Steam Powered Machine Shop 78: Front Shop
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- This video is #78 in a series in my shop that I put together to depict a small "job" machine shop of 1925 vintage running on steam power. Probably the only working machine shop under steam power in North America. This episode deals with some of the work backlog of modern engine cylinder heads, etc. Work on the 1910 Liley steam engine will resume next video. All questions and comments about steam power and machine work are always welcome here. See my community tab page for shop news, Thanks for watching......Dave
What an excellent video, Dave. That was most certainly 47 minutes well spent for me. Most enjoyable.
Great to see you're back at it ! You've got some fantastic old machines , no doubt the envy of many home - shop machinists . I love your long format episodes , you pack a lot of very useful information into them . . . THANKS ! Although there is so much WORK involved , you make it look FUN 😉 !
Variety IS the SPICE OF LIFE , & we certainly do get a variety here ! ! ! Welcome back !
Thanks George, That one was a lot of editing. There were 77 separate edited clips in it......Dave
Glad to hear from you. I was worried about you because I haven’t heard from you in a while I hope you are doing well. Miss your channel
In case you haven't heard it today, You do damn nice work! Great job.
Today, 7/8/2022 I watched this video because I follow Pete's "Just a Few Acres Farm" and he talked about you when he took the head from his vintage tractor to you. Another shop he had been using for years really botched the work they had done on it causing it to fail and he no longer trusted them so he turned to you wanting a high quality job. After watching you work I can see why he has put his faith in you. I hit the like button and am a new subscriber.
Enjoyed the video , Pete from " Just A Few Acres Farm " recommened your channel and am very glad that he did . Thank You
Nice one Dave . I did not realise you did so much automotive machining on the other side . The valve seat grinding is something i have not done in about 25 years ! 👍
Well...it's not like you don't have enough other stuff to do.....Dave
Weolcome back , Dave. You're looking well. I am waiting to see more :"fun stuff" this year. I laughed at the scolding about looking out the window.
Nice to see you back, Dave.
Very pleasant "working" alongside you sir. Enjoyable video thank you
Pete sent me here. Now I have a lot more interesting videos to watch. So happy I subscribed, thanks Dave.
Pete from just a few acres recommended your channel. Enjoyed the video.
Great video thank you for the interesting content. Just a few acres suggested checking your channel. I wonder if you have ever seen Fred Dibnah in England with his steam engines and work shop. He is a most interesting man and very entertaining. There is quite a lot on youtube about his work. and life.
Hi ! Came over and subscribed from shout out from Pete at "Just a few Acres Farm".
Came over from Pete at Just a Few Acres. Glad to find an old school shop that takes the time to do it right. Thanks for sharing

Welcome back. Based on your work to date I would guess you have been back here in NY for five or six weeks. Good to see you in your Steam shop again.
You have been staying busy in the shop! I too prefer to grind valves.
I found you through Just a Few Acres!
Thanks so much for sharing Dave. would love to see more work from this side of the shop!
Yea! Dave is back.
Here because of Pete from Just a Few Acres, cheers
Hey hey hey It is Dave!!!!!! Hey old man, like me😂 how you been ? Nice to see a up load!!!
Thanks for another great video Dave! I have watched everyone of your videos from the beginning and have learned so much so thankyou! I was never an apprentice but I feel like your apprentice every time I watch your videos!
When do we get to see the small engine power the D.C. Dynamo???
Good to see you again Dave!
Loved the machining clips!
Excellent video, Dave. Thanks
I'm hear from " just a few acres Farm " Pete and Hilarys UA-cam channel . and now subscribed .
One of the most interesting and varied machining videos i;ve seen ikn a long time. Your approach to the steam valve box is almost identical to a problem Keith Rucker has with a steam powered locomotive stoker. He would really benefit from your help.
Hey Dave, Pete from "Just A Few Acres Farm " sent us, speaks very highly of you and your knowledge of the machinery you work on, looking forward to your teaching, Great Posting
Hi Dave, I’ve watched all your vidoes, would like to visit. Thanks
Found you through Just a Few Acres Farm. Love older machine shops. Have a couple lathes and a mill myself for personal use. Enjoy what I have watched so far. You have a new subscriber! Thank you for the interesting content.
I heard about you on A Few Acres Farm. I hope you do a video documenting the machining on Pete's MD head. I'm watching your videos from day one. Love line shaft powered machines. Cheers.
I just watched Pete at Just A Few Acres Farm explain how He brought the head from His Farmall MD for you to work on. wonderfull
Been missing you ! Love every thing dose not always have to be steam . Need more people like you. that can do stuff with out automation.
Looking good old man, this winter seems to have agreed with you a little better!
I thought maybe K Ruckers stoker engine might have made it to your list of things to do! Lol!!
Hi Dave Happy to see you doing well. I am looking forward to more videos. thanks
It's always a good day when my favorite youtuber posts a video, thanks for sharing, David.
Pete from "Just a Few Acres Farm" sent me over from his channel. My son is a machinist.
Great stuff as always Dave!
was that cub cadet yellow? thank YOU for YOUR time creating these videos!
Actually it was Gravely
Welcome back David, 'hope you are in good health. News about the EBT and its 1900 workshops on your community page is fantastic, it would be such a shame if it were allowed to be scrapped. In years to come the EBT will be the jewel in the railfans world. Pardon me for hijacking your comment section but its also extremely good news about the successful six year restoration of Reading & Northern's 4-8-4 T-1 2102 and dare I also mention the C & O's 1309 on the Western Maryland. Looking forward very much to more work on the Liley. Colin from the UK.
Hello Dave glad to see you 😊
Welcome back. We've missed you.
REALLY GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK IN YOUR NEW YORK STATE PLANT.
This was kind of special, always enjoy the "Old Steam Powered Machine Shop" but this was great.thanks for showing us the front shop. Looking forward to the next season under steam.

Welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends.
Have fun and stay healthy.
Man that was a special treat, who would have suspected you’re also a brilliant, real world, practical machinist, not just a historical steam machinist, all of us - very very good content.
Great to see you're back!
As a loyal follower and subscriber of all of your episodes I am thrilled to see you're back at it!
I saved every episode from the beginning as a great resource of knowledge and expertise of your craft! This is second to none in my humble opinion!
Greetings my friend from Calgary Canada!
Hi Dave, great to see you back, loved every bit of the video. It was great to see the "front shop" and all the other machining you do, thanks for the video and keep them coming.

Great stuff Dave keep it coming we really appreciate it
As always, I love watching your work!
It's always a joy to watch your videos, Dave. I really appreciate your concept of teaching while you show. That's how I like to learn things.
Pete Mentioned Ya & came over
Nice to see all that Kwik Way gear still cranking out jobs. Quality work is never obsolete. I used a lot of the same when I worked in a machine shop right out of high school. We had that same boring bar, but with a roll over block fixture, along with a Sunnen CK-10 for honing. Started with Kwik Way valve grinding but then went to Sioux, but I modified the Kwik Way pilot puller and stone dresser to work with the Sioux stuff as I liked them. We had a Kwik Way 860 surface grinder for doing heads and blocks. Was a great arm workout to lift BB Chevy and Iron Chrysler Hemis heads into that thing.
How do you locate the valve seat on the valve? I always used a set of small dividers set to where I wanted the seat to land on the valve as a gauge for grinding the seats. You might want to hit the seats with Dykem or marking pen before that last kiss with the 45 so it shows on the video better.
Please let us see what you´re doing at the cylinderhead from the old farmall M from "Pete" an his youtube-chanell "just a few acres of farm" !
I will do that....Dave
Good to see you back !!! Loved the variety pack of work this time. Full steam ahead!! Looking forward to the next one. my own restored machines are getting back to work here too.
interesting projects there!
Glad to see you’re back in the shop, making videos. I was worried you didn’t make it through winter.
Thanks Dave, especially liked your explanation on 3 angle valve seats,I never knew how these seats were ground or cut, thanks for your attention to detail not many like you with your knowledge are willing to share it with complete straingers, hope are paths cross someday🤗😎🤗😎
So awesome ! No joke !
David, Thank you for your update. i was worried that something might have gone wrong. Great to see you again. Jim in Tacoma up to his neck working on old machines.
Really glad you are back Dave, always look forward to seeing the solutions you come up with to get the job done.
Nice video work - I joined as a result of mention on Just A Few Acres Farm.
Thanks Mike, glad to have you along.....Dave
Great video Dave , good to see the money making part of the shop.
Both you and your machines are amazing.
Welcome back.
I do like the steam shop, but this modern yet old school engine work was very interesting. Thanks
Hello David good to see you back thank you for the look at the front shop I had no idea you did engine work also the fine workmanship you put into it look forward to your next post
Really good to see both sides of the shop in operation. Thanks for sharing.
Very educational and entertaining.....Thanks for sharing
I can't help hoping some local young person comes along and wants to apprentice with you. Who else knows all the stuff you know? Even if everyone goes electric for day-to-day transportation over the next few decades, there are going to be (or should be) many people trying to keep a few of these old engines going just for fun and historical preservation. How will they do it without an old-fashioned machine shop?
My favorite channel is back.
Great to have you back making chips. Interesting video. Thanks
Thaks Dave for showing the front shop . That was really interesting to see some engine machine work . I like to see some of cylinder boring jobs you do . I think the v-8 type engines have a special machine for them
Really appreciate the great work you do! Showing us all of the tricks of the world you live in! Thanks, keep up the great work.
I love the video, I am a huge Kohler engine fan, I enjoyed seeing that 12hp. I have a 14 Hp that needs to be decked :(
Many Thanks from a very cool/cold Scotland, Love the Vid's , from 81 year old Ex Marine Engineer, keeps the gray cells ticking.
👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Enjoyed! Wow......you are craftsman/perfectionist/artisan in the machine shop of days gone bye 👍 Sure hope you have sons/daughters/grandsons/granddaughters to pass all this knowledge and equipment off to! Thanks for sharing and say hello to Pete when he stops bye to pickup the Farmall head.
So glad to see this latest video, Dave. I really missed seeing you at work these last 3 months, and all the work you did in the front shop was as interesting as what you also do on steam. Always a great treat to see your work.
Must be spring, Dave's back in NY! (Welcome back, very glad to see you!)
Awesome!!
Hello David! Glad to see You again, glad to see You all right, God bless you!
Hey Dave,
Great to see you again.
I spent the first 15 years of my work life as a machinist. 5 of that as a union "grinder specialist". So a lot of cylindrical work, I.D ,O.D. and form grinding along with flat work.
Other than that, several job shops running everything.
I have a couple of questions,if you don't mind.
1) Who is the manufacturer of the grinder? I've run Blanchard grinders, but they all had rotary tables.
2) What grade of wheel do you use for the valve seats?
I'm guessing somewhere around a 100 grit, K hardness?
3) Is the precision level, .0001" per 10 in.?
4) Would you hire an old man?
Lol, thanks for bringing us along!
Hello Dave. I just started watching your channel on the recommendation from Pete at Just a Few Acres Farm and I'm glad I did (I'm now subscribed). Thank you for producing these great videos.
I always wondered how a Kwik-way boring bar worked....
You are the best, love watching your channel.
Would love to visit sometime if I ever stop working!
From Va.
Hi Dave, great work. Is that Michael Wallers son playing the theme tune? it sure sounds like his work. cheers.

Made me laugh.
