Ghouls are one of the most iconic characters of the Warcraft franchise. First featured as workers in Warcraft 3 and then rising to prominence in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King when they were heavily utilized by the Scourge.
In this video, I talk a bit about ghoul lore, their biology and how they are created. I also go into speculation on why a necromancer would decide to create a ghoul instead of a regular undead as in a forsaken.
Do leave your thoughts if you would like to see more from this series as I already covered abominations and what they are made from so I could also cover more undead and scourge creations.

I’ve always believed that “forsaken” undead were more common in the third war, but after sylvanas’ rebellion, the scourge moved away from “mostly humanoid” undead in favor of one’s that basically couldn’t rebel, hence why we hardly see any forsaken models used by the scourge in wrath, that’s just my own headcannon though.
That's actually a really good theory, haven't seen it that way.
On Warcraft 3, Ghouls were actually scary unit
Yeah they definitely looked different in the RTS.
Why create ghouls?
1) Psychological warfare
2) Timber harvesting
3) Profit!

I always speculated that ghouls were the twisted result of eating the plagued grain during warcraft 3.
Remember that quest in Silverpine forest where you give a pumpkin to a captured farmhand?
He exploded into ghoulness, the Forsaken found one way to create them.
But... there are very intelligent ghouls apperently. I mean in Zul'Drak you get a ghoul costume and help the scourge to gather informations. And nobody bends an eye. That one troll talks to you like any other quest giver and gives you very important and complex missions.
Never forget Timmy's ghoul from Warcraft 3. Probably the only passive Ghould wich retained some of the soul of Timmy

Hello Doron, nice video that sadly didnt explained much about their creation, but as I am diving into undead Roleplay and exploring puss and rott and magical properties as a mage roleplayer, you knew me on Defias Brotherhood as Feltrand Ravensun (heck i am even on start of your how to RP as Belf video) - i have some insight on why are Ghouls raised as they are, a cannon fodder.
In Warcraft 3 Campaign, we can see in cinematics that citizens are disposing of bodies of dead and undeads that striked cities, onto piles and burning them. The zombies therefore releasing their liquids into piles with the untainted populace, and burning smoulders creating a perfect cocoons for massive ressurection of powerfull footmen unit, known Ghouls.
Plague distributed in Andorhal killed off and revived the humans and left them tainted as zombies, the original plague working as a catalyst for many powerfull magics and alchemical researches done by Cult of the Damned.
The Cult of the Damned is made from many sorts of people, not only casters, so to help in them powering up the processes of creating wide army, the majority of spellwork process must be done in advance -
Piling the humans up is probably most likely like a way to create a massive reinforcment. Some ghouls have spikes on backs, which are logically only implanted artificually, be it through melding of bodies together in piles, creating warriors from one human and extra bits. So basically, a ribcage is turned around, to work as a spikes on back, pertruding through body.
To ressurect, using necromancy is one of more viable options, but you need a necromancer and the acolytes to aid at the work. Sometimes Acolytes alone are perhaps enough, but this where in theory at least, i believe Ghouls are made artificially becouse of recognising way of disposing bodies to prevent sickness spreading and using the tactic against the enemy. A perfect pit of undeads.
However, we have also seen, in world of warcraft in Scarlet dungeon, that piles of dead bodies can ressurect on their own, into zombies again, perhaps beein a negation to my theory-
-OR- an enforcer of it, prooving that Plague is hard to deterr and will persist if you pile bodies together. Longer the bodies are laying together and they become tended to by acolytes, pouring necromancy and extra ingrediants of scourge into it, more likely to get efficient ghouls, rather than unefficient zombies.

A bit late, but...
There was the Black Knight dude, who basically started out as a human death knight and every time he died, he turned into another form of undead. First forsaken, then skeleton and then wraith. So there kinda is one, even if he's a Monty Python reference.
The Four Horsemen you raise in legion kind of look like they're summoned spirits made manifest as well, during their raising animations. And think quite a few of them have bodies that should've decayed to skeletons, considering the time of their deaths.

Sence shadowlands gave us new hairstyles, i use ghoul hair for my forsaken unholy dk, soo happy for it.
I just noticed that they are kind of like the wendigo legends
the red bloody old ghoul model looked scariest, these new "onionhead" ghouls just look ridiculous
Yeah, the old ones looked better, same with the old Abominations and their jagged and serrated teeth. New Abominations have regular teeth
Ghouls can speak. They do lose their voices but they do utter words such as: "Must feed" and the like
They can in some cases it mainly depends on how bad the undeath has set in.

Samuel Benedicic A single awing from a hammer/Axe/Sword can easily cut down a skeleton. But a Zombie is likely slower then skeletons yet they also have flesh to protect them and their bite force is like a human. A ghoul on the other hand has long claws on arms and feet and a mouth with super sharp teeth. Also explaining why the Skeleton, zombie, ghoul is more correct. Yes skeletons can bare weapons compared to ghouls and zombies. But ghouls and zombies are more resilient then a skeleton with shut bones. Also you can say that it’s true a skeleton will likely have a good time vs Archers but a pet could easily rip a skeleton apart. They are meant to be used to swarm people and overwhelm them while the abominations and the rest of the scourge army gets into position.

I never quite understood why Blizz decided to make Ghouls in WoW so cartoonish and goofy, the Ghouls from Wc3 were horrifying.

Hello, that is an appropriate name haha.
I always thought of ghouls as "mass produced minions". You know, in my mind it was always like "you can resurect huge numbers of ghouls with just one spell, but creating a forsaken is something you have to do one by one".
Could be a factor as well.
