My favorite doctors are Peter Capaldi and David Tennant. The writing definitely more consistent during David Tennant’s time, without a doubt. However, the fact that Peter Capaldi can make me love his era simply because of his work alone is what makes him top tier. The fact that the best episode was Heaven sent where he acted alone just shows what a diamond Peter was and that maybe he didn’t need a companion (or at least not Clara) .
The Moffat era standout episodes for me are: The Eleventh Hour Amy’s Choice Vincent and the Doctor The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang A Christmas Carol The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon The Doctor’s Wife A Good Man Goes to War The Angels Take Manhattan The Day of the Doctor The Time of the Doctor Deep Breath Listen The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar The Girl Who Died Heaven Sent/Hell Bent The Husbands of River Song Thin Ice Extremis World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls Twice Upon a Time I honestly don’t get the hate that this era gets. It’s the most visually impressive era yet with the best direction, and it’s the richest the show has ever been thematically. Moffat also dedicates all of his finales to intimate character pieces over the technobabble nonsense of series 1-4, which was a welcome change of pace.
Love your choices and reasons. Twice Upon a Time, despite some clunky and exaggerated dialogue form the First Doctor, was for me a marvellous ending. The setting, the intricacies, the concepts - just wonderful. Your list is one I personally would have done excatly the same. Cheers
I agree with your view. The fact you listed more than probably half of his stories either written by him or directed. I don't know what your views ont the last few years have been but I adore the Capaldi run and Smith too. I can never see a likelihood of another Vincent and the Doctor ever occuring again as they seem intent on tuning the Doctor into a superhero with mannerisms never ever shown by him over 60 years. Cheers.
Can we please STOP saying that Doctor Who is a "children's show"? I get that it was originally geared towards children but at this point any children who watched the original show are pensioners and those who started watching the revived series are having children of their own.
Because it is a show for kids. Doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it. Movies like Beauty And The Beast or Spirited Away are also for kids. The real issue is adults thinking that because they enjoyed something made for kids, it shouldn't be considered "for kids" anymore.
Both RTD and Moffat, plus literally EVERY single leading actor to play the Doctor has said MULTIPLE times that Doctor Who is a children's show. Even David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, two people who are famously lifelong fans of the show even well into their respective adulthoods, say it's a children's show. The people who MAKE the show have told us in plain English that the target audience is children, so it quite literally is MADE FOR KIDS. Get tf over it and just accept that you like a show made explicitly for kids. That's what the rest of us do. You'll be much happier the sooner you accept this.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 BUT its not tho. its made by the drama group, it is aimed towards family, the amount of brutal deaths there are in the show is proof of that alone

Just to be pedantic and American for a second, while Django Unchained is a western in terms of genre conventions and aesthetics, it is not set in the wild west, but in the deep south. The question of whether or not slavery should be allowed to expand into the west was one of the main political impasses which led to the American Civil War three years after when Django Unchained takes place.
I don't remember how many scenes series 7A had in the TARDIS but that was my first series and frankly that TARDIS redesign is iconic and most of all SPACIOUS compared to what Eleven had going on before
Absolute madlad to tackle all that and then realise your going to sit through the Jodie saga i couldn’t even make it through half a season I wish you luck your gonna need it.
Series 8 takes its time. I would argue the doctor didn’t finish his post regeneration identity crisis until the end of Series 9. There are a lot of mirrors/reflections in Series 8. From before the first episode, we are seeing the Doctor observing his own reflection from Clara’s eyes. He has to look for how she sees him, to figure out who he is. As he knows Clara is his reflection. Yes it’s slow, yes there are a lot of talking. But isn’t that the whole point of getting Peter Capaldi?
I wish Capaldi had been the Doctor under a better showrunner. His Doctor's character and personality were fantastic but were always bogged down by convoluted or boring plots. When he was given room to shine in Heaven Sent he was incredible.
I mean what was convoluted about Capaldi's plots? It's easy to associate Moffat with convoluted plots but Capaldi's era was so much different from Smith's...
It’s acc the most overrated era of the entire show’s history. I’ve seen so many ppl say that’s it a golden age of Doctor Who and I just think, no. It could’ve been a golden age if Moffat had pulled his head out of his arse and if Clara just, wasn’t there.
@@thetimeshadow6769Clara just wasn’t bad though, I’ve never understood the hate for her. And some of the best storylines in the show were during capaldis run
@@josephhedderman9897 Clara does nothing but overshadow the character who is SUPPOSED to be The Doctor, talks down to him like he’s a misbehaving 5 year old and acts like she is Queen of the World and everyone should listen to her bc of how amazing she thinks she is. That era also had some absolutely horrible storylines. Like Kill The Moon, the one with the trees, the worst ever Dalek story, the Vikings two-parter, and the awful Hell Bent. As good as Heaven Sent is, it doesn’t make up for the rest of it. There are even Chris Chibnall episodes that aren’t as bad as some of those.
@@thetimeshadow6769i mean a lot of the time the doctor is acting like a misbehaving 5 year old one of the things i love about capaldi's doctor is that he's kind of a dick it's funny and makes sense for his take on the character being a nihilistic old man who's just going through the motions of saving people and needs to rediscover why he does what he does
Honestly s9 is my favourite season Edit: I’ve watched DW since eccleston as a kid but as much as I love David I can’t stop just thinking of Peter anytime someone says the doctor
River doesn’t shoot the astronaut because she knows it’s her younger self and obviously doesn’t want to kill herself but still needs to pretend to shoot so Amy and Rory don’t question anything
So I just found your channel (with leeway that I may have spotted a video while browsing) and the near tripling of your subscribers in the production of the video is impressive
Honestly the line “for the love of fuck Clara’s been saved” rewind it 20 times pissing myself laughing! Could listen to this lad review Doctor Who all day! Keep up with it!
I really think River Song could have been one of doctor who's strongest arcs but the fact that series 6 and onwards beat it like a dead horse every episode really killed what could have been from the Library episodes setup
I always wondered why the Dr couldn't just travel back to New York but 1 year later and pick Amy and Rory up. Michelle Gomes killed it as Missy and I wish we got someone as good as the female Dr but with the writing who knows if it would have made a difference. I had no idea that Jon Simm was coming back so I really loved that episode just for thst
@@HOTD108_ Tbf though I can't rlly blame them. The BBC probably thought no-one would even bother tuning in next year after the dumpster fires of Series 8 and 9.
Thanks for doing this. I pretty much agree with your assessments and comments. It was interesting because I thought I loved Moffat’s era the most because he has written the best episodes of Doctor Who but your review shows the limitations of the Moffat era. I am looking forward to your analysis of Chibnall’s era and thank you in advance for putting yourself through it.
Solid video, some really funny observations, and I can't imagine how much time you put into editing this. As for actual tier list, yeah there's a fair bit I disagree with. I can't deny I'm a huge stan for Capaldi, so I'd put half of series 8 one or two places higher than you did. Yeah there's the odd bad episode, but Capaldi & Coleman I think have such good chemistry that they're always great to watch. Series 10 too has some great acting, but I will admit it's probably weaker overall. If there's one episode I think had the most missed potential, it's Knock. David Suchet is a legend, and the idea of a creepy manor house with the wood as a threat is excellent, but the execution botches it. I do completely agree with your views on Mark Gatiss, crazy how much he got to write/act in considering he's pretty bad. Anyway onto the Chibbers era, may God have mercy on your soul. My fondest memory of it is probably Zellin the evil God who intercepts dreams. Everything else... well.
The statement that Peter Capaldi is an amazing doctor let down by bad writing is extremely unfair given the rest of the show. Both showrunners have their equally major flaws, it's just that people weren't willing to accept the pros and the cons of Moffat's writing because it wasn't what they grew up with. It didn't FEEL like Doctor Who because RTD's run was all most viewers at the time had known of the show because most New Who watchers haven't seen any classic Who. I've seen that most of the people that follow this belief are the ones who grew up watching the RTD era during their formative years. I was the exact same case and I really didn't like the Peter Capaldi era during the time it was coming out but that's changed as I've grown up. The thing about the "golden age" of any media is that it's never in the present. We just can't help ourselves from having rose-tinted glasses when thinking about the good things we've experienced in the past. Chances are, it's less the show that's changed over the years and more just YOU that's changed and part of us wishes that we can go back to those times as a kid when we would watch our favorite comfort show where David Tenant would be amazing RTD's writing was amazing
This pretty much lines up though. There's a lot of people denying that this was ever the case (people I assume were kids during the Moffat years and are now young adults), but Series 6 was the clear point in which New Who lost it's way for most people. Series 5 - well liked by pretty much everyone at the time. Series 6? Eh, not great. People were dropping off a bit. Series 7? Well which Series 7? 7a? That was horrible. Nobody paid attention. 7b? Oh no wait nobody paid attention to that either. Sure the 50th was big but Series 8 just as quickly lost everyone again and 9 did nothing to bring it back. I honestly don't recall any general chatter about Series 10 whilst it was on, at all. From anyone, in any part of my life, in any capacity. It's subjective to think something is good or bad, there's no but there. That being said, the Moffat years had 1 series that was super well received and then far too many years of at best mixed reactions, at best. Dunk on the Chibs era all you want, imo that's real "crime" was being bland and of a generally 'on in the background' quality. Sure it didn't reach the highs of Moff's era, but it sure as hell didn't reach it's lows. And no I don't think the Timeless Child is anywhere near as terrible as the worst of Moff's (to the people who hate that it retcons everything about the Doctor, so did Series 1 in 2005 and whilst yes that's actually written well and well produced, you get my point).
@Luna-pk7gz making Clara the reason The Doctor chose thar specific TARDIS, as well as a huge part of his background motivation as shown in Listen, does a hell of a lot to take away the Doctor's agency as a character and individuality. The things that define him are basically tied down to Clara (which doesn't even make sense because the Doctor became the person he is due to Ian and Barbara's influence, but that's a larger problem where Moffat's whole "the doctor is a promise" thing just blatantly conflicts with the original series as a whole). I'd easily argue that Clara's role in the Doctor's backstory is more damaging to his character than saying he was the timeless child, although both ideas suck.
You’re a witty and funny creator and your channel can go places if you keep putting out bangers like this. Best of luck, you’ve a dedicated sub from me 🙂
peter capaldi is my favorite doctor, because he's such a brilliant actor, but the writing let him down a lot. such a shame to waste such an amazing actor on such boring scripts.
34:35 it does make sence since the time vortex effected evolution of the time lords and since river was conceived there she sort of evolved how the time lords did and gained Regenerations
@@HOTD108_ 1. It was a really really good episode. 2. The man put midnight as perfect.... So yeah it definitely deserved to be high on the list if midnight is in perfect.
@@thetimeshadow6769 no just no 🤣😂🤣😂 midnight was absolute dog lol. It's boring, there's no adventure. They're sat in a box talking the whole time while most of them just act silly and panic for no reason. Even if you enjoy it, it's very very far from perfect. Husbands of river song however was an incredibly fun episode, great acting, had river and was very well written.
I have never once in my life seen someone who hates slow mo as much as you do. I didn’t notice it until you mentioned it as a negative for like the seventh time 😂. You really really really do not like slow motion, Shots lol. Great vid.
Ahaha tbf I didn’t realise how much I didn’t like them until editing this video aha, I think they should only be used if needed, in doctor who they’re really out of place 😂only time it worked was in doomsday when rose loses her grip, the slow motion gives the audience time to be shocked and builds suspense, the other times it’s just like “oh this is sad because it’s now slow motion so be sad” it’s just irritating lol
That's because he had a backstory and personality that wasn't entirely centred around the Doctor. RTD's biggest strength was giving all the side characters personality.
Totally agree with you that Matt Smith is total perfection. 2 thumbs up for Tony (Vincent), Suranne, Toby and Michelle too. Plus I dig it that I am not the only one who cringes at all the bad child acting.
I think the main issue in Dark Waters with Clara is that the Doctor should have pushed her to that edge first. He shouldve been more mean with him saying no. Maybe even out of character saying "what value is there in one human life? One that could jeopardize the universe if we bring him back." Kinda like what he did with Bill in the Monks trilogy.
Idk if he's stupid or not, but... when River jumps into the Tardis from that tower... into a POOL... there's no console there, because... umm.... the Tardis is a multi-dimensional vehicle with like millions of rooms inside of it, and phew one of them has a big ass pool... what a coincidence... blud has an attention spam of a 6 years old... I think I have exactly the same opinions as you; it’s hilarious! 😂 I can also tell the point where I started dropping off the show because, while I *think* I stayed until the end of the Moffat era, I don’t remember any of the episodes from Series 9 or 10 at all. I must have just watched them the once and then never bothered with them again (as opposed to RTD’s original era which I’ve rewatched dozens of times).
In The Rings of Akhaten it only seems that the Doctor is the greatest and being in the middle, when actually it shows that however great he might be and however immense his memory could be, a simple symbol of the loss of a loved one (the leaf) contains so much more missed opportunities, that dwarf all his genius. I could relate to that as a son and as a father as well.
Moffat is a good writer as long as its just a few episodes per season like during 10s era but as soon as he has to actually write characters and human interaction it's all just a bit shit
I understand everything in this list except the Capaldi Era. How does Series 8 not have any perfect episodes? Mummy, Flatline and Listen are all perfect for me. Series 9 opener and Under the Lake are easily great. And I will not stand for The Doctor Falls slander. The Series 10 finale is as perfect a finale as Doctor Who has had. About the “too complicated” thing. Why are people so upset that Moffat takes a SCI-Fi show and actually makes it science fiction
Yes!! Was waiting for this, awesome video, pretty much agree with the majority of your rankings, great comedy too Only a few I disagree with, I don’t care much for Christmas Carol, and Asylum of the Daleks was ruined for me when I realised everything about the story would be 10x better if it was about Cybermen, think about it. Even the title “Asylum of the Cybermen” sounds infinitely better Cannot wait for your next one mate
Hearing you say over and over how hard it was for you to follow the storylines as a kid is baffling to me, since as a kid with (at the time) undiagnosed ADHD, I found it harder to follow any plot that WASN'T an overcomplicated hyperactive Moffat spectacle. His era is very much suited to me and people like me I suppose.
Adhd presents very differently for different people, so I'm not sure it's accurate to use your anecdote to say (across the board) whether SM or RTD was preferred by more neurodivergent people. (Anecdotally, among my ND friends, I've seen the opposite, though none of us found SM's plots overcomplicated haha so I agree with you there.) It's great you found something which suits you!
I had the same experience as you, dropped off about the same point! I love a good mind bendy show but lord, this era came off as pursposefully, pretentiously, convulted just for the sake of it. Very "If you don't get it your IQ isn't high enough". I always found enjoyment in being able to piece together bits of the series and theorising on what will happen, when the twists are a surprise but once they are revealed it all falls into place. Moffat doesn't often let that happen because he has to be the biggest brain and pull some random "actually" 🤓☝ I really have enjoyed your tier lists, and have the next one queued - although I never watched any of the Chibnall era. Your pacing is great, and love that you love Peep Show, top tier series. You should tier list those if you feel up to it!
For some reason, I both simultaneously hated and loved Steven Moffat's era of Doctor Who. It definitely had to do with the highs since I would rewatch the "good" episodes from this specific era whenever I wanted to watch something comforting. I distinctly remember series 7 being such a slog to go through in comparison to the previous seasons, and it all went downhill from there. But nevertheless, maybe it is just nostalgia since I started watching Doctor Who during the Capaldi era, but this era of Doctor Who is still my favorite (excluding Classic Who). Though, that has a lot to do with Matt Smith's performance as the Doctor, as well as Peter Capaldi's; and Amy and Rory being my favorite companions from the revival series. This video really did show how the series started to fall off the longer it went on, and I agreed with most of the evaluations of these episodes.
34:40 time lord is not a species the ability to regenerate and stuff (before the retcon) came from exposure to the time vortex. That is why river is a time lord.
been waiting for this, love it, both entertaining and thoughtful. I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of assessment of positives and negatives of Moffat's writing and especially the part about sexy women not being the same as strong or well written women...some of his writing of women was very yikes esp earlier, I do think he did get better in that regard. I have capaldi era higher although I agree that there was some duds and it did generally seem the show was on the decline at that point I remember i stopped watching around series 7. I prefer the characterisation of capaldi's doctor to smiths and the dynamic between him and companions...written completely differently with none of the yikesy sexual stuff, I presume in large part because of the age difference between smith and capaldi. I do love river although its true her character got progressively more one note I think alex kingston did an amazing job in providing some depth despite that.
VINDICATED AGAIN! Empress of Mars and Eaters of Light were such black holes for me. I thought it was my ADHD brain not doing enough to pay attention but even my last watch didn't help. I stopped blaming myself, tried making a post for other people who might like them to gush over it, help me see the good in it, didn't quite work. A couple of other Who reviewers had similar sentiment and to shed that guilt just felt so great. But for the record the insufferableness of Clara is the point. Detached and unhinged after Danny's death, leading to that downfall.
This is the tiniest nitpick, but every time River says "doctor. We get that word from you, you know" in good man goes to war, I have to pause and consider the etymology of the word 'doctor' and it takes me right out of the episode
I genuinely don't think the angels moving in flesh and stone ruined them, take into account that the angel's we're reforming at that time, so when they move, it's not what they typically look like.
The Girl Who Died. That face appearing through the clouds was straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I literally laughed out loud
River doesn't MISS the astronaut, it just had no effect on them.
That makes sense too, because when River analyses the suit I think she mentions it's designed with life support, so it makes sense it'd be bulletproof
She says so Amy in the finale that she knew what the astronaut was and pretended she didn't
Yeah he's got a lot of opinions in this that are based on him misreading the events
She missed on purpose. She knew it was her in there
@PsyrenXY She doesn't. He explicitly says that she won't remember this, and that she is serving time for a murder she doesn't remember.

@@tortoiseoflegends4466its not targeting kids its for everyone
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 BUT its not tho. its made by the drama group, it is aimed towards family, the amount of brutal deaths there are in the show is proof of that alone
@@HOTD108_ but its not tho, you can find interviews of people who have worked on the show and have made it what it is state its not a kids show and that its made by the drama group of the BBC
@@thetimeshadow6769i mean a lot of the time the doctor is acting like a misbehaving 5 year old one of the things i love about capaldi's doctor is that he's kind of a dick it's funny and makes sense for his take on the character being a nihilistic old man who's just going through the motions of saving people and needs to rediscover why he does what he does
Honestly s9 is my favourite season
Edit: I’ve watched DW since eccleston as a kid but as much as I love David I can’t stop just thinking of Peter anytime someone says the doctor
River doesn’t shoot the astronaut because she knows it’s her younger self and obviously doesn’t want to kill herself but still needs to pretend to shoot so Amy and Rory don’t question anything
So I just found your channel (with leeway that I may have spotted a video while browsing) and the near tripling of your subscribers in the production of the video is impressive
aha thank you! I appreciate you subscribing!! :D
Honestly the line “for the love of fuck Clara’s been saved” rewind it 20 times pissing myself laughing!
Could listen to this lad review Doctor Who all day! Keep up with it!
Ahah I don’t even remember saying this line 😂 but thank you 😂
10 minutes in and already this video is worth the wait. Been waiting all day to finally be able to watch this!
I really think River Song could have been one of doctor who's strongest arcs but the fact that series 6 and onwards beat it like a dead horse every episode really killed what could have been from the Library episodes setup
Is a strong story arc.
Actually the power of three ending wasn’t good because the actor who played the villan was hard to work with
I always wondered why the Dr couldn't just travel back to New York but 1 year later and pick Amy and Rory up. Michelle Gomes killed it as Missy and I wish we got someone as good as the female Dr but with the writing who knows if it would have made a difference. I had no idea that Jon Simm was coming back so I really loved that episode just for thst
Unfortunately, most fans had the John Simm reveal ruined because the BBC literally put him in the trailer several months before the series even began.
@@HOTD108_ Tbf though I can't rlly blame them. The BBC probably thought no-one would even bother tuning in next year after the dumpster fires of Series 8 and 9.
I love the pace - swift talking. 👍Not boring!
Glad you enjoyed! Thank You!
I’m really looking forward to your take on the chibnall Jodie era. Personally I could not sit thru most of it. It was painful.
This was so good! Now the wait for the roasting of chibbers.
So excited to watch! I've been waiting for this one
Hope you enjoyed! :D
Everything else... well.
YES! ive waited for so long for this!!
Been looking forward to this!🙌
lake/flood hate should be illegal tbh

How does he nail the music every time?!?
Also i really like your vids
ikr he is so funny
I am hyped for part 3!!!
And no I don't think the Timeless Child is anywhere near as terrible as the worst of Moff's (to the people who hate that it retcons everything about the Doctor, so did Series 1 in 2005 and whilst yes that's actually written well and well produced, you get my point).
timeless child is the worst thing in the history of the series.. just no
@@Luna-pk7gzI’d argue Clara showing the Doctor which TARDIS to take is worse by a landslide.
@idle_speculation no it isn't. It doesn't damage the doctor as a character and doesn't destroy gallifrey again. You are objectively wrong
Best of luck, you’ve a dedicated sub from me 🙂
Thank you! Will do!
peter capaldi is my favorite doctor, because he's such a brilliant actor, but the writing let him down a lot. such a shame to waste such an amazing actor on such boring scripts.
No, his stories are so great.
34:35 it does make sence since the time vortex effected evolution of the time lords and since river was conceived there she sort of evolved how the time lords did and gained Regenerations

The wait for my favorite era of Doctor Who ranking payed off! 💙💙

It's boring, there's no adventure. They're sat in a box talking the whole time while most of them just act silly and panic for no reason.
Even if you enjoy it, it's very very far from perfect.
Husbands of river song however was an incredibly fun episode, great acting, had river and was very well written.
If moffat was only allowed to write with both hands he'd be one of the best
Nah. You’re wrong about The Doctor Falls
Captain Jack is the OG River Song, written so much better
That's because he had a backstory and personality that wasn't entirely centred around the Doctor. RTD's biggest strength was giving all the side characters personality.
No really, Jack is just a copy of the Tenth Doctor.
@@lm86531River Song is a better female Doctor.
For the first half I agreed with you but then you shit on some very good Capaldi episodes and I lost it.
(also even in 10's era he did have a clear formula, which is fine, but imo got a tiny bit predictable)
You remember Chibnall?
Chibnell rankings next 💀💀💀
I understand everything in this list except the Capaldi Era. How does Series 8 not have any perfect episodes? Mummy, Flatline and Listen are all perfect for me. Series 9 opener and Under the Lake are easily great. And I will not stand for The Doctor Falls slander. The Series 10 finale is as perfect a finale as Doctor Who has had.
About the “too complicated” thing. Why are people so upset that Moffat takes a SCI-Fi show and actually makes it science fiction
Thank you, for reminding me that I dont remember a single second of series 7 😌

Only a few I disagree with, I don’t care much for Christmas Carol, and Asylum of the Daleks was ruined for me when I realised everything about the story would be 10x better if it was about Cybermen, think about it. Even the title “Asylum of the Cybermen” sounds infinitely better
Cannot wait for your next one mate

Moffat doesn't often let that happen because he has to be the biggest brain and pull some random "actually" 🤓☝
I really have enjoyed your tier lists, and have the next one queued - although I never watched any of the Chibnall era.

I love so much than my favourite episodes get absolutely bullied
Yeah I know that pain, just a sad reality of not everyone having the same opinions, in all areas of life and any interests.

1:08:00 Theater, local theater showed it. 3D
I personally loved Christmas 2015 it was amazing
That's Fair :D
