- Collated from various sources - this is a quick and easy way to view a wide selection of the MTV Idents without hunting around You Tube. The Ads date from way back in 1981 when the station opened, to circa 1995 as the golden age came to an end. Denis Leary idents aside, this compilation comprises the 10, 20 and 30 second clips rather than the longer ones they also ran (Things Never Seen, Joe's Apartment etc).

These are real artistic commercials. I usually watch them for inspiration before painting
It's kinda got an art school mentality about it. You're just seeing a reel comprised of the work of the studios of these past few decades.
Me too!
For its time, MTV was the coolest thing ever. I could(and did) watch it all day long.
Same. But not anymore 😭
@@black6dahlia807 Who doesn't like 16 & pregnant, I know guys who married the girls who watch that nonsense, poor idiot guys!
Got took over by celebrities just want flaunt their lifestyles in are faces, after the early 2000s.
Our cable system got MTV about 8 months after it started (so that would put it at about Spring 1982). I think I watched it at least four hours a day, between 1982 and 1986 when I went off to college and lost interest.
Hell MTV raised me! Feel ya bro
As a graphic designer this is a great source of inspiration
Yeah maybe I can take some inspirations from this for my college major.

@@nevan6454 MTV is nothing these days
@@ftjm69 no teen or young adult will pine for what's been hidden from them. This video holds a glimpse of how much better of a world we had, when MTV was actually cool.
There's a generation of animators and stop motion photographers who really got to shine doing stuff like this before computer graphics was really a thing.
Its a shame these are mostly uncredited as far as I can see.
This stuff is still interesting to look even years later.
It's sad they are. Some of them do post their ID's on UA-cam and Vimeo if you look for 'em.
Here's a couple on Vimeo already!

Ummm Computer Graphics-CG was really thing by 1982 with Tron, Channel 4 Logo, etc not in 1981 when MTV came out
See kids, this is what we grew up watching. Damn were we lucky.
Steff Jacey 90s kid here 👍😊❤
U know whats good in our generation we can watch any videos from the past generation stupid whiny 90's kids
Damn right you guys where
I’m so friccin salty rn🤧😭😂
and now we're growing up with adult swim bumpers.
just think of the countless hours these men and women spent making these bumpers. For the majority of these they didn't have software like today, and yet their surreal, original, and sometimes insane style penetrated multiple generations for a brief period of time.
meesterrain Yea ❤
it was even better without the technology we have today
And how long they had to spend to time them correctly. It must have been a nightmare to do back in the 80s given the technology and how it wasn’t as advanced as it is now.
I wasn't even alive when MTV was in its prime-time, and yet looking at some of these things still manages to evoke almost nostalgic-feeling emotions in me. I can almost envision in my mind what it was like back then.
I was a kid when mtv first landed.... Bro, you had to be there. There was no such thing as Internet, music CD's werent invented yet, social conscious was in a different place and no such thing as a dedicated music channel on tv. It was a most profound game-changer. The first 4 years of mtv were the most artistically creative images and sounds you ever seen and heard on television. In just those 4 years, MTV inspired more artist and musicians than any network on televsion. If I could go back, I would.
I only discovered these things in 2008 after watching some documentary about logos. I was impressed by each and every one and scared by some.
Even though we lived in The Far Side of the globe we still had the MTV and it was a great time.
now that's how you create a pop culture
Irwin Wade not anymore
There's some absolute gold in this video, stuff I completely forgot about as a kid that actually influenced me massively!
Oh mtv.... what happened to you?
my awnser: the owner of MTV its crazy now
They had to evolve because after a while, you actually get TIRED of watching nothing but music videos.
Have to agree. The music video concept had run its course by the late '90s...pretty much everything you could do in a music video had been done and redone. The network did what it had to do to remain relevant in the new millennium.
Jack Welland they became meme television
The same thing that happened to everything else, it decided to follow trends for profit and be unoriginal
What happend to MTV? Why are they airing only bullshit since the millenium? I grew up watching MTV, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network in the mid 90s. The way these bloopers, bumpers and IDs were made is so creative and mind opening. That's insane how much effort and ambition is in here. It's so fun to watch. I'm so glad to be able to watch it here. Thank you so much for the upload!
They had to evolve because after a while, you actually get TIRED of watching nothing but music videos. It has to be for the youth.
Rob Wilson Today's generation sucks.
You said it yourself .. They are mind opening and thats why they changed it IMO.. its not apart of the new world order :)
Who actually watches that "Catfish" nonsense.
Its not that it couldn't stay just videos. They started remote control.A couple other things. It was ok it was all music related or close tonit, part of pip culture. Then it became a lifestyle channel I guess. And a lifestyle that the fans who carried it their first 20 years or more weren't even interested in that's what I don't get. Then they made mtv2 for just music and maybe an extra or 2 is all but it quickly became just MTV the pop culture channel part 2.And it was a rock n roll station like old FM rock stations, then added a little crossover appeal with rock/country like Alannah Miles etc and pop music, pretty soon rap and hip hop.Well ok,i agreed with that,a core of rock n roll but widen the audience. Then the music booted out rock/country,booted hard rock or metal, then rock all together, until only rap and hip hop and quite a bit of pop remained. And the tv shows only appeal to rap hip hop and pip music pop culture type fans by the big share. Maybe MTV should consider like FM stations,a rock station, country, rap and hip hop, jazz and r and b station, & a station that features hall of fame inductions,MTV and movie bear, aetc. And consider a "classic" MTV,like a classic rock station on FM.Could be huge. How about a "Rock and Wrestling" like started with Wrestlemania and Cyndi Lauper etc?You never know!?
Happy 40th Anniversary to the best classic stuff in music and more since 1981. I WANT MY MTV BACK!
And today is its 41st anniversary.
@@okjeffy6581 - It's 42 now.
Watching this for 1 hour straight feels like some sort of Clockwork Orange experiment.
These ad bumpers contributed A LOT for my endless love to MTV.
Incredible how many of these so easily recognizable even after 30+ years of not seeing them.
Yes, the first 5 minutes of this video, I remember all these strongly
Today's mtv sucks. I love mtv the way it was. Thumbs up if you agree.
Me too.
+Jason Vance It's been years now since Mtv, ironically, isn't about music anymore.
i miss that old mtv :(
Fernando Olavarria We all do.
Jason Vance theres only a few reality shows I enjoyed like rob and big and the fantasy factory. I grew up with that, along with some late reruns of beavis and butthead. But I wish I grew up with this when it actually meant Music TV
I watched this for half an hour just to see the "M" bump at 35:06. Thank you for posting.
CopyCatKid1 dude, i watched this just to see that..xD
I want to go back to this era so bad. It makes me happy and depressed all at the same time.
Hello do you have any full épisodes of mtv ?
I thought I was the only one who Recorded the MTV ID identification logos. You should be given the Nobel prize for the furtherment of humanity. Great video. Thank you
It's amazing how relevant MTV used to be. And it was cool and really avantgarde too.
I miss this classic, weird mtv commercials! Lol
Lee Delos Santos Kinda creepy as well lol
Raisa Cherry I know right?

I love UA-cam. Thank you to everyone for contributing pieces to make this place a haven for nostalgia :)
@37:06 Have not seen that ad (or any of these) in soooo long. That one was my favorite though...I used to piss friends off by making these B sounds constantly. Thank you, WilmsterUK brought back some good memories of when MTV was a good channel.
Still the coolest commercials ever. Nothing can beat it ever since.
Oh, man, the memories... that's when they actually played MUSIC on that channel, and those ID's and bumpers were classics. Friday Night Video Fights, Head Bangers Ball, Martha Quinn, the Top 20 Video Countdown.... I WANT MY MTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4:40 I remember that paint one soooooooo vividly, I used to get up and dance to that little tune as a kid all the time lol 😂 🎨
That one's awesome!
Whats it called?!
It’s called “Dot To Dot”
RIP MTV 1981-1999. Gone at 18, too soon.
These are awesome ... right out of my generation. How sad that MTV abandoned these types of ads. I am particularly thrilled that the one ending in "doodle doodle dee wubba wubba" (20:00) was on here. That one cracked me up the first time I saw it, and it still does today.
Wow, this brings me back to my teenage years in the early 90s. I remember many of these. MTV used to be super artistic and creative before they sold out to reality TV and BS.
Hello mate do you got any full épisodes of mtv ?
Early 90's? Mtv was already not so great then. I saw it when it first hit the airwaves. The world was not ready for the first 4 years of uncensored mtv godliness. You had to be there... America had never seen anything like this..
@@breakfastplan4518 Yes, early 90s was a lot better than late 90s & beyond. Sure it's not the best period in MTV history, but I remember how artistic it was back then. They still had creativity. I wish I got to see those uncensored years, would have been awesome.
@@jesustheillusionist6484 You can say they had creativity in the 90's - but for those of us who were there day one, the 90's mtv signified the end of an era. a significant shift towards cooperate interests.... And thats where things got weird. I still appreciate 90's mtv and beyond, but man... early Mtv was unruly AF. It was like a public access program on Beta-blockers... with a lot of good music. XD
@@breakfastplan4518 oh yeah what is the first song MTV ever play?
I miss the 80s, everything was perfect.
INGSOC yea no drug crisis at all
I was born in 2000 but it seems like there was so much creativity on television and in music during the 80s 😔 wish there was that amount of energy nowadays
You now have 44 comments.
Perfect is right, I had 3 girlfriends I was seeing all at the same time during the 80's
Everyone seems to look back on the 80s thru rose-tinted glasses. A lot of it sucked, but we choose to remember the good times. Fine by me 😎
Before there are new Adult Swim idents, there were old MTV idents.
Missed seeing these bumpers. Good times. :)
Oh those wonderful days. I miss them.
An hour and 5 minutes of MTV nostalgia.
These spots should be in an audiovisual museum, focused only on MTV, and to give us a reminder that with TV you can also make art.
Most of these bumbers are quite creepy but 25:00 that one gave me nightmares as a child. And Boo-bumper at 24:28 is one of weirdest. I still don´t get what´s the idea behind it.
Dok jyrsaa The video at 35:13 scares the hell out of me.
Wtf
I make video shorts myself so this is a goldmine. I can't even watch it for very long because it's so dense with ideas, I get overloaded
Wow this is pretty good.brought back tons of memories.never thought I'd be reminded so fondly of station Id spots. Thanks for uploading amigo.made my day!
18:22 the best (not efficient) and the coolest way to say to young people don’t use drugs, at that time!
1:00:31. Now this is pure 1981 simplicity...the super rare still logo with sunset inside the M. Thanks for finding this!
I have several hours of MTV footage from 1995-96 including idents, music videos and shows. They were recorded on a hi fi stereo VHS recorder from a stereo satellite receiver and are great quality.I have digitised some of the footage but uploading any of it could be risky, knowing what Viacom are like about copyright.
it will be awesome that you upload all that stuff man or upload to mediafire or some like that to download, sorry for the english greetings from chile
+Hi im SnapLife♥ a mi también me gustaría que lo subiera a mediafire yo también soy chileno
hey there would love see the old school mtv my self maybe upload to dailymotion for us .
I preffer what you upload only the idents here. In case of music videos and the shows, you must going to other video sites, like Vidme as a example.
Worst thing that could happen is them asking you to remove it. You can upload it here or on vimeo. Otherwise it'll most likely be forever lost. After 20 years I'd say it's more of a cultural heritage than something Viacom owns. If you really don't want to upload it just share it with someone who would/could.
Back then i sometimes didnt understood these mtv videos.. Now i can see i witnessed art..
MTV classic promos are back in the day
10:07 Danny Antonucci, creator of "Edd, Ed and Eddy" on Cartoon Network.
Nice catch! Thats kind of mind blowing. But i love his more grotesque side. Danny Antonucci an underrated animator.
35:13
I think it's easy to pine for the good old days of MTV but there is so much great weirdness and animation still being made today. We are lucky to have the internet.
I found these after I noticed the MTV doesn't use anything like these anymore. Now just their logo on solid colors over layed on video. Major cultural loss.
I'm a substitute teacher, and one of the classes I subbed was discussing the mid-80s cold War tension. At the base level, all they had to do was read Dr. Seus's Butter Battle Brawl, which was written during this time.
About a week prior, I watched this compilation; it got to the section where they were promoting "99 Luftbalons" and kinda had an epiphany: "This song came out only a few decades ago. Only a few decades back, and we'd all be full of existential dread." A few days later, I learned what I was going to be subbing on. I thought "to these kids, the mid-80s must seem like an eternity ago." When I came in to do the class, before we even started the assignment, I told the students to try think what it would have been like living I that time, and then I started playing "99 Luftbalons". It was arguably my favorite session subbing.
I've been looking for the "Gas Station" one @8:03 for years now. Thank you for uploading!
michigandon You're welcome. Glad you found it!
That one was always one of my favorites. Others were the "M" factory at 2:31 and the "let 'er go!" construction worker at 59:33.
It must be the only one in hd.
Dennis Leary was a collective nightmare we all experienced
Love the old Mtv idents. Remember me and my brother watching the pilot when first aired in Australia 1987. Wish they would make it like it used to be no prego teens. :(
hello mate, do you still got mtv australia with richard wilkins i got some episodes we can trade
And make the stunts actually funny
This is a treasure for the human heritage
Sure is ❤😍👏
A lot of these old MTV bumpers remind me of Nickelodeon's old bumpers.
thats because the team of Fred Seibert & Alan Goodman created many of the MTV bumpers/idents, as well as Nick At Nite, Nickelodeon, and VH-1. Fred/Alan Inc. created some of the best promos
Ooohh, thank you for this piece of information. I did not know that but it's so obvious it's the same creative force behind it all. As a '90s kid that worshipped at the altar of Nickelodeon, I love this!
Coincidentally, they are both owned by Viacom.
the efforts of animating the adverts are insane
Brings back memories.
Looking at these after so many years makes me feel I'm fortunate to belong to an era when TV was just so cool! Don't know what happened to MTV or TV for that matter. All they spew is garbage these days. Being able to get a slice of the old MTV is just gold! Thanks a ton for uploading.
I was too.

mtv was werid and creative back in the 90s
King of Toons stop motion miss that mtv
+ the 80's
90s Mtv was the realest
When the adverts are more interesting to watch than current MTV product.
Indeed 😂❤
Definitely recalled some of these bumpers 😁❤❤
i so remember when MTV had the dibs on future hits with their MTV Exclusive Videos or Sneak Preview Videos. i also remember the Blue and White "Exclusive" logo then in June 1987, then it got bigger and became Green and Yellow. at 20:22
This was the adult swim of my parent's generation.
Liquid TV kicked ass. I watched that back in the '90s. You should check out some clips on YT.

"I want my MTV"
That song has never been more relevant than now. MTV used to be creative and alot of heart went into these. I respect they grew up into the modern times but this has more heart if yoh ask me.
41:00 Lou Reed reciting Macbeth (!)
39:47 I loved that old 1930s style cartoon. And Dennis Leary's anti-drug rants would now not be shown because he has a cigarette.
MTV used to be great.
@32:42 Holy crap, the Brothers Quay!
Happy 40th Anniversary MTV, I Still Want My MTV
You just made my week!
Thank you!
Wow ads you actually enjoyed watching because of their creativity?! what a trip down memory lane. Remembering these ads on TV back when I was teen.
26:22 This one was animated by Joe Murray of Rocko’s Modern Life and Camp Lazlo fame. He said the cow in this MTV bumper later became Heffer Wolfe in Rocko’s Modern Life! 😂😂😂
Oh I see 😮😅
Oh man. I really want this collection, but each bump being a single video.
Growing up in the 80s i was glued to Mtv 24/7, but theres only so much you can take. Taking a break from it once in awhile was neccesary. Looks like the people who survived the 60s and 70s were employed for all of this. Lots of drugs-unreal imagination !😆🤣😂😁👍📽🎬📺🎵🎶
Right in the feels
An absolute trip to the golden days of Music Television. How the mighty has fallen...
The time when most artists, even the underground ones, wished to be aired on this fantastic channel...
Today, it's practically considered shameful due to how low and stupid that channel became...
This is where the creativity lived
A long time ago ,I was watching MTV.And my favourite ad was the one with 2 guys.In the background there was a lorrie built from bricks. One guy was a 'barber',searching the other guy's head for flea or louse. And the guest started to scream and slapped the barber. And they were slapping each other for 5-6 seconds and then become chilled again. I hope you know this one, I'd be happy if you could send me.
PS: there is an another one: 3 drawed monster were humming and saying MTV in really deep voice. Thanks
MTVClassic is really close, damn close to this, its just missing all the artsy promo bumpers which need to be reinsated stat! :) lol
They need to.
They're asleep at the wheel.
All these classic bumpers and stop replaying the same dozen of music videos.
some of these freaked me out as a kid. damn it’s been a while
21:36 It feels so warm! I miss 80s and early 90s...
I do every day.
❤❤ same feeling
i only remember the ones from the 90s I wasn't born until 1985 =(
My parents didn't have cable, so I didn't have my MTV, but for that reason it was even more mysterious and gnomic and weird and my face would melt when I'd see it at friend's houses
It has that impact.
Took me back to the 90s. Reminiscing good old times. The best times the best decade of all time for music and art.
I remember the one at 25:00 freaking me out as a kid... I loved it!
What is that bumper
Corpses Calzone
Early mid-90's MTV was seriously the best era.
Then, conglomeration skewed and screwed...
That era was when it hopelessly tried to quit being a music channel.
I'm wondering, is there anybody out there with hours of the 90's MTV programs, shows, commercials, etc as if you were watching it on TV?
I would love to watch that, plunging back for some moment into my childhood/teenage years... :)
There's hours and hours of it available on UA-cam (I've scoured many of them myself). Just do a search for whatever year you are interested in i.e. 1992 MTV - you can get the awards ceremonies, the summer break specials, Unplugged, Headbangers ball etc - the list is fairly endless.
I am looking for mtv Australia épisodes with richard wilkins

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
7:42 sounds like a The Police song has the rhythm
Definitely has that unmistakable The Police vibe to it. One of the earlier (handful of) bumper clips that featured the signature sounds of bands that were in their heyday.
@@ry8729 whats the song called?!
"If it weren't for MTV, we'd all be complete losers. Right, Dad?!"
90's really was a creative decade. Cant imagine any of todays major channels airing any amateur creativity between songs similar to what's shown here. Used look forward to the creative shorts Mtv played i found them fascinating. Remember lots of short weird animation programmes, these were the professional ones. Love know whats happened to all them and if it possible to watch any. Wow that would be great.
Yep,
I sure do miss the good old days of mtv from back in the day and when it was good.
Miss watching Headbangers ball, dial MTV, MTV top 20 countdown I think it was called.
Hey it's been awhile and it's hard to remember everything here. Had some great times, great memories and great entertainment.
I am very thankful for being around back in those days and having MTV and all those other great programs too.
They're making an MTV classic coming august 1st. All I can say is that I hope they show these classic Idents.
They don't, but that would be sweet
Turns out that it sucks.
i saw two classic commercials like these 1 week ago so..they do. im giving mtv classic a full year first before i dcide if i wanna keep watching or not but for right now it is ok but not great we need a fuller version of this channel. MTV Classic
Ivy Knight This is random but do you know if they show any MJ videos on the MTV classic channel ?
Yes. They do. Sorry for late reply.
The real secret of these idents was figuring out which bands did the background music. For example, @ 7:41 that was clearly 'the police'. Stewart copeland's kit is tuned in a unique way and his Crashes hit like no other crash ever recorded around this time. Andy is clearly the guitarist here and that bassline a a tyical Sting bassline when hes not focused on singing. Even the way the drums come into the bass line is sooo COPELAND! Thats the hidden value of MTV idents.
54:59 my favorite
Simplicity at its best!
That will never gets old.

1:01:28 is my favorite
Wasn't it fun, though? Before MTV became Pregnant single Mom shoots a porno. They played music on tv. Just old fashioned.
Farrah takes it up the backdoor.
More like random sadistic dude showing people and animals doing fuck shit
Loved MTV back then not now too much any more !
I always liked that Cobain joke when Mtv try to get him to tag them. He was like Welcome to Em Pty TV! At first i did not get the joke but as i got older i realized the videos they played were only from a select few with really good bands and videos being denied any play.
