China’s Dream to Control the World With Rare Earths Shattered, Profits Crash

  • Profits of Chinese rare earth giants plummeted, with rare earth exports declining year after year. How much longer can the "rare earth card" be played? China’s monopoly is on the verge of collapse, with the global rare earth map undergoing massive changes, and the West taking the lead.

      especially for us here in the US, it’s disgusting how long our businesses financially backed and supported that country despite it’s less than moral intentions. I hope we start seeing less “made in China” on the shelves so we can finally start backing our own/ other countries production lines.

      China still has something like 30% of the supply of rare earths (which are actually common, stupid name) in their own country and more than 20% from mining rights acquired on other countries. What China has an advantage of is not the supply but the factories in place and lax regulations that allow the company to make a profit. If this was done in the states there would be environmental offset carbon dollars and ground water/ air quality testing that the companies would have to waste more money on.

      most political differences are just made up by media to rile voters up and make them feel they need to choose sides. Once more people wake up to that and start forming their own opinions separate from what the news tells you we’ll start seeing some improvement. It’s not as bad irl as you see on TV, news is always going to be sensationalized

      Top heavy corporations fail and normally more nimble took their place. That can't happen in China, because these corporations have close ties with CCP and CCP can't be chanced because China isn't democracy.
      Democracy isn't cure to all, because some dimwits just vote the same party through their lives, but at least they stop voting when the party fails too much. That's why democracy and capitalism are self-repairing entities as long as there aren't monopolies.

      There's more to blame than just him. Basically the whole nation is corrupt, and it's citizens routinely screw and scam one another. In fact, a popular saying there is, "If you can cheat, cheat". Most likely the military corruption is worse than Russia. If they ever tried to invade another country, there's nothing to worry about. They'd get their butts kicked.

      For a long time now I’ve been noticing a heavy-handedness, an arrogance, as you say, and a severity and stiffness from xi.
      He’s like this really severe parent who always believes he knows best, who will brook no argument, not even discussion, will never admit he’s wrong, wants to know what you’re doing at all times, and so on. I could go on and on, but I don’t think I need to. You just look at other countries who are getting it right, but then you see the mess that is China currently. It’s not rocket science, they’re so good at copying, it’s too bad they’ll never copy a better way of governing.
      So yes, what you said can be extrapolated to the country, as well. Things could have been so good, but instead…

      At 5:14 and 6:21 : China agued that part of the tariff was for the west to pay the cost of accumulated environmental damage to China due to mining, but the WTO ruled that China's poor environmental management couldn't be billed to the rest of the world, i.e. include the cost of environmental controls in the cost of the product, but don't back bill the west for your previous years of environmental sloppiness.

      Many countries outside of China have these resources. But China has been selling theirs cheap, so mining companies around the world shrugged their shoulders and didn’t always bother trying to compete.
      But they did a lot of exploration and mapping work, as well as drawing up development plans, cost estimates, and tapped a lot of the political folks on the shoulders to say, “not today, but down the road, when China’s massively over produced mines dry up, or they try blackmail you by withholding them or suddenly start charging insane prices for it, you WILL want to help us expedite this project.”
      “Here’s what our prospect contains, what it’ll cost to get online, and how long it’ll take to get the first refined ore products out. Just keep us in the back of your mind. Cheers!”
      So there are a lot of these sites out there. Many like the Strange Lake and Misery Lake (aptly named, mosquito hell 😑) prospects in Quebec. After our job was done, they were doing just enough work on it over the past 12 years to keep their mining claim current and slowly improving the site characterization. Just waiting for the best opportunity to kick it into high gear…. 😊

Why couldn't many oligopoly and monopoly organizations maintain their fixed market shares in diverse industrial businesses so far? Cornering the market on a product in free markets is impossible and always results in massive losses for the monopoly. China has used huge subsidies in an attempt to corner the market on rare earth metals, and now the competition will destroy that investment.

  • @davewang202
    @davewang202 22 дні тому +1

    "Rare Earth" minerals are typically not particularly rare. The difficulty involved with the extraction and processing of rare earth minerals is that they are (typically) fairly polluting. In the west, all the mines and processing steps are heavily regulated - no one wants to have rivers and streams contaminated with heavy minerals as by products of rare earth processing. So you have to get numerous licenses and environmental studies, etc. etc. Add in the cost of labor and all the other stuff, cost of extracting and processing rare earth is just a lot more expensive than in a place where licenses and environmental studies are suggestive in nature. So the natural law of the market economy prevailed - the low cost producer wins. However, once we get to a situation where the material is considered to be strategic rather than something that should be left entirely to market dynamics, then the market share distribution of the rare earths can be re-distributed. The equation remains the same though - in China and in the west. Extracting and producing the stuff is just a balance between paying for the care and attention of not damaging the environment and getting the minerals that you want, or not paying for the care and attention of preserving your environment and just getting the minerals you want - the latter will always be lower cost. However, it's not a particularly useful for blackmail purposes, because it's just an issue of money and time, not an issue of exclusivity of production sites.

    Then a few months ago, turns out it has the largest lithium reserves in the world. Then a month ago another huge discovery. But wait. There's much more(multiple sites). It just hasn't been completely confirmed yet. Officially anyway.
    Most countries have a lot of resources.
    They merely need to be located, officially proven, and the big issue. Actually setting up to extract them. That initial cost can be quite expensive.

  • @bwhog
    @bwhog 16 днів тому

    And why has the world become dependent on China? Partly because of monopolistic practices but also partly because the global Left won't allow mining in pretty much any form. So when you can't utilize your own resources, you're forced to get them from somewhere else. This has been the case for the last 40 years, that it has become harder and more expensive to extract minerals within the developed world because of these obstructions. I promise you that mining will be opposed to the bitter end in Alaska and California. Alaska at the federal level and California at the state level. Maybe at some point, people will learn a lesson from this.

    I shudder to think about what might have happened had Poo-Bear kept his world domination comments to himself, had actually learned from the West how to research, invent, create and produce and kept his ego in check, paid lip service to who the real cash cows were in his country, not built a military that caused fear and consternation in other and just bided his time. If he had only played nice with everyone until he was number one economically and learned how to produce without stealing............ He might have truly been able to become number one in the world and realized his maniacal dream of becoming Emperor Xi.... We got lucky.

    it's good that the world supply of rare earth may be expanding, but mine development takes time and a lot of capital, and must be profitable. So all these developments depend on prices and demand and politic.

    • @bythelee
      @bythelee 22 дні тому +3

      The key factor here is that China has shown its hand as wanting to use dominance of supply as a lever to get whatever it wants - and is prepared to break WTO rules to do so.
      The rest of the world has woken up to this blackmail, and (particularly the US) has been prepared to fund and subsidise un-economic mines that had previously closed with "guaranteed business". Even if the trade markets show a price crash, such as has been hurting the Chinese rare earth producers lately, those contracts with US military guarantee sales at a fixed price, making these revived mines viable regardless of whatever stunts China pulls. "Profitable" is not a factor in "Strategic necessity". What price for independence?

      China is all about trying to control every aspects of anything that will give them power over the Western Nations at any risk including the environment, they over played their hand in the incident with Japan by pulling their supplies to Japan, instead of folding to China Japan and the other Western Nations got the much needed boot up the rump to wake them up to the underhanded moves of China. Something that all the people of the world saw what was happening but governments were too blind to see that they had fallen into the trap until now. Yes as we love our freedom that we have we also love our environment as well, if it means they have to work harder to produce what is needed but keeping the damage to the barest minimum I’m all for paying just that much more if it gives us the freedom from Chinas greed for control.
      As for Mongolia I don’t think China will make a move right now as the West will step in to protect them this time around.

    Rare earths are not rare. The only reason that China has such a large share of rare earths processing is because of environmental regulations in the west, especially the in US. As with many other material processing industries the west has just exported pollution to China. Is this ethical?

    • @captaindoomsdayreloaded6685
      @captaindoomsdayreloaded6685 20 днів тому

      This is part of the hypocrisy of the environmental movement. They want electric cars and solar panels but don't want the industrial infrastructure necessary to produce those products "in their backyard." Better to let the Chinese do the manufacturing so that the environmentalists can maintain our "holier than thou attitude."

      Wishing for it is great. But...
      Realistically, we will always need raw materials. Whether rare earth minerals, sand (glass, ceramics, concrete), gravel, cement, aluminium, iron, coal...
      Maybe someday we can get it from asteroids... (excepting fossil fuels).
      I think the key is not to oppose mining, but finding ways to do it without destroying the environment.

    Speaking as an American, These F35s are a disaster. I call it the FMF (Flying Metal Failure). Only a handful of them are even fully operational. They couldn't beat an F16 with drop tanks in a visual dogfight. Way over budget. Way behind time. They offered to build a plane that could 'do everything' (their real goal was to milk the taxpayers of as much money as possible), and gave us a plane that does everything not so well. At the very best it's a long distance missile chucker when we didn't even need a new plane. The F22 (The first aircraft you showed) was a fantastic fighter made to clear out the skies and give us total air superiority. And they stopped producing it just when it was becoming more affordable to produce. Now why is that?
