Alba Armengou is so soulful, simple, so rooted. Her performances resonate for me because she doesn't attempt to modernize her style or be self-consciously "contemporary". She's pure. There's no rock, no hip hop, no blues stylings grafted on. No hybridity, just the material. When she sings I feel like I could be listening to someone singing a century ago. I love the amazing Billie Holiday quality to her voice--and, in my view, she's a vastly superior singer, which is saying a lot! The queen of bossa/samba. But I love her in a big band, too. And her bop chops on trumpet aren't bad, either!
I wholeheartedly agree. Watching this performance, her trumpet playing in “Yesterday”, and vocals in “No Moon at all” , “Embraceable You” or “Dança de Solidao”, I think Alba Armengou’s repertoire and musical skills are extraordinary..
In my observation Alba's singing style always had some very exciting and interesting elements, which were gradually coming together. By the time she was 13 it was already clear to me that she's going to be a great singer. And it happened so quickly! When she was 15 her expressing power was already taking my breath away. When she sings, she uses her skills so naturally, just like a bird uses her wings when flying freely and happily. And I agree: she doesn't use (doesn't have to) any "forced styles" or techniques, instead her singing is always 100% devoted to the expression of human feelings and emotions. And not only for the whole song or a longer tune, but even for a single note! She can sing a single note, and already that one can express some beautiful and soulful thing perfectly! I discovered this when she was scaling down at the end of the song Aguas de marco at 13 together with Rita Payes. How many singers (even opera singers!) can you name who's scaling is enjoyable?!? LOL. Extraordinary! But how and from where this was coming? I've got a clue only lately, when she was singing a little part of the Yardbird Suite to her own cat (find it on her facebook page!), who was also obviously enjoying it! :-))) From scientific point of view (I'm a physicist) the cats are communicating with each other via modulating the carrier frequency of their miaowing. This is similar to the vibrato/tremolo of the opera singing, EXCEPT, it doesn't sound "artificial", "mechanic", or a life-less technical skill. No, Alba's miaowing is full of life, unique and expresses the emotions perfectly - proven by her own cat! :-)))) facebook.com/watch/?v=1565858106917314

This is one of my favorites. I once heard a beautiful young woman at the beach in Leblon sing this song...as the sun was disappearing over Guanabara Bay...she was accompanied by a group of young musicians from the Favelas. That night I also sang and played a nice bamboo flute I had purchased in Ipanema. The following day I was to return to the US after two weeks in Brasil on business. That evening I sat at the beach with a strong desire to stay in Rio de Janeiro, forever. Brasil is truly a land of joy, music, romance, warm and beautiful people. I have many friends there. My other favorite city is the marvelous Barcelona. Next time there I hope to visit the Sant Andreu Academy.
Beautiful all around, but I have to say, Alba has such an enchanting voice. Her open vowels, the clarity of her enunciation, her tonality, her really smooth delivery. I enjoy her presentation as much as I do that of Miss Motis! She's grown so much since her "Triste" days! Elia is new to me, but they harmonized well together! The younger Miss Motis' musicianship is so simple and sweet, and I'm always impressed to see her in the mix. And, of course, your joy, Mr. Chamarro, is evident every time you play. Maybe someday I'll be half the instrumentalist that you are. You obviously have found your calling in bringing up this new generation of real musicians. Blessings to you and yours!
Wow that is a delightful tune. Heavenly harmony just beautiful and the complementary low notes of Joan very nice. Guitar beautifully done Carla. The poise and talent of these young ladies is admirable. Nice to see Alba and Elia together, thanks to both of you.
