I deeply appreciate the break down of beginner's Algebra. Unfortunately, I was always one of those who found this subject really difficult to understand...??? Right now, I'm learning it at age 51+. As they say, it's never too late to learn, I guess.
Yes sir, it's never too late, i didn't have good education, i am 30, and i am a programmer as i advanced in my programming i found out that i need to go to the VERY BASICS in order to understand the level of complexity i reached, and this guy is a brilliant teacher so you are in good hands, good luck :)
Same here my teacher would just give us pamphlets to take home for our parents to teach us and my mother worked 2nd shift so i never got to learn. Its a wonder why the us education system is ranked 30some in the world.

I live in Sydney Australia. I wasn’t taught algebra because I was in a special ed unit from year 3 to year 12. Instead we were taught basic maths (subtractions, additions, multiplication and long division) I want to learn algebra because I had always admired someone as brilliant as Stephon Hawkings. I would like to learn this as not as a requirement but instead just finding something new and fascinating to understand.

Thanks so much for this lesson. School always went too fast and I got left behind with this. Trying to better myself at 34 so learning the basics. Cheers :)
I just found your videos today, and you are a veritable godsend. For years I have been saying almost verbatim what you said: People -including teachers- go through the the motions and memorize tricks, but when challenged on the grounds of logic and asked "why," the results are as such, they have have no answer but, "Because that's how it works." I have spent years knowing that the only way I'd figure out algebra and other maths is if a logical conclusion were presented, and you, sir, have done a fine job of that.
My god... I love this video, you might actually save my life here. I'm going to continue watching as many videos in Algebra as I can.. I am taking Introduction of Algebra in Ashford University but I have Never once in my life learned or taken Algebra (not in middle school, not in high school as I wasn't allowed to), so the first assignment of class is to automatically be fluent in expressions and meaning of the "number formats" as I'll call them... which I have no idea what I'm doing. My school doesn't offer any videos and it's all online so they just give me a book with materials and I can't learn math from reading about it in a book where the first chapter is 84 pages alone.. Especially trying to focus when I'm absolutely lost in my reading, this so far has helped me greatly. If you have any other specific things you might know that can help me, anything will help... Even if that being something more simple than this or more advanced.
So far, this is the best video on algebra I have seen. Most of the "for beginners" they still use words that I haven't learnt yet, and don't really explain what the things mean. You really broke it down.
Dear Maths520, many thanks for this video as it is a long time since I did algebra at school. I know I used to like it a lot but I have forgotten most of it so it is great to listen to your videos and learn from the beginning again. I hope to learn more maths from you as well. The other type of maths I did at school was binary so it would be great if you could do a tutorial on this from its beginning please.
Love how simplistic this was as far as just refreshing the idea of a small part of algebra. I've never been a fan of math and am an English lover but being that I didn't take my SAT in high school last year, I'll be taking it in about 3 months time and want to learn as much as I can math-wise now before that test.
I'm like 15 and know nothing in school I'm supposed to I sick at everything and if I was in a real school I would have failed everything. I actually understood what this guy is saying when no one else has been able to explain it to me in a way I understand so thank you for the help I will be watching a lot more of theses vids
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I dropped out of H.S. 32 years ago and yesterday attended orientation for obtaining my GED. Today I took a test for placement within the GED program, an aptitude test if you will. Needless to say, I remember nothing of Algebra and was reminded of this as I stood there with a blank mind trying to use logic in choosing the correct answer. That doesn't work well in Math, particularly Algebra. So, I came home and decided to 'teach' myself something today and came across your video. I love it. I will watch the others as well. I don't know how I scored on my test until Monday, I just wish I'd searched for these videos yesterday. Anyhow, I am determined to learn the basics, again, thank you!
I would suggest that you consider algebra as an independent skills set from mathematics. Mathematics then uses algebra and a set of rules that have been derived from logic. The problem with Mathematics in school is that it tries to cover too much ground and not build core mathematics skills. There simply is no point doing calculus or functions if you do not have a good algebra foundation. Even if you go half way through your mathematic journey there is no harm in going back to the very start with algebra.
I am in college and am just now taking Algebra because I avoided it in high school. THANK YOU for explaining it so well. I am in an accelerated program which means, I have five weeks (now 3) to learn all there is about Algebra. I am an extremely hard person to teach math to, I never remember anything after five minutes but not with this video. I'll be watching every single one you have. You're saving me!!
A tremendous way of teaching Sir. It helped me clear my doubts about algebra quite effectively. Thank you so much for a such a wonderful teaching technique. I am thankful to everyone associated with the organisation.
Awesome!!! I have been looking for in introduction to algebra for my 8 year old and this is the one. I hope the person that put this video together is teaching in schools because they can truly use his skills. Thank you very much.
I will be watching this repeatedly until I understand fully. I am returning to college at age 32 and dropped high school. Thanks so much for these video's..
I just feel like im trying to read alien hierarchicas what moron decided to combine the alphabet into mathematics. No mater what i just do not understand what im looking at. Its just frustrating and makes me feel stupid about myself.
The letter in algebra is a symbol just as the number is. They both represent something. The a maybe an unknown. For example you may want to know how many tins of paint needed for a wall and you could use the letter C to represent it. So you may be asked to solve for C.
I agree completely. They put me in special ed for spelling, which I ended up becoming really good at but they kept me in there and I just learned the same elementary level bullshit until I reached high school and had no idea what was going on. I'm in adult education now and I still don't understand this stuff.
Lol I was holiday in America and when I came back my maths teacher gave me heaps of work on Algebra with me having no knowledge about it. Thats my story to why I'm watching this xD
Thank You. I love Math and my 4th grade math is FAR to easy and though I know this already this is a start. It is very kind to take time from your day to help students. And you explain how you get numbers unlike many other teaches (assuming you are one) one again thank you and you are very kind.
Really I am very much thankful to you Sir. Because Now I am 50 year old, when I studied in 10th class 1982 that time, GENERAL MATHS AND COMPOSITE MATHS I have lot of fear for composite maths, because algebra is very big problem I am not able to understand, that is why I have taken General Maths, Now I tried to see in net Basics of Algebra, introduction is very interesting and I understand, If I keep my brain it is very easy. have to understand logics, ....Thanks.
Basic idea of algebra, but very essential ones. Learnt a lot from this video. Thank you very much. The way you present the lesson make it looked so easy. The explanation also very smooth and easy to follow.
I agree with you 100%. I definitely understand why we use the basic problems to learn algebra. But I don’t understand why people use algebra on simple problems in real life that can be solved very easily without algebra.
Dear Lovemetu and Cherrytime22 I do understand your view and it is something that is discussed by maths teachers. It is on the syllabus though so the students have no choice but to study it. We therefore try and do what we can to help them understand it. I have to say though that I do think teaching algebra is important. Prior to teaching I worked in academic research and then in industry and I used algebra regularly. While studying algebra as a teenager I had no idea of my career and it was not planned. The maths I studied opened doors for me that would otherwise have been closed. I would not like to close doors for the students I teach by not teaching algebra to them. Who knows what they will do when they are older. Perhaps an alternative view is that more students should be studying maths degrees (and science, engineering). That is certainly one of my ambitions
I completely disagree with you. So many young people cannot do even the most basic math's when they leave school. Much of the reason is that they do well ( as I did ) till they are forced to struggle to learn something called Algebra which with myself and many others then and also now leads to complete confusion and as you cant get a pass without it, leads to them dropping out of the subject. So why not concentrate on what they can do well ? I left school as a person who had no exam passes in math's, purely because I could not grasp even the basics of Algebra, yet I loved normal math's and could run rings round many of those who had high qualifications in maths ( as I can still do ! ). I passed my city and guilds engineering exams without ever using algebra, in fact I was student of the year and as I said I taught a math's teacher how to do a complex gearing math's problem that he messed up doing algebra !! Cant you open up your mind from its closed position and see that it would be of far more practical use to teach everyday things to young people like how to manage their own personal finance, how to work out the interest rates on their credit cards, bank accounts, how to avoid getting into debt, get the best deals for shopping etc, etc than to try to stuff their brains with something that has very little use in everyday life ? I was a failure at school at math's, my math's teachers deserted me as I had like many others a mental block with Algebra, yet I have thrived at all things finance and engineering since !! I have also received award's for gadgets I invented for use at work. As a last note, my father worked all his life in the bank.....but like me had not a clue how to do Algebra !!
lovemetu As a footnote, I noticed on the bbc web page recently a worldwide test for maths problems relating to maths grades for students worldwide where uk came low down a list compared to China etc. I got 100% of the questions right, far higher than the average of Uk, China anywhere...Me a failure at maths due to Algebra ( which is still double dutch to me !! ) so how do you explain that ?
As you say its on the syllabus and you have no choice but to teach it and the students have no choice but to struggle to learn it. But why is this so fixed an option ? Long term we need to perhaps consider other options, perhaps for those wishing to study Science, physic's and chemistry etc the chance to study Algebra, for the rest including people such as myself who have a complete blank head when it comes to Algebra, well don't throw them on the scrap heap as I was treated but instead the chance to study and gain qualifications in something of a more practical type of maths which will be of more everyday use to them with subjects that also involve personal finance etc. Many young people now cannot even do their times tables or do any calculation without a calculator, when I was a kid we learnt to do more mental arithmetic which I can still do now and surprise youngsters with this skill !! How many people can do Algebra once they have left school for a few years ? I don't know anyone who can, so rather a waste of time to base exam results on a subject rarely used in normal everyday life. !! Lastly many years ago students were taught that they had to learn another semi useless subject called Latin, what happened to that !!
lovemetu Struggled to learn it at school, never used it since and forgot how to do it now. Your comments make a lot of sense. As you rightly say it should be a separate subject to study, it hinders more than helps youngsters to learn maths, my kids hate it and find it such a struggle but like you were, are good at maths using numbers.
no1knowledge many fail to understand that algebra also helps in life in general when it comes to solving problems. Today it's even easier than before, with videos and tutorials online. The help is out there. You just need to reach out and get it.
Dear Maths520 Im 11 years old and in year 6 but i still dont get this, my Maths teacher thaught us Algebra in class but i did not get it. When we started algebra in math I got there a little late and I missed like 3 lesson and when I was given the work and it confused me to the point were I broke down into tears lol
I have a math midterm tomorrow, and the only thing i didnt really understand was Algebra. This is only the first video, (going to watch all of them) but it has tought me more than my teacher has done in 2 years. You really saved my grade :) you earned my like and subscription :)
Was never good at mathematics in my whole life and became an artist to keep distance from this subject until I had to take a GRE test for the phD admission and now everything is easy. (Not only speaking about this video) Does the human brain evolve based on age? Hmmmm weird ,... but I am just amazed.
I learn more in this 15 min video than I learn in 2 months of teaching in school.

I know that 2n+3n= 5n but i dont know subtraction division or multiplication PLEASE HELP!!!!!
easy girl here the solution, example
substraction: 5n-3n=2n and 4n-7n=-3n
division: 6n : 2n =3n, 12n : 3n =4n
. mean times
multiplication: 4n . 3 =12n, 5n . 2n =10n*2,

For 2a+2b could you just say it equals 4ab
it stays the same thre are the same numbers but different variables u can only do that when you divided or multiply
John Ryan Gomez
no it's not. 2•a=2a
No, because is not "a times b" nor "b times a" . Is "two times a" plus "two times b".
Doesn't that mean it's 423?
Very helpful 👍
it is iteresting
ann-marie adams But not your spelling.

you earned my like and subscription :)
How’d it go
Me watching this after getting 23% on my algebra test
I couldn't understand math at all in high school, but now at 42, my mature mind sees it as quite simple now. Amazing how the brain changes over time.
I get it.
Soooooo easy!!!!!
For u to say🤦🏽♀️😔
Thank you so so so much. I don’t understand my math teacher at all but your lessons are amazing!
this is very fine to me
Was never good at mathematics in my whole life and became an artist to keep distance from this subject until I had to take a GRE test for the phD admission and now everything is easy. (Not only speaking about this video)
Does the human brain evolve based on age? Hmmmm weird ,... but I am just amazed.
