Most importantly the horn is incredible to play! The real innovation is in the design work by Tomoji Hirakata that you can't see. We set a goal of making the world's best playing alto saxophone. I was playing on a 58000 Mark 6 and very happy. It was one I picked after trying 10-12 Selmer Mark 6's over a few years. Yamaha's have always been well made excellent horns, but many people including me felt the Yamaha was just a tick below a good Mark 6. No more. OMG this horn sounds AMAZING! Once we achieved our goal we were so excited Tomoji decided the horn should look as beautiful as it plays. I am lucky but, people who purchase Yamaha saxophones will also be lucky because the new alto saxophones will have many innovative sonic enhancements created on them.
Vincent, I seem to remember back when I was working in and you played at Sweet Rhythm didn't you play a Yanigasawa? This horn also looks like you took some decorative elements from the Vito sax that Johnny Hodges played until his death, as well as King Super 20's. Gorgeous horn
Background In 2005 I had a chance to overhaul one of the most beautiful saxophones I have ever seen-the VITO 5000. The late Frank Wess told me that the saxophone is one of only two of this type Vito produced. This saxophone was specially made for Johnny Hodges, who was the legendary solo alto player in Duke Ellington’s big band. Mr. Hodges' special horn was fully engraved and incorporated several unique features, including his name on the bell, flying bumblebees and the octave key on the neck portrayed as a “Snake” with diamonds on its eyes! It has been my dream to make one like it ever since-an instrument that tells a story, shows respect, and a love of music and craftsmanship. Special thanks to Mr. Craig Anderson / Allied supply Co. who provided me the original mother of pearl from old King Zephyr/Super 20!! My personal goal is to make an extraordinary saxophone using techniques that most manufacturers have either long-forgotten or eliminated because they are too expensive or labor-intensive to do, such as artistic hand engraving, and installing ‘mother of pearl” inlays on the palm and side keys, to name a few. I acknowledge that my engraving/designs are terrible. I'm not a trained engraver nor an artist, but I do think I have improved since I began this project. I am so grateful that I have received very positive feedback from Mr. Herring. Hope it does meet his expectations as a musical voice... Thank you for watching this video.
I think you did a great job on the engraving! Give yourself some much-deserved credit. I especially like that you chose rose-cut fill, as it definitely catches the light properly. I would love for you to make me a dragon octave key someday. (flickr.com/saxgraver is me btw)
@@JaiceSingerDuMars Hats off to your GREAT engraving work. I actually knew you for long time and heard a lot about your amazing work. I didn't recognize when I first responded...my bad. Anyway, so glad to finally connected with you. would be inn touch!! Happy 4th:-)
This is the most beautiful modern saxophone I have ever seen, it's stunning. I enjoyed the references to the King Super 20 and the Conn Virtuoso Deluxe, with a nice Johnny Hodges custom Vito snake to boot.
Vincent is my #2 favorite alto player (right behind his mentor, Cannonball). Anyway, as usual, his soloing is flawless. Interestingly, I hear a lot of Sonny Stitt in his playing.
Apple Pie is great but some people prefer Peach Pie.... both can LOVE and pick what make the heart flutter. I have 2 Yamaha 62 purple logo. Sometimes I take one of a short tour, because it is fun to play. Of the 2 I prefer my 82Z. But my 82Z is not really a 82Z
It's very incredible but not beautiful. It's an over-engraved saxophone... Not balance on the drawing composition.... And There is conflict and strong Asian culture and west elements on a same instrument...

Is Yamaha going to market this as the Vincent Herring model ? If so when will it be on the market for public consumption?
Mr. Herring, can you give your opinion on manufacturing?
Wonderful Horn!!

Just saw it when Vincent Herring played in Paris a few days ago. It's a beauty.

Wow!
All a bit silly really - Yamaha 62 models are a close to 'perfect' any way after Eugene's input . Bit of expensive fun I suppose . xx
