in parallel, so I can also use it for my own show. I got a chance to present my views fully on many questions the filmmaker asked. Some key topics:
    1. What is Yoga?
    2. History of Indian teachers bringing Yoga to the West.
    3. Why and how Western practitioners have appropriated Yoga, digested it and the ramifications of this.
    4. What is the future of Yoga & its deeper potentials for humanity?
    5. Who will control Yoga in the future?
    6. Lessons the Indian Yoga teachers must learn from their past mistakes in compromising authenticity when they exported Yoga.
    7. The 2nd revolution of Yoga that is coming soon.
    8. When Yoga remains authentic to its Vedic foundation, how it serves as a poison pill that Abrahamic religions find difficult to digest.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn from this video that India was one of the wealthiest countries in the world till 1700s. How did we end up losing so much in a matter of 200 years that not just India, but also Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka has been reduced to abject poverty! What a shame that we don't know our own history!

Google User According to Cambridge study of economic prosperity India and China made up 65% of world GDP in 11th Century. With Islamic invasion Indian GDP fell quite a bit. Inspite of that we were still somewhat wealthy in 1750. But lost that with the British invasion.

We lost so much in the last few decades because Hindus are not standing up and protecting the religion and Hindu practices, which have been misappropriated and divorced from its Hindu origins.

A number of important points being explained here. "The Keepers of the Tree should not ultimately sell out the tree". This needs to be seriously looked into. The nature of producing modern children often erodes "Origin Trees" in the Human context - we can see this in the context of Judaism which is the Source Religion for Christianity and Islam. Traditional Vedic and Classical Hinduism is multi-faceted. We see Yoga as a part of that Grand KalpaVriksha. I hope there is enough support in the coming of the Yogic Tradition to also build on the "Keepers of the Tree". In the Garden of Eden, on the Eastern Side, there is the Tree of Knowledge which is guarded by two Cherubims. So too, in NandanaVana, there is the Kalpavriksha or Wishing Tree, that produces fruit enjoyed by the Great Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. This is the "Original Tree". This is the Tree of Life that we see digested into the Movies like Avatar. This is the Tree that brings Children to Goddess Parvati. The parts are easily digested but explaining the Whole by the Knowers to the Yoga Instructors is important. They need to understand that Grand Whole , also in the context of the people who are learning Yoga. Then they need to explain this Grand Whole.
A final Point, Kalpavriksha is protected by a KInnara and a Kinnari as is the Tree of Knowledge which is protected by Two Cherubims. Teaching the Whole Truth is important. Let me start with the watchers of this Video.

This is a very interesting interview. The second half here is particularly interesting because it is showing what the potential in Bhāratavarṣa (India) may come to be. I watched the interview on the Holy Yoga founder the other day, and I could see something in her that is not in many of the authentic yoga teachers who don't have an ego. Ego plays a factor in what I sense in a person's body language, but there is also the extreme militarization of the personality insofar as how guarded they seem, how they carry themselves, the confidence they try to exude to people, when in fact, they are confused, not sure of themselves, perhaps scared for their future because they may not realize where this is taking them (the poison pill effect from playing with something they don't really know anything about). In essence, they're on the defense against the chaos of the sort brought about by Westernism, because as a civilization, they stumble about from one thing to another with no understanding of where they're heading. Look at unintended consequences like environmental damage, harm caused by things like plane crashes (wind shear, lack of understanding of how windows buckle or shatter under certain atmospheric conditions while in flight, wing-icing effects, not maintaining critical parts responsible for craft operation integrity, etc.), ships sinking (Titanic because of metallurgical behaviors dependent on temperature), medical mistakes, and numerous other mistakes arising from ignorance out of a lack of a connection to superconsciousness.
The second part of the video is why I see that eventually, I want to move to Bhāratavarṣa, because it is indeed a country on the rise, especially if they get the colonization out of its collective mindset and re-examime the power behind yoga as a component (but not the only one) of Sanātana Dharma (Hinduism), and then bring back in everything else into its proper place (the various texts on things like karma yoga, jñāna yoga, bhakti yoga, the different schools of Hindu philosophy, gurukulas, and so on).
Also, I see the people doing u-turns because they want to have it both ways, as Rajivji mentioned, the yoga and the Nicene Creed, which are really mutually in conflict with each other. They can't have it both ways, really. To embrace yoga fully in its intended form, as it practiced by the people who have used it the longest, have studied it the most, have had the most experience with it, you must examine it fully, to understand its place within Sanātana Dharma, and it you accept all of this, it necessitates a break from the Abrahamic worldview. It is unequivocally necessary to make that break so as to understand fully the purpose of yoga.

Making a strong Hindu - Yoga connection would be more effective in explaining why this war on Yoga is taking place. Yoga means Yuj atman Brahman cha; which literally translates to Yoke or unite the soul with Brahman (Hindu deity) through the various aspects ofYoga : Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Japa, Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and others.
Divorcing any part/aspect of Yoga from Hinduism for one's gain is simply NOT Yoga, but misappropriated and therefore PHONY.

I would appreciate if there was awareness in people to call it Sanatan Sanskriti or Vedic Dharma. Sanatan Sanskriti is repository of knowledge with human evolution. This evolved with the time and yug (kaal).
1.Since Dharma evolved and led humans from darkness to light from ignorance to knowledge. "tamso ma jyotirgamaya". There was no other religion to compete So there is no name, no rules for bashing other religion and concept of conversion. You can't bash criticize or compete non existent.
    2. This is why got more than 1400 books scriptures on various topics helpful in material and spiritual life and this knowledge evolved with time.
    3. Ayurvda, Medicine, Vyakrna, Natyashashtra, state crafts, yagya hawan ritual, philosophy, astrology, Jyotish, poetics, sangita shastra, yoga, Veda,Vedanta, Puran, Mimansa architecture mathematics to name a few. Books are available on every aspect of human brain can imagine in such a detail that only one book Mahabharat contains one lakh shlokas.
    4. In short Dharma is celebration of the diversity of Human knowledge.
    5. We as a layman only know about Dharma as a blind man knows about elephant after holding the tail of the elephant.
    5. Most of us are only able to know what we see on daily basis like nature and creation worship. And on the basis of this we criticize and appreciate dharma. But Dharma criticize none. Dharma don't give scope for criticism but enlightenment.
    6. There is so much more to know. Since I am born in a Dharma followers family. Therefore I celebrate the diversity of human thoughts with ease. Dose not mean i know everything. But once you will know Dharma out of the set set criteria of Abrahamic religion for Dharma. You will find nothing to criticize like a blind man holding an elephant tail and saying why he is made to hold a snake.
    8. For example when you see a survivor on discovery eating dead animal poo and pee either you appreciate or criticize this. But no one can deny that this human will survive the odd. And Dharma have a complete set of philosophy and practicing sect called aghori. However a little. To make sure that the human will survive the extreme. Human will not die out because of the certain dogmas made by the so called civilized society or religion.
    9. Religion ends at heaven and hell only but the Dharma gives to strive even beyond this. That's Moksha complete liberation.
    10. Comparing Dharma with one book one prophet religion is not a good idea. Can only increase ignorance. Because books of mazhab are small simple and for that for the followers of that particular mazhab only. So better study the world's oldest surviving civilization based on Dharma with universal application, yourself. सर्वे जना:सुखिनो भवन्तु. सर्वे सन्तु निराम्या:

Yoga can never be separated from Hinduism because it's our lifestyle. If other people want to practice exercises, that's perfectly fine. The exercises alone can't help them attain liberation. There's some people on UA-cam who have Ashtanga Yoga certification, which I think is wrong. Ashtanga Yoga should never be commercialized. Most of them are probably not even enlightened but they're selling gimmicks and bullshitting people. Then some people would complain that Raja Yoga doesn't work, because they weren't practicing it correctly.

Great talk, cant comment much on the content. However, I am less optimistic than Rajiv on the future (though I hope I am wrong) due to skepticism on the integrity the new keepers of the tree, the slavish western consumerism of the Indian middle class, and the relentless campaign by the powerful commie/NGO/media/evangelical/Islamic Breaking India forces to digest/deconstruct the dharmic traditions within India itself.
BTW, if there were ever to be a Yoga group in the US capitol, it will most likely be the 'Christian' version rather than the authentic vedic one (case in point, the (in)famous 'alternate nostril breathing' comment by Hilary to cope with her loss).

YOGA IS A WAY OF LIFE - Wow! glad and delighted to hear an Australian journalist couple are interested to produce, direct and make a four hour documentary series on YOGA, consisting of an hour each. Bit unclear on for who the financiers, handlers and core agenda of the film. My suggestion is to have Rajiv Malhotra be involved in the making of this film so as to project the film in an authentic and 'As it is' manner and not in any way misleading and for sensationalizing purposes. My only worry is YOGA as depicted in the serial could be portrayed in a distorted and negative manner. While I believe the world wide YOGA community needs to take more proactive action to ensure any types of misrepresentations are NOT put forth in the FIRST PLACE. The recent Cnn's distorted story on Aghori is very fresh in the people's mind. Thanks!

It says in scriptures that "Only those who have gained freedom from what they see and hear has access to Yoga" This is Lesson 1 "Yoga Chttha Vritthi Nirodha" There are eight stairs for self realisation. Yoga Yaama, Yoga Niyaama, Yoga Aasana, Yoga Pranaayama, Yoga Prathyahara, Yoga Dhaarana, Yoga Dhyaana, Yoga Samaadhi. Then therefore the YOGI leaves the body and unites with 'Paramaatma'. It also says that there is only one in million who is a Yogi. The Yoga today is all about Asanas which can lead to healthy life and longevity. The Vedic aspect of YOGA is simply about 'Jivaatma' individual (subject) uniting with 'Paramaatma' (object) or in modern words the oneness of Microcosm with Macrocosm. So simple in theory but mission impossible in practicality. Keep smiling!

Wonderful. But Rajiveji please liaise with PM Modi not to skip any authentic practices yoga just to please Muslims like skipping surya namaskar or chanting ohm and include yoga in the school curriculum.
Sad thing is not many people are actually doing Yoga in India itself including the religious leaders like Swamijis.

I would love to know where exactly the criticism of Christian Yoga and all these non-authentic type of Yoga written, do you have blogs or it's written in one of your books? If so, could someone link me to this particular blog or which one of the Rajiv's book specifically talks about this?
I'd be a very powerful tool for me to debate and write articles/blogs citing your information.

The main issue is the 'certification' of the Yoga Teachers outside India. These Yoga training and certifications centres are run by Westerners who run it as a business rather than as a non-for-profit organisation, and are willing to bend the rules in Yoga to suit the local population. All Yoga certification centres should be not-for-profit in any part of the world. The best way is for a centre like Bihar School of Yoga, Munger to start a movement to open Yoga certification centres all over the world; which will make the existing 'for profit' centres redundant.

Without any doubt Mr Rajiv Malhotra is a modern Sankaracharya who fight in intellectual Kurukhetra without compromising the principles of Sanatan Dharma no matter whoever may be to get wealth & recolonization. The yoga practiced by West or modern people are "Aasana" which is basically just one organ of the "Astanga Yoga" i.e. 1.Yama, 2.Niyama, 3.Swadhyaya, 4. Aasana, 5. Pranayam, 6. Dhyana, 7.Dharana and 8.Samadhi. These superficial naive practisioner can never reach to that state unless left ego and do rigorous practice for life long.

Let your ego be devoured by yoga, and when you do that, that is athletic yoga. That is the yoga that lord Siva prescribed, That is the yoga that will bring peace to the World, of human intolerance and unrest.

I like Rajiv's comment : "tolerance is an insult" Once this oft-used word loses value due to spread of authentic yoga, acceptance will replace tolerance and consequently intolerance debate will vanish.

In my middle school Yoga was mandatory and the teacher used to explain the purpose of Yoga the way Rajiv Malhotra explained but at that young age, I could not understand "connecting with higher self" concept so I never continued that. Many decades later I re-learned yoga and have been doing this everyday for many years now and will never stop!

    What is yoga?
    "Yogas chitta-vritti-nirodha"
"Yoga is restraining the mind-stuff from taking various forms" -- Swami Vivekananda
Everything else is either a means to this end or a side effect.
