  • The Light Lens Lab is made to be an exact replica of the 35mm f/2 8 Element by Leica. Do you think they did a good job? How is the image quality for 1/4 of the price of a Leica Lens?

    The Leica SL is great with vintage lenses in general, and really good with film-era M-series lenses. It was designed with this in mind, a custom sensor that has an ultra-thin cover glass that directs the light without detortion. And, the still very good EVF lets you see what the lens is doing, easy to focus, can see and correct for focus shift over the focus range that sometimes happens with vintage lenses, and pinpoint focus (zoomed in) with fast lenses. Of course, it is not an M-series camera which is more compact and still fun to use. But balances well, and has other advantages. Love my SL, but also have a monochrom and film M-series for those times I want to have the rangefinder experience.

    Great review. The creative use of flare really added life to the shots, but also showed the advantage of using an SL over an M camera. My only gripe with the SL is it made me long for an M camera… I now have both and they’re fantastic, though an expensive addiction. If you’ve not tried it, the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 is absolutely wonderful on the SL.

    Yeah, it's field curvature, for sure. But it's likely more of a combination of the lens being a very old, strictly film camera design on a mirrorless camera. I know the SL is pretty good work adapted lenses, but that's moreso because of the built in corrections.
    The same thing happened to me for years using the 50mm summilux on a Sony a7. Eventually I just sold the lens because it only really made sense on an M10 where you wouldn't get that wild field curvature.

    The lens flare shots at 7:21 and 8:07 and 8:21 are gorgeous. Nice work and cool lens!
    Curious if you considered a digital M camera before picking up the SL. If so, what specifically made you choose SL over M?

    • @hunterhart1
      @hunterhart1  Рік тому +1

      Impulsivity made me choose the SL and all of the lenses. I put my GFX for trade for an M240 and a few lenses on FB marketplace and this came in and said “screw it, let’s try this out” I’ve had the M240 for a year and missed using it but I really enjoy the SL and I’m glad I got the opportunity to have one! I think my next camera will be an M10 in a year or so.

    The shots are beautiful. Why not M for manual lenses? Are you zooming into an image when focus peaking?

    • @hunterhart1
      @hunterhart1  Рік тому +4

      Honestly, I was tired of using the GFX and wanted to get back into the Leica system. Had my camera for sale or trade on FB market place for about a month and a guy wrote me with this trade and I took it kind of on impulse. I really wanted my m240 back but never saw a trade (until last week when someone was offering an M240 with one lens for the GFX and a couple lenses lol). In my mind I would grab this and shoot it for a year and then sell it and buy another M Mount camera like the M10. The way I see it, I don’t have the longest time on this earth, I love trying new cameras and I wanted to try this one out. Not disappointed at all + I am getting a sigma lens for it pretty soon that I’m excited about so I’ll have some AF going on.
      I’m zone focusing for the most part and then if I’m shooting wide open and far away I’ll pop into my image real quick. The focus peaking works a lot better than my Sony did (I tested this) and the system itself is just so much more enjoyable to use.
      The answer to your question: impulsivity.

  • @Hektormydog
    @Hektormydog 10 місяців тому +1

    Some vintage lenses (or a copy of them in this case) did not fully correct for Field Curvature. It was a compromise in design with other optical properties a priority. A good example was the original 1930s Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5, very sharp with good contrast in the center even wide open, but very pronounced outer field/corners that focused closer than the center focus plane. It can be used creatively in composition, and the advantage of the EVF of the SL is that you can see what the lens is doing, and not just guess like with the finder of an M-series.

    Firstly, great video and photography. Your video was populated to my feed probably because I have been doing research on the SL. My “work” cameras are my old and older Canon DSLR’s. A 5DIV and a 1DsIII are my worker tools. I throw in my Sony A7ii or a6000 as back ups at times. My film cameras and my EDC Fujifilm XPro 2 are my for “me” personal work cameras. I have been trying to justify a Leica SL as another personal work camera. It is not lighter than my 5DIV. Nor will it give me markedly better AF. It will allow me to adapt my vintage lenses including my vintage Leica glass. Does it make more sense to get a modern Sony or Canon?

    • @hunterhart1
      @hunterhart1  Рік тому +1

      I just had this discussion yesterday with someone. I think it makes sense if you need the things they offer like faster and continuous AF, eye AF, stabilization and video specs. But as I am a single dot focus person, most cameras work for me and I don’t use eye af very often on the cameras that I have with that ability, so for me it can be overkill. Having an EVF on the other hand is so nice for adapting lenses since you can see what the hell is going on. It’s all about preference. My last video hit on this a bit if you’d like to check that out!

      But I’m thinking about a Leica camera for a long time.. the m10 would be a dream but that rangefinder thing + only MF is not for me I think 🤔😏. The Q/Q2 could be an option, but only 28 mm. The SL is cheaper und u get AF + changeable lenses.
      Do u think the SL could be a replacement for my Sony A7iii that I’m actually don’t use that much and a addition for my beloved X Pro3? 🥹

    • @hunterhart1
      @hunterhart1  Рік тому +3

      @@E.S.87 so in some of my earlier terrible quality videos you could tell how much I loved my Q and the M240 (too slow though). The SL had the same sensor as the original Q and I’m assuming the same AF speed which to me isn’t bad unless you’re doing anything in continuous AF, which I don’t really.
      The A7iii beats all of these cameras on paper in just about every way but to me it’s more about how the camera makes you feel. I still have 2 A7iiis that I never use (my wife used one and the other is for emergency or if I’m being lazy). The thing here is… why do I never pick up the Sony? It’s just not fun. It’s a work horse and designed that way. All of the Leica cameras that I’ve had have been very enjoyably to use. I do have to say that I found myself using an external evf for my M240 when shooting wide open to get critical focus so if you get the M10 you may end up in that situation. If you’re someone who stops down it wouldn’t be a concern. The lenses are over priced so I’d get something M mount 3rd party unless you’re just slinging cash.
      The Leica Q is top notch but of course limiting with the 28 but such a fun camera to use.
      The SL is a lot more affordable and has the great design and sensor, overall a joy to use.
      Any camera can be replaced with another camera, it just depends on your personal preference. I’m choosing any modern Leica camera over my Sony 90% of the time just because of the fun and creative aspect. That’s just me though.

    Hi Hunter ... about your move to the Leica SL etc. … when I look at your photos, it makes NO difference at all to me with which camera / lens you photograph. The pictures are ALL "outstandig" and have their own "Hunter style".
    If you get more comfortable with the SL, there is no need to justify it. You even manage to take good pictures with every camera … and manual focus too, which I can't!
    And one more thing: many of your pictures also "live" from the fact that you obviously build up a good relationship with your models. And that is much more worth than the camera or a certain lens ... I understand that you also experiment a bit and nerdily search for your best solution. It is not meant disrespectfully, but even this phase also eventually passes over time ...

      I had the M240 for a year, reviewed it and carried on. I’ll eventually go back to the range finder, it’ll always be the most enjoyable camera in my opinion but really loving the SL for now.

      M and SL are just different and both have a place if one can afford it.

    why the SL and not a M10 version or even the M11?
    i just find the SL such an unattractive camera... and if you just use manual focus lenses why even bother.

      You can get Leica gear at every price point as they have been making stuff for a very long time. Just consider the discontinued lines, like the old Barnacks or the R-System for film or the CL/TL-System for digital. I bought my first Leica camera (digital) for 399 Euros.
