I prefer the second method as it stabilizes the edge more and is more structured to keep ribbing non flared at edge. However the method of working into waste yarn with half the number of stitches cast on and using the knit one, and the yarn over method is my favourite, as the waste yarn really holds the edge firm and structured until it is removed, the result is my favourite. Thank you for sharing, and all you do.

I always start with a twist, not a knot, but will use this cast on for a smooth, stretchy edge...thanks.
Me too. I like to start with a twist because it is not as stiff as a knot. That's what I did at 1:15 in this video.
Hi! Thanks for the great video. I'm struggling so much trying to figure out how to make this cast on work for an odd number. I have to cast on 99 stitches in this style and I'm losing my tiny mind! thanks!
HI Julia. It probably happens because the last "odd" stitch slips off the needle when you turn the work. It's easier to cast on one extra stitch (100 in your case) and then knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the first row. Happy knitting :-)

For a broken rib bottom hem (using cotton ) would you recommend the first option or the second?
Hi Marcie. It depends on the kind of edge you want to create (and the level of your patience, of course :-) The first way is faster but it forms a thinner, flimsier edge. The second way forms a sturdy rounded edge but it takes a little bit longer to make. If you are in no particular hurry, it is worth spending some extra time to use the second way. Good luck :-)
@@10rowsaday Maryna, I did try both and for this pattern with the split hem, the first way looked better and “softer”. For my next sweater I will go with the 2nd way. Thank you again for your quick reply.
Hello, Miss Maryna, please correct me if I am mistaken in my understanding of your instructions. These 2 styles are just for set-up rows, right? After set-up row is done, we knit the regular way and not thru back loop anymore, right? Or we continue knitting via back loop all thru out? Thank you for the tutorial :)

I'm a bit puzzled - some other videos about tubular cast on use a provisional cast on row to start. What's the difference?

Does this work for 2x2 or other combinations of ribbing?
This cast on only works with 1x1 rib. Making two or more knit or purl stitches in a row will make them unravel . There are different techniques for working a tubular cast on that do work for other rib patterns.
You are right - this cast on works best for 1x1 rib, but you can easily adjust it for 2x2 rib by changing the placement of stitches in the first pattern row. Let me know if you'd like to see how to do it, and I'll make a tutorial about it. Thank you :-)

how do join italian cast on for a hat?
It is better to join stitches for working in the round AFTER you finish the cast on. There will be a little gap at the beginning of the round, but this gap is easy to fix when you weave in the yarn tails. Simply make a few overhand stitches with the cast on tail when you weave it in. Good luck :-)
