  • The 1970s saw the emergence of a stupendous quantity of brilliant Reggae Icons. From that esteemed generation came Trenchtown boy Ijahman Levi. A childhood friend of the Wailers and alumnus of the Joe Higgs unofficial School of music.
He was headed for early success but had his trajectory deviated by a move to England and prison sentence that changed his life forever.

I've been to a view shows of him in Holland. But the very first show is still very special to me. I was in front off the stage and his song: Bob and friends started and it gave me a rush! He stoped the band from playing and pulling me on stage. Yeah mon, their i stand and i started to dancing with the legandary Ijahman Levi! BLESS HIM! 🖤💚💛❤🙏

I discovered Ijahman in the early 80s listening to songs Carry Jah Heavy Load (Heavy Lord in some publications) and Are We A Warrior. (can't remember which I caught onto first) I was immediately drawn in..That sound was different from the Rick-a Tick, Rack-a-Tack sound associated with Deep Roots Reggae of the times and had a very Strong Classical and Symphonic edge to the music One radio broadcaster hosting a weekly program in my country labelled his sound as NEW AGE MUSIC. Quite appropriate I should think😊😊. I was amazed and incredulous.... Trevor Sutherland aka Ijahman is a Great singer/composer and a VERY UNDERATED lead guitarist ..

Yes indeed. I recall reading Ijahman's bio years ago which cited the singer as " having influenced scores of later generation Reggae artists...."..And certainly Don Carlos was one of them and eventually singers like Micheal Rose ex- Black Uhuru, Junior Reid and others...And to a certain extent, the entire Waterhouse crew: From Black Uhuru to the late Lacksley Castell....

I bumped into Ijah man in Europe many years ago. He was a very small man and had two very tall bodyguards ( ?) With him. He asked me where he could buy some weed. I gave him directions and he was off. Love love his musics. Mystical hymns

Can you clarify something for me? I bought an album back in the 70’s on the Pama label. It was an Album titled ‘Straighten up’, can’t remember what volume in the series it was but it was a compilation of albums produced in direct reply to Trojan’s ‘Tighten Up’ compilations. One of those tracks was ‘Fire, Fire’ recorded by a young artist under the name ‘The Youth’. I have read on various blogs that it was this legend that recorded that track. Can you throw any light on that for me? Thanks.

Some of my favourite words ever are from 'I'm a Levi'
'It is better for a man to conquer himself, than a king to conquer and capture many cities '.
These words have been printed, framed and hang on my wall where I can see them every day. Having experienced mental health problems for many years and known several people who have overcome addictions to drink or drugs,I can totally relate to them.
