I adore classic style. Maybe because I always went to private school and wore blazers as part of our uniform. I don’t feel dressed without one. Give me a lovely pair of tailored trousers, a mock turtleneck, a blazer, and a lovely structured handbag. If it’s in camel and black or navy and white, I’m in heaven. Top it with a double strand of pearls and pearl studs, preferably handed down in the family. Perfection.
Old money is not the Ralph Lauren look. That is a fantasy of what old money SHOULD look like. (Grace Kelly was money, but not old, BTW). Old money does not care about clothes and fashion. Good quality, for sure, but pretty frumpy and shabby based on my experience and research.
"Frumpy and shabby" is typical in New England old families. They are secure in who they are and do not need to impress anyone. Often what appears shabby is of high "quality" and is a look that cannot be easily duplicated. This shabby appearance is common in the UK with the aristocracy as well, and often they will have high-quality jackets that are patched up on the elbows but love to wear when out in 'the Country' estates. The marketing of a fake 'wealthy class' to the masses and celebrities, and therefore hopeful to attain nouveau riche status drives this understanding you have about 'frumpy and shabby' as the usual with the old families. However, when you see them in 'shabby' you are allowed to glimpse them at play (in town, beaches, etc). They dress quite elegantly when it counts, at the balls and formal dinner parties. They are generally called "the hidden class" for a reason. We are doing well if you believe us "shabby" in dress; you have missed our subtle cues that only people of our group would easily identify. We won't be worried about kidnapping, I dare say as we are do not appear as wealthy. As close knit 'clans', we associate with each other through generations whether some retain their previous generation's wealth status or not.
I am italian and grew up being told what was in good taste. Ralph Lauren is NOT "Old Money"-- it's expensive, ready-made clothing. Lauren is brilliant at having collected objects that are his vision of old money-- and that's great. If you love his wares, buy them. In my experience, one finds a tailor-- and you buy cloth and s/he makes the jacket for you. This doesn't mean haute couture. In Italy we have many tailors and seamstresses who work on their own. The important thing is to have the piece made for you. It will cost less that a Ralph Lauren. You will not be paying for his stores.
I had class mates that came from families " with old money " they never flaunted their wealth or status, at various events they would dress " refined and appropriate to the event" what the class clown liked to refer to them as " quiet and conservatively boring " whereas she was LOUD, CRASS and at times extremely offensive Classic is also TIMELESS .....
Òld money does not mean boring neautrals. Jackie kennedy , grace kelly , a young princess di wore lot of bright reds and pinks. And they all screamed old money❤
(14:00) Pretty great way to sum up the difference: Old Money: classic and tailored vs Quiet Luxury: minimalist, understated looks. Both styles are made with high quality fabrics in neutral colors.
I don't see any difference between elegant, classic attire and elegant old money. Does it really matter? Both are elegant and do not show off. Both are quite luxury. Isn't it confusing?
Style is not geared to old or new money, there are different generations who choose to dress how they want. It’s more flashy and luxury items noawadays,
None of my 'old family' relations will wear Ralph Lauren or even Brooks Brothers (the latter has been a UK brand for a few decades now and for sometime they were placing the little Sheep on all the clothing). The Brits ruined Brooks Brothers for most of us with the garish logo (which should have stayed on an unseen interior label). We also do not like waste, so many of us will never spend thousands of dollars on a handbag. Quality we love but once clothing, bags and shoes become a massive marketing campaign directed toward the nouveau riche and in debt, upwardly mobile middle classes we move on to other brands to signal to each other. By the time everyone figures out that we are not wearing the brands they thought we were wearing, we had been relying more on our bespoke favorites for sometime instead. In Europe, many of the old families will wear the fashions of high-quality, Italian and French designers but they also will quickly turn away from those same designers if they start to market to the masses, and either cheapen the look and price, and conversely if they make their prices ridiculously expensive. We'll feel taken advantage of and perceive that the designers are showing ungratefulness for our earlier sponsorship that allowed them to become wealthy. Also, many of us wear the same hair style we had when we left college - now that will surprise people, I am sure!
No… Not H&M or Zara! They are fast fashion that ends up in landfills. Why not recommend a medium price like J.Crew or Banana Republic? You don’t have to spend to get Laura Piana or Tiffany. There are medium priced options that are not fast fashion.
I don't believe fast fashion can ever pass as a quality piece of clothing. They are cheap and watching the environment. A better option is to buy second hand/consignment shop -- or go on a treasure hunt at thrift stores that are near the best, old neighborhoods, church thrift shop -- with a well heeled congregation, or other WASPy enclave. Lol. Actually, I'm quite serious

Wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful
Be confident in your beauty. You are unique and special in your own way.🥰

Yes. This is very true. 😊
Totally agree. It's boring and devoid of any creativity

You must be talking about his Purple couture label
@@francescaemc2 Thank you for sharing from your experience. 😁
@@avondalemama470 my pleasure.
As I’ve gotten older ( 67 ) my taste in clothes has changed. Definitely looking at more neutral colors. Thanks
I love both will try to incorporate both into my style but I'm more on the classic spectrum of style
Awesome video. Simple luxury! 👍🏻👍🏻

Love this!
You are NOT getting quality fabric from H&M or Zara.
Quality has a price. And Zara is certainly NOT an « alternative » to Dior !!!
Thanks for watching 💛
Do not forget Max Mara, especially the iconic 101801 coat
timeless pieces
Thanks.

Both is same just what’s different? Thank you

I think both have amazing pieces. But for sure old money
Plus you will have an original garment that no one else has.

I enjoy looking at quirky artistic brave people with a rock & roll spirit 🖕

Sponsored by Ralph Lauren. 😅
Quiet Luxury
Ralph Lauren clothing is such bad quality, price doesn't guarantee quality unfortunately.
This is not a history class. Talk FASHION
