You both are adorbs! Derek’s accent is getting progressively thicker (no shade; it’s super fun to hear). Great content as usual. Mililani seems like a good choice for younger families. Hawaii is always going to be safer than big cities on the mainland - plus it’s always warmer, cleaner and more friendly. When we win the lottery I’ll be calling! 🏡🌺🌴

I love Mililani, but it's just not the same. Unfortunately, too many foreigners moved in, and it feels like another Kailua or Hawaii Kai. Too much land and homes are being sold to these foreigners, and this is why our kamaaina either being priced out of Hawaii or end up homeless on the street. Such a shame that Hawaii is for sale to outsiders, not to mention crime is now up. What would our Queen say if she were here to see Hawaii her land being sold off to foreigners...and some of them bring their crime here?

I'm from the south side of Chicago, grew up in a heavily Mexican neighborhood, and I feel you and I understand.
I'm seeing my old neighborhood be gentrified to hell. The building I grew up in is now a potbelly's.
And it sucks that real estate agents and speculators are pricing people out that lived there their entire lives.
But some people want to move to Hawaii because of it's cultural history, because of what it offers.
Hell, I want to move to Hawaii because of the stricter gun laws, be close to a VA hospital, and access to abortion. There's not a lot of places we can go. As long as people can respect the culture, respect the people that live there and lived before us, why not. We don't need a blood quantum to say "we belong"
That being said, a lot of people just see houses as investments and not homes. And that sucks and I hope they can do something about it.

Your words touched my heart! It is greatly sad, when strangers move in, take hold of neighborhoods, and ruin it. Seems no one takes care of things as the actual owners. It is heartbreaking 💔
I lived in New York City (Upper Manhattan) for many years, it was a great place, but little by little it changed for the worst 😢

First time I've caught your channel and every video I've watched have been great!! Love the easy friend conversation style you both offer your opinions and the in depth knowledge you have of each area!!! One thing that you don't talk about much are the schools and school rankings in each area. Would love to hear your thoughts about the areas educational system and if the "real school vibe" from a local person's POV is different from the school's "Great Schools Rating" score. Thank you and look forward to watching more of your videos!!!

Everywhere in Hawaii is not what it used to be(more crime everywhere), you need to do your own homework before you buy. The realtor will usually only give you the basics of the area. I used to live at Launani Valley in a townhouse & loved it. Too bad I had to sell it. If I could, I wish I could live in Mililani Mauka(but not fond of all the association rules though). Keep up the good work with the videos!

@@movingtohawaii- Launani Valley was great because I worked in Mililani(no traffic), it had cool temps, super quiet neighborhood, you got to know your neighbors(mine were great), you could go for walks or a bike ride in the early evenings without fear of getting mugged(like it is now in town where I live). Probably the only downside I remember there were the mosquitos, cane spiders, it rained a lot(1 of my cars had to be parked in the rain), if you needed to go to the store or to a doctor appointment you had to drive there. For me, the positives out weighed the negatives. Like I said before, everyone needs to do their own homework before they buy, because what's good for me might not be good for you.

You are next to Mililani Golf course. I grew up on that golfcourse filled with Eucalyptus trees. As for the crime its all a spillover from the Marxist prosecutors who are soft on crime all across the US and sadly Hawaii. Straight from a HPD officer WHO’s hands are tied because they let the criminals go as fast as they are brought in.

I do not ever think that a town is immune to violence and crime, especially in our modern society where everyone is connected to so much outside stuff. I like to know about the "negative" stuff as people call it, to be aware. It is interesting how people select when they get or pretend to be outraged about a murder and what they ignore all the time.
Anyway, 40+ years ago, I saw Mililani as the southern California suburb-like part of Oahu. It was something like the "E.T." neighborhood. It was just Mililani Town at that time. I don't get that craving for "exciting" and "trendy" right outside your house when it is about thirty minutes away.
I never understand why people just build carports instead of full enclosed garages. You don't have to really worry about your car and can put tools in it. I had that problem with a house. The man built it without a garage but a little carport. He later added a big den to the back, still no garage.

The ENTIRE Sovereign Country of Hawaii is not the same and never has been since the overthrow of the Hawaiian Government, I believe, in 1893. I do not understand why locals are so surprised of the constant change of the 7 Islands (excluding Niihau, Niihau never changes. Mmmmm I wonder why?).

@@movingtohawaii ….As a local, 3rd generation born in Hawaii since 1898, born and raised in Hawaii, I was educated by many Kapuna over the years that have “experienced” Niihau. I do not have enough Hawaiian Blood to physically go to Niihau unless I am invited under special circumstances. My experience has been 64 years of education from the Kapuna who have lived there and continue to have family that live there. There is no better education or “experience” then the Kapuna sharing their wisdom and experience. The only change on Niihau in the last 20 years or so is Solar Energy. I do not know how much you know about Niihau, if you have ever lived there or if you have family there, but there has not been any drastic colonialism changing the Hawaiian culture, their standard of living or it’s people. a lot of people in north florida and other parts of the south don't have garage because its expensive to have fans or AC in them and without they get waaaay too hot. Kids and pets have died in non climate control. especially with cheaper and older properties we have car ports. Even "nicer" places will often have car ports because you can hang out in the shade under them. often carport on the rear and pool next to it.

Timestamp 8:00 : I get what you mean, Derek. There was a time in my life when I lived in Flatbush, NY (used to be one of the jankiest places in Brooklyn) and then Triangle Junction moved in with Target as an anchor, peppered with a number of nice brand stores. Not to say that there isn't any crime there (there still is), but there's something about having a Target there when it comes to having a nicer anchor in an otherwise formerly questionable area. (They skipped having a Walmart altogether.)

I grew up in the pineapple camp of Waipio near
Kipapa elementary school long long before mililani was built. There were about 35 houses where the plantation workers families lived. It was an awesome place to grow up. There were pineapple fields around that area. We used to walk barefoot in the pineapple fields to go exploring as kids and we had nothing to be afraid of. there was a ditch that ran past kipapa elementary from far away. We used to go exploring along the ditch which a lot of guava trees, passion fruit vines, and a mango tree. We built a dam and swam in the ditch. We used to hike to kipapa gulch a few miles away to go swimming and just to look around.there was a baseball field close to our house and a basketball court. There was a field about the size of a football field across our house. That was an awesome place to grow up and live. I wish I could go back to when it was just a camp surrounded by pineapple fields with all the old families living there.

It’s not really the people who bought homes or own homes in the community but it is often times their children who got into drugs and criminal behavior and are now just stuck in Mililani hanging out everyday partying and doing stupid stuff because they’re bored.
