Introduction to my Merc 280 SE from 1980, one of the last W116 series to be produced. It has ABS brakes, af first for the S-class in 1978, "tempomat" cruise control, 4-speed automatic, electric sunroof, heated front seats, nice wood-trim, and adjustable headlights from inside the cabin. It needs some work, indcluding at new paintjob, and this will be done soon. The goal is a fully restored car - "good as new" :-)

I inherited one of these to drive when I was a young teen. It was very comfortable - the engine always started right up no even if it was -30c with no block heater ! They also had a first aid kit ... the engine had 170hp. The gas tank was large. People complimented it even tho it was an older vehicle by the time I got it. I'd take one of these any day for the reliability and comfort.
Yes, they were built differently in the 70's and 80's. Real engineering focus. I mostly drive a w126 300SE from 1989 now - still great quality, but a little more modern with working AC, which is nice 🙂
@@Oedegaarde I did put an Alpine stereo in it.. it was a 78 German import so it had flush headlights . The engine sounded amazing in cold weather ! There was a sense it was bullet proof. I drove it in Canada.

What a beautiful machine! Can’t believe how much engineering went into these cars. This is what can be achieved without computers and by locking the accountants in the closet. In terms of your car it definitely has power or servo assisted brakes. As stated elsewhere in the comments you can find the servo which looks like a black disc attached to the bulkhead behind the brake fluid reservoir and master cylinder.
Also may I make a suggestion? If money is an issue, you might want to get the bonnet and trunk lid wet sanded as it’s only the clear coat/lacquer that’s cracked. You might want to try re-lacquering the car or depending on the results you could use a semi permanent coating. This will allow you to address the rust spots on the car.
Also as these cars rust from the ground up, you really want to get a look at the underneath especially the sills and wheel arches before you embark on a respray for this large beast. Imagine doing all that work respraying only to find the car will keep on rusting.

Nice car, needs a little body and paint job though. Three things I noticed, that made me think you might run into issues with car technology if your knowledge hasn't improved since 2014:D 1) a genuine Mercedes guy knows that these old injections (in your car K-jetronic, in w116 since 1975) need the pre-running of the fuel pump in order to pressurize the system, some 2 seconds, buzzing sound from the rear. That's why the ignition lock need almost 180 degrees turn to reach (II), so that the driver needs to take a second grip to actually start (III) the engine - an old poka-yoke!. 2) You don't think your Merc has power brakes aka vacuum assisted brake servo? Well, I bet it does have that vacuum servo, it has even ABS, most cars globally had brake servo since 50s, and definitely Mercedes; the brake servo is the cylinder like soup plate sized sheet metal can behing the brake main cylinder. 3) Considering the low km's, your oil pressure seems extremely low, should get to '3' right above idle rpm. Either your engine has been driven much more or sth wrong there, or you are using 0W40 modern oil, which doesn't fit your engine at all.

Beautiful car! I grew up driving one of these beauties. Try to replace the huge clock gauge with a tachometer with a built in clock...I also see you have no A/C so you might wanna get that too. Enjoy!!

Thanks! I guess they are called mud flaps, but they were already on the car when I bought it, so I don't know where you can find them. Sorry!

Hello! Well, it's on the back-burner, as I have started a second company, so there is just not enought time. The car is pretty much the same, except that I now have a new hood, doors and trunklid for the car, all prepped and primed for pain. They are not on the car, so I will switch them all out, but I don't expect anything to happen with that until summer at the earlies.

Welcome :-) I don't really know the consumption, but I would guess about 10-12 km/liter with normal driving. Not super frugal.

When i was young. This was my Dream car! . I preferit in brown. Very very very nice car. And then in 2002 i bought mercedes 290 td automatic full options. Very very good.

Nej, verkligen inte! S-klassen är i det hela taget ovanlig med manuell låda, men 280S finns det en del, men med större motorer är det mycket ovanligt. Har du en sådan?

Not yet - it's "tucked in" for the winter. I hope there is time to get it resprayed during winter/early spring :-)

I own a early model of W124 since 2010. My purpose was to familiarise the design and once I know what I am doing, I will then move onto other rarer models. maybe now is the time, suggestions? - w116 or w108? ;-)
海平王 Well, the W116 is not exactly rare yet, but good examples are getting harder to find. It's probably at good time to buy now, before prices start to climb :-)
