Modern art is just pretentious people trying to pretend they have an enlightened taste. You know for god damned sure he couldn't tell you what techniques were used by (somewhat "modern" artist, who was actually an artist in more than self-proclaimed title) Dicksee, or what made Rodin (another "modern" artist) stand out amongst his peers, and what made his statues so moving. For all his waffling on about meaning, he wouldn't be able to explain what the Belle Heaulmière represents or why, without needing a wiki article to explain it to him. But he'll tell you about how a rock is better than the Statue of David because it is slightly less transient, as if the longevity of a subject determines its artistic quality. That itself explains his ineptitude, that he would even consider that a measurement. But then, what can be expected from the smooth brain who thinks an appliance is art because it has a back story, as if every other base object doesn't have a backstory as well.
it's also not all modern art. modern art ended in the 70's.
