On Friday, May 8, 1896 at the Salle Saint-Louis, Curtis Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, USA, Louis Cyr produced a series of historical achievements On the fly, in a single movement, the right arm and left arm, a dumbbell 188 ½ pounds (record); Developed a left arm dumbbell 258 ¼ pounds; Right held horizontal with a dumbbell 131 ¼ pounds for 5 seconds (record) arm; In crucifix (Iron Cross), a 97 ¼ pounds dumbbell with your right hand and 88 pounds left hand simultaneously for 10 seconds (record); The right shoulder and developed a dumbbell 162 ½ pounds in 36 consecutive repetitions (record) hand; A deadlift with both hands a combined 1897 pounds (record) load; A deadlift, right hand, a combined 987 pounds (record) load; Shoulder of the right hand of a barrel of cement weighed 433 pounds (record). A total of 7 ½ tons (14 455 ½ pounds) seven successful within two hours of tests.

If i recall, rogue has been around for awhile doing strongman and powerlifting equipment...crossfit just came on the scene as a unified sport (whereas powerlifting has hundreds of sanctioned leagues in the U.S. alone) so when they started buying stuff in bulk it got easy to say rogue fitness is the crossfit equipment spot.
Man, it's all strength and power sports. The more they grow, the better the competitions get, the better athletes we see in each sport. No reason to hate anyone. Sure, crossfit has a very marked endurance element to it but it's still mainly about using explosive force to move heavy weights.
They are using a safer version of the dumbell as claimed in the beginning of the video and are trying to lift it using gear to help them, like those modern belts, and are still having a hard time. That says a lot about Cyr's strengh!.
Mike Burke's was the most impressive by far, to me. Intense. And he was by far the lightest guy out of all those who got 4 reps, not to mention the oldest.
cyrs dumbell was leadfilled and had to be slowly curled in orde to keep the balance. than he would just slowly extend his arm without using momentum from legdrive. back than the modern day performance enhancing drugs were not available. cyr was one of a kind
You guys forgot Mike Burke's title and rep count, did he do 3 or 4? In the video I counted 4 but the second one looked like it could have been a second angle shot of the first one.
Victor Delamarre a fellow french canadian lifter of the time of louis Cyr did 309,5 lbs DB lift with one hand at a weight of 154 pounds. A lift greater than anything of these days and more than louis cyr without drugs. Here is the proof in french in this article : fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Delamarre PLEASE LIKE THIS SO PEOPLE SEE THE TRUE RECORD
Correct me if I am wrong, but Cyr didn't push press his dumbbell, he would press it without leg drive. At least that's the way it was done in the 2013 movie they made about his life. Some people look at the numbers and think that Paul Anderson was stronger than Cyr as he is credited with a 350 lb single arm press, but nobody has ever been able to duplicate Cyr's lifts in strict fashion.
Don't forget it was also the age of trickery and cons at that time. He probably had 2 dumbbells, one that was the real weight and a second much lighter one he'd roll out to do the actual lift. I'm sure it was still heavy as hell but people bought into anything back then. The normal guy back then would have problems just picking up a 100+ lbs dumbbell...especially since the average guy never lifted a single weight in their life. Big thing with him is he was farmer strong but so are most of these guys ...add the juice and they're on another level and he would have been too if he had access to them.
Louis Cyr didn't put the weight on his shoulder with two hands, he took it from the ground with one hand and directly over his head. Strongest man to ever live.
you know what? Zydrunas would prob win in today's contests where he trained his whole life. But do a contest of Louis cyr weights (barrel, anvils, ect) and no ways.
Last November in Austin I was fortunate to have a tour of the Stark Center on the campus of UT. Saw this and other incredible old time items. If you are ever in Austin Tx you need to check out this place.
Allan T Cry never trained with weights, he was genetic freak but if he trained he would lift enormous weights with one arm, Cry never lifted to his absolute max. You cant beat Cry
I don't know if anyone notice but Zydrunas the last guy one the video elbow sleeves. Well those are not even elbow sleeves, those are knee sleeves lol. Rehband. I have a pair of those knee sleeves. I may be wrong but that is one big dude. Impressive.
They use their legs to give the weight an initial upward thrust and then drop their bodies allowing the arm to extend out. It basically allows a good portion of the lift to be done with their legs. It's extremely difficult to press that much weight with one arm alone. It's a very similar concept to the way olympic lifters do the clean and jerk as well as the snatch. The legs are more powerful than the arms.
Lyle Arnett, Jr yeah which is why I find these comps weird... People are not truley showing power in that area unless they use the whole body. Same way peeps in the gym tell you to use the muscle rather then thrusting into it.
+brian serious Yeah I get that, which is my point, why don't they all just reduce the weight each to what they can actually lift as a true show of strength. It's like me running a race and being pushed over the finish line at the last minute...
ryanKFC Well, what you're talking about is a power lifting competition and they have those by the score already. The whole point of "strongman" is to move heavy things by any BODILY means possible, and it takes a special kind of person to be able to do that. It's about the spectacle as much as the strength exhibition. And you're analogy isn't quite right. It would be like you running a race and not being pushed by someone else, but crawling your own way over the line out of sheer determination. These men are some of the strongest humans alive. And "strongman" is basically them saying, "Ok. No more rules about strict form or procedure. Let's just pick up super heavy, awkwardly shaped things." When you look at it from that angle, you can have a lot of fun watching these events.
true but if i recall, they scaled the weight accordingly. The original cyr didn't weigh 274 lbs but gave a feel of about that so they gave a true weight of 274 lbs while allowing a bar that could be more safely gripped. Back in louis cyr's day, this was his landmark thing he would risk his safety to do...these guys compete for a living alot of times and wouldn't risk major injury on an exhibition.
The biggest accomplishment of Louis Cyr was in October 12, 1891, in Montreal: on this occasion, he holds four horses, arranged so that two pairs of horses exert a pull in opposite directions.
boby thi As in a conventional deadlift from normal depth? If that's what the claim is, it's false. Even if it were a partial, still false. I'm all for alot of the old day strength myths, but that one is not correct, and not possible honestly.
These men are outrageously strong, and incredible to watch. Why risk their safety with this press? It would be sad to see one of these athletes get hurt and risk further competition and entertainment for us fans.

Back when strict pressing was an Olympic sport, i think people were hitting 500+ pounds so I don't see why somebody out there couldn't work to achieve a strict press with that dumbbell.
There good but Louis Cyr took it with 1 hand from ground to shoulder with no swing where these guys are swinging and using momentum they would never be able to lift Louis dumbell as they said its a safer weight read on Louis weight and you will understand what i mean ....it was a shifting weight that if you try swingning you will break your wrist or somethin ...

I srsly dont think thats possible.
Zydrunas! My fave strongman.
They never mention Mike Burke's rep count.....his name doesn't even show!
Rob Howe I was just about to comment on that, thanks for stating his name. It looked like he had 4 reps
Theses videos are just epic.
You guys forgot Mike Burke's title and rep count, did he do 3 or 4? In the video I counted 4 but the second one looked like it could have been a second angle shot of the first one.
Pretty certain, judging by both his reaction and other feats of strength, that he got 4.
Mike Burkes energy is insane!
I love how Mike Burke just slams the dumbbell down.
And how proud he looks up 🤩🤩
Why isn't Mike Chang in this competition? I bet he could lift the Cyr dumbbell easily, have you seen his abs?!
Wake da fok up he will snap in half these guys are just pure mass and huge men
Hassan Khan
Yes, Mike Chang could easily snap these guys in half. Those abs are pure power!
this guys have better abs than mike chang
kebabdegato
Of course they don't, they're fat, they don't have a six pack!
I would figure Moustafa Ismail should be here have you seen his biceps. xD
Dimitar is possibly a dark horse competitor in these comps.
P.S. Mike Burke's hair (face and scalp) is awesome, and good for at least 1 extra rep.

delamarre for many was cosidered a fraud and a fake
interesting, just read an article and maybe it's true that it is fake
some beleive cyr was a fraud too but i dont buy it.

dude louis cyr used to curl 300 pound dumbbells and then push them up slowly he was a legend
But can they do it on a cold rainy night in stoke?
What's are the songs playing throughout the video?
RIP Loui Cyr
What is the name of the song ???????
probably the most impressive thing ive seen in strongman
Very cool!
Came here for The Mountain!
Very god this Brian!! O esporte está mais conhecido no Brasil, venham para caruaru!! Come to Caruaru!!
Brian Shaw and Zydrunas Savickas both touched that dumbbell. I wish I could get my picture taken next to it.
Song at 1:18
This video gets me fucking PUMPED. Sick music in the background as well, who is it?
When did Zach Galifiankis get so strong? 2:18
Beard man is a fucking monster. He beasted the lumber carry too.
What happened to Oberst?
how many did "hacksaw Jim Dugan" do, wait I mean Mike Burke!!!
Paul anderson did a 380 pound dumbell.... just putting that out there. He was stronger than any man alive today.
WahdicalWeftist many men have witnessed his best lifts. 1200+ squat, 600+ bench, 1000 deadlift. He also cleaned and military pressed 485
I think his best witnessed and weighed DB push press, which was more like a side press, was 330. He used to do 250 for reps in exhibitions, though.
Him and Louise Cyr two Stongest men to ever Live.
No mention of how many reps Mike Burke got?
Hafthor Bjornsson is "Mountain" from Game Of Thrones. Pardon if you knew that already.
Love this event so much😁
Who's the monster at 2:19?
Mike Burke
If only my gym had that dumbbell...
274 mother fucking pounds! holy fuck! with one hand!
What's the name of that beast right before Brian shaw ??
Mike
But can they hold back to horses strapped to each and flip to of them back
Louis cyr was a beast.
no, he ate the beast and raised the beast's family as his own
Louis Cyr did it with no drugs all natural and he did not push press it, but he pressed it and did not use his legs, no of this guys could do it
Song? Much appreciated if anybody shares!

Whats with the pushing body down, slight thrust then using legs to extend? Why are they not simply using entire arm to lift?
They use their legs to give the weight an initial upward thrust and then drop their bodies allowing the arm to extend out. It basically allows a good portion of the lift to be done with their legs.
