    I love my country.
I don't love my country because we have great military power. As Yoda said, "Wars don't make one great".
I don't love my country because the mere sight of the flag chokes me up. It's a piece of cloth. It's a symbol. Without context, that's all it is.
I don't love my country because of my political affiliation. I am not a registered member of either party.
I love my country, because time and time again, our greatest triumphs as a people, come on the heels of our greatest tragedies, failures, setbacks, and moments of embarrassment.
We are a nation of Greater Fools. We are the people who bet on ourselves when any rational person would fold or compromise. We are relentlessly, maddeningly, unapologetically optimistic.
I love my country. And that's why.

You gotta understand the nuance of the President calling for a press conference that late at night. It's extremely rare, and is either something amazing or something terrible. @@kabirconsiders Exactly. The U.S and the U.K have a very special relationship. Despite all the divides and differences in opinions we have always had each other’s backs. We established diplomatic relations in 1785, only 2 years after Great Britain recognized the U.S as our own country in 1783. Yes there’s been dark times like the war of 1812 but we’ve always recovered relations with one another. We are each other’s closest allies. When something serious affects one country it also affects the other. We’ve fought together brother by brother in many wars like both world wars despite the U.S late entry we supported the U.K with food and weapons. We made NATO together. We’ve fought together during the Korean war, and Afghanistan, and still to this day when it comes to global problems we consult one another. Our countries are very important to each other and we share a lot like a common langue even though it’s spoken a bit differently we’re still both English predominant speaking counties, we share media, and trade. Our countries are very alike and our friendship will most likely be eternal.

During passing time between classes the halls were completely silent. All we did that day was watch the news. I saw the second plane hit live on the news. The way America came together after 9/11 and looked out for each other and were so patriotic. Religion, political stance, gender, LBGTQ+, ethnicity did NOT matter. I miss those days I hope we can come together again like that. God Bless America.

Growing up in America post 9/11 was crazy, especially in school. I remember how scary it was when our teachers told us that there were terrorists out there that would kill you for no apparent reason, and you seemingly can't traditionally fight them. Schools in the US usually have a moment of silence every year on 9/11, and the day is pretty somber. Elementary schools usually focus on educating the younger kids on what happened while watching videos on it. American kids also have to start learning about school shootings and participate in drills to know what to do in case of a school shooter, which was eerie because at the same time we were told that if your school gets shot up it's most likely going through be one of your own peers. Have you ever seen American PSAs on School Shooters? Pretty crazy that it's such an issue in our country while Europe and other countries don't have the same issue or at least as bad

Presidential news conferences happen quite a bit. Ad-hoc or conferences not pre-announced are rare indeed. As an American and a life long NY Met fan I remember feeling pride, but also feeling saddened and very angry all over again. Just watching this I still feel that anger and sorrow for all of those lives lost. Yet, we can all look back on a time when this country felt and acted in concert. One great nation, indivisible. THAT part breaks my heart.

I’ve watched this ESPN piece before, but it was a really interesting watch from your perspective. I love that it was the Mets playing that night; in the first games back after the attacks, then-catcher Mike Piazza hit a home run, and for the first time in weeks, New York had something to cheer about. I was a junior in college living six blocks from the White House on 9/11. I saw the Pentagon burning from the rooftop of my apartment building. There was a mad rush to get the hell out of the city, and afterwards, I’d never heard DC quiet like that before, and probably never will again. It was just this eerie, weighted silence. The next week, there were military personnel on every street corner. My now-wife and I had just left the DC metro area literally the day before the raid, and she woke me up to watch the announcement. Had we been there, we would have gone to the White House to celebrate. It was a sense of disbelief, joy, finality, and a prayer that perhaps the families of the 9/11 victims not only found some sort of vindication or peace or whatever they needed, and knew we’d never forgotten them. Very cool video. Thanks.

In times like these, I love how people pull together.
On 9/11, my parent's neighbor was touring France and was in Paris that day with her friend. Americans in France aren't always the easiest of tourist type relationships. But as she and her friend were waiting for their tour group, passers-by realized from their jovial behavior that they knew nothing of what had just transpired at home. The French people around them told them to call home immediately to hear the news from family. Afterwards they were able to share concerns and fears with one another. As flights were grounded and reopening airports was a nightmare, the women, like many other Americans were stranded there in France, but were taken in for several days by complete strangers, until they were able to secure passage home.
Why can't we find some of that compassion now from our own people at home?

Where 9/11 was the modern era's version of Pearl Harbor, May 1, 2011 was the equivalent to the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game, the US vs USSR, in terms of the unity of national emotion throughout the country.

I live in New Jersey. Im only about 2 hours or so away from NYC. When the shit went down, my 9 year old self saw people rushing out of town/state because they had family in New York and needed to be with them, or sadly sometimes, needed to bury them. And i saw just as many people rushing in. Because no one really knew what was going to happen next. And some people in New York had family here, and needed to be somewhere "not as important," for a while. I was 9. And as much as the adults didnt like to admit it, my age group understood death. We understood that people can hate, and hate hard. We may not have understood the machinations and history that bred this hate. But we could understand the cause and effect of extreme hatred and mass murder. It was scary, not because we didnt known what was happening, but because we understood the chilling nature of what happened, and looking to the adults for assurance, they clearly werent entirely sure what was going to happen. And because we were so close, we understood how quickly it could spread to us if something bigger happened.
I was 18 when bin Laden was gunned down. I was in my senior year, and summer was coming. Id be leaving my hometown for college in a few months, and id sort of figured myself out. I do not like to cheer or celebrate the death of anyone. No matter how evil. By that point in my life, i knew this about myself. I could be happy the evil they did was gone, and be hopeful for the future. But id never celebrate the death itself. It just felt wrong to me. Bin Laden was the exception. Not that i think what he did makes him significantly more evil than any other human who's done evil. And not that he, alone, committed all these acts. His comrades, his legacy, and his machinations would still exist, even if his own evil contributions died eith him. But after almost 10 years of living with the effects of 9/11, im not ashamed to say i broke my own rule. I celebrated. I cried tears of relief. I toasted to justice and the wellbeing of the team that took him down.
Im not particularly aggressive or overly outspoken in my patriotism. Im proud of my country, despite her many flaws, but im very cognizant of those flaws, and chsnnel my efforts and zeal into betterment, rather than screaming about how American i am. But i was unabashedly screaming into the chorus of "God Bless America," "Im Proud to be an American," "U S A," and many other songs and chants. It was a bizarre day. But its a day I'll never forget.

I was in high school when 9/11 happened. I don't remember when it was between my 1st period and 2nd period class, or my 2nd and 3rd. But, I do know it was Spanish. When I walked into the room, the teacher already had the TV turned on to the news, showing the first plane hitting the tower. That was pretty much all we did that day was watch the coverage and discuss what was happening. I also remember, throughout the day, periodically hearing military planes or helicopters flying over the school.

So many images from that day ingrained in my memory. It's so weird when something is happening and you tell yourself "I'll remember this exact moment forever" and 20 years later it's still there like yesterday. The day of 9/11 is by far that biggest moment for me.

Another 9/11 video that is ABSOLUTELY incredible is, 'Boatlift - An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience.'
It is very respectful, not gory or anything like that and sheds light on such a incredible event that happened, that most people don't know about. Even Americans! I didn't know about it until like 2 or 3 years ago. It's a beautifully told story of resiliency, unity, selflessness, humanity, tragedy and strength.

Another fascinating thing about that night is that the previous evening President Obama attended the annual White House Correspondents Dinner. It’s an annual event for charity where a comedian roasts the press and the president and then the president has his turn to roast the press all in good natured fun.
As this dinner took place Seal Team Six was already on their way to Abbottabad, Pakistan to perform their mission. Obama obviously knew what was to take place the next day but you could not tell from his demeanor.
During comedian host Seth Meyer’s set he had made fun of Donald Trump who was in the audience. Then, in Obama’s set he mentioned Trump as well. Trump wasn’t so much a political figure at that time as he was a thorn in Obama’s side with crazy accusations about his birth certificate and such, though he was threatening to run for the office as he had previously done. Obama sarcastically stated that he was impressed by the important life altering decisions that Trump had to make on Celebrity Apprentice and that if he had to make decisions like that he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
All the while the initial stages of this monumental event as going down.
After the dinner, Obama returned to the White House and the situation room where final decisions were made to carry on with the plans to implement the raid that successfully killed Enemy #1.

I remember those days so vividly. The morning of 9/11 will be forever ingrained into my memory. The week had already started off like shite, and that made a hard week already harder.
Fast forward ten years - I am living in Italy with my wife and our Daughter. I woke up early AM the next day and opened up the news as I always do. Every single news outlet had been reporting his death.
We got him. We finally got the son of a bitch!
Now lets fast forward another 10 years. I am a contractor for the US Military. A co-worker and friend is also a USN Vet, such as myself were talking on a drive. The subject came up of which ships he was on. He told me that he was on the Aircraft Carrier that the SEAL Team took the body to. He said at the beginning, nobody knew what was going on. Logs were pulled. Email was shutoff, as well as ship to shore phones. It was only later that they were told of what happened. D said the energy on the ship was like nothing he had felt in the almost 12+ years he had been in the fleet.
We finally came back together as a nation that evening. I really wish that momentum would have continued. But I damn sure don't ever want something like that to happen again to create unity.
