COMPLETE ABORTION:- When the product of conception is expelled en mass. It is called complete abortion.
clinical features:-
1) The history of expulsion of fleshy mass per vagina followed by:
• Subsidence of abdominal pain
• Vaginal bleeding becomes trace or absent.
2) Internal examination reveals:
• Uterus is smaller than period of amenorrhoea.
• Cervical os is closed
• Bleeding is trace
• Examination of the fleshy is found intact
MANAGEMENT:- The effect of blood loss, if any should be assessed & treated. If there is doubt about complete expulsion of the products, uterine curettage should be done.
INCOMPLETE ABORTION:- When the entire product of conception are not expelled instead a part of it is left inside the uterine cavity. It is called incomplete abortion.
Clinical Features:- History of expulsion of a fleshy mass per vaginam followed by:
• Continuation of pain in lower abdomen, colicky in nature, although in diminished magnitude.
• P/V reveals uterus smaller than period of gestation, patulous cervical os often admitting tip of the finger & varying amount of bleeding.
• On examination the expelled mass is found complete.
Termination:- the product left behind may lead to
• Profuse bleeding
• Sepsis
• Placental polyp
• Choriocarcinoma
Management: - Patient should be resuscitated before any active treatment.
Early abortion: - D&C under general anaesthesia is done.
Late abortion: - The uterus is evacuated under general anaesthesia & the product is removed by ovum forceps or by blunt curette.

In incomplete abortion some parts of fetus or amniotic sac comes out of the uterus. The baby is not alive inside, but if not managed and emptyed the uterus of left over parts in time chances of infection, and clotting disorders will increase.
