- If you buy more items than you need to get a discount, you might be guilty of "spaving" - or spending more to save money. While retailers' clever marketing ploys convince you you're getting a deal, the practice often leads to overspending. CBS News MoneyWatch reporter Megan Cerullo explains the financial pitfall and how to avoid it.

Nobody has ever said or will say “spaving” in the future
As one ages, one tends to buy less stuff. Either because you have what you need, or you realize you're building up clutter, or because you know you can do without it. Maybe (darkly) you realize your time on Earth won't be enough to enjoy getting a new toy. Maybe it's because you want to hand down more fluid cash rather than old junk. Finally, you realize the new fun stuff you're buying now will be junk shortly, so why waste your money?
Buy one, get one free. To a young person: It's like half off! To an old person: Now I'll have two of these stupid things around?

I am very guilty of this. Nowadays I just flat out refuse to buy anything if I am expected to spend a certain amount to get free shipping or I will meet the quote and return almost everything in person.
Often said as "buy more save more".
Might wanna work on the name, Spaving is not a thing, and never will be a thing.
"Spending to save" is how my ex wife ran up a $100,000 DEBT! NOT SPENDING, is SAVING! Im GLAD she, and, her DEBTS are GONE!

I never buy anything online and very seldom use an ATM. I only buy groceries with my card, then I walk home and cook for myself. Trust me, you can go from zero to 100 real quick, real quick.
