I'm very glad to see Breena so high, when the face commanders were spoiled she was my favourite mechanically and has my favourite art. A Bird warlock smooth talker sounds like something from a really weird DnD campaign.

This is the first time I picked up all 5 decks. So many fun and unique cards throughout all of them.

There’s actually 9. There is technically one in the set number. They barely missed.
Laelia also has a bunch of synergies you're missing. Beyond impulse draw, which there quite a bit of nowadays, you have cards like:
Bag of Holding, Uba Mask, God Pharoh's Gift, Mimic vat, Etali, Phyrexian Devourer, grim lavamancer, Underworld Breach and other Escape cards, cascade effects, Delve, Encore, Vault Robber, Bomat courier, izzet chemister, Soul of new phyrexia, etc.
There is definitely a deck there
She's decent and could be a pretty fun bliz commander for keeping the combo stackers on their toes. But you have to remember "...one or more...": No matter how many cards you exile, you only get a single counter.
I’m actually playing a Lorehold draft as I’m watching this video! They’re actually pretty good: currently 4-2 and I’ll tell you what my final record is in a few minutes I guess. But yeah I was lucky enough to open Quintorius (the elephant dude as you called him), Radiant Scrollweaver (who is just bonkers with two copies of Rip Apart), and not one but TWO copies of Faithless Looting!
Totaled 6 wins 3 losses!

Something what Makes ton of extra work and Most People probably wouldnt even notice if you guys would stop that. But things like this makes your reviews so much More enjoyable than the Card Reviews of other Channels and for someone like me, who doesnt know a lot of the lore, thats Pretty fun to Hear :)
We're definitely keeping that going throughout this series, it's cool that at this point, we have talked about the lore of every single legendary creature in magic (over 1,100)
y'all severely underrated Rionya; she goes infinite with combat celebrant, other creatures that give you more combat steps. Alternatively you run Goblin Settler and blow up everyone's lands and provide the best protection in magic (your opponents cant play). Running dockside extortionist with her creates loops that easily win the game. She is probably the second most powerful commanders in C21; the biggest knock against her is her casting cost being higher than 4. She is def not a blow out in cEDH because her casting cost , but over all she is incredibly powerful and brings a new powerful way to play spell slinger in mono red.
(this comment is towards the power/ uniqueness rating. On the lore end i entirely agree lmaoooooo Wizards plz)
Fellow Rionya truther spotted!!! My secret tech is going to be threaten effects, plus pact of the titan for a free spell and if you chain off without having a creature to copy on board. Catalyst elemental and wily goblin do a cute dockside extortionist impression. Also kiki combo fits in the deck nicely, and mark down imperial recruiter as a win on the spot if cloned card as well!
Also resolving Godo while she is on board is infinite as well

I feel like everyone is missing the “up to” on Nils. I agree that he’s not super powerful, but I think he’s better than he lets on at first glance. He also does something the turn he comes in and at the very least gives one of your creatures a +1/+1 counter every turn.

I feel veyran should have been much higher on uniqueness, no other permanent even had done this before. I would have said power 5, fun 7, artwork 8, coolness 7, and uniqueness 10. I am bias though.

Rionya can be crazy if you have the right build around. Goes infinite with Port Razer/Combat Celebrant and if you copy a Humble Defector you get 2 free draws for doing literally nothing except playing the game.
Rionya is my bae (and best deck too)! Also getting a bunch of Humble Defector copies can really help dig through the deck :D

I have to disagree.
05:10 Rionya seems like a commander made for an infinite combo, like with creatures that generate extra combat steps. Pretty sure she should be at power 4 at least. A worse Kiki-Jiki, but that's still good.
Rionya was very underrated here. The guaranteed token copy means you're always getting some value, there are plenty of ways in red to increase storm count easily, and there are excellent creatures she can use for the win (eg Combat Celebrant, Fanatic of Mogis)

I think you guys may have missed a trick with ruxa , for example in a tokens deck it becomes an almost entirely unlockable deck ...that's savage especially if it's simic tokens as they can be 20/20 creatures easily ...yet to see someone not worried about several 20/20 unnlockables lol
I made a VEYRAN commander deck, and it pops off! i added a bunch of copy spells to it! Comet Storm.... copied.... and miltikicked.... with a gittersnipe on the field. only costs 8 mana to deal over 20 dammage
While from a competitive standpoint I do agree that Ruxa isn't very good, I think you're undervaluing him at least a little. For starters, there's nothing saying you can't play Beast Whisperer in the deck, since it synergizes with everything the deck wants to do aside from the vanilla pump. But be honest, how often are you swinging with Beast Whisperer anyway? And if you still really don't want to include him, just throw in a Great Henge or Guardian Project for the same effect.
That said, his home is probably in more casual tables, which now that I think about it is likely outside the scope of this ranking system.
It's literally just a bear tribal commander. Most of the bears in magic are vanilla creatures with no abilities. I think it's actually better than Ayula for that deck.. has a way to get damage through and pseudo card advantage from returning your dead bears to hand.
@@kierans8620 Ruxa is super useful in an Ayula deck, but Ruxa has far more flexibility than Ayula as the commander. There are several vanilla creatures with stat blocks higher than their mana values, most of which aren't bears.
Happy I picked Osgir as my commander to build around for c21 also glad it now has the nitpicking nerds seal of approval!

Well, okay, sure, you're not wrong on the power score, but every other score should be higher, ESPECIALLY coolness and uniqueness.
It's also worth pointing out that even though he's only so-so power-wise as a Commander, he's outstanding in the 99 of Ayula (who already turns vanilla 2/2s into fight or buff spells) or any other token Commander that does more for their tokens than just making them kinda' sorta' unblockable.
I feel like Ruxa is way better than it gets credit for. It basically says vanilla creature's you control are unblockable. It wants you to dump a ton of cheap beaters and then swing for a bunch of damage

The lack of haste hurts the deck, but I think Vanilla tribal is a hilariously cool.and unique idea.
Theoretically Yedora, a sac outlet and temur charger is infinite mana :P Also YAY people not sleeping on Breena.

Felisa is fueled by your non-token creatures with ANY TYPE of counter - e.g., Icatian Moneychanger (lol). You will be able to create dozens of 2/1 flying inklings by letting all your non-token creatures die via blocks or crazy-ass attacks. Add the new Dramatic Finale and your inklings are 3/2 flyers. Add Anointed Procession and you get twice as many tokens, etc. Felisa doesn't have to do anything but sit there. I've already built this deck list and I expect to win a bunch with it.
The art of Osgir just speaks to me. What a lad.
Ruxa also is drawing the glyphs from Muraganda Petroglyphs, and he's a fun but janky bear commander! I have him in the 99 of my Ayula deck.

Yedora combos with morph creatures, deck feels like high power with the tons of infinite combos in command zone on top of innately good ramp
You guys realize Rionya goes infinite with Combat Celebrant the turn you cast it, right?
Not to mention Port Razer and Breath of Fury; with enough pumps Lightning Runner infinite; and Scourge of the Throne might not be infinite since your own lifetotal might be a roadblock, but do you need infinite off flying 5/5s to 6/6s? Then there is the not infinite stuff like Angrath's Marauders, Terror of the Peaks, Malignus, maybe even just Utvara Hellkites for a boardwipe or die scenario.

Also stuff like Solemn, ramping you beyond green decks while getting card draw with a sac outlet.
Black jellyfish octopi, big blue whale with a mile wide eye, Vampire squid, bugeye worm things youve never seen BABAY!
Ruxa is perfect for an Ayula bears tribal, clearly what he was made in mind for. Most bears lack any abilities
Ruxa should be 2 points up in uniqueness, 1 more on coolness, 1 more in fun and maybe even 1 more in power.
Btw on the Octavia Blue legendary that makes 8/8s Is 8 eight times just an interesting point
Rionya is being criminally underestimated, hello dockside extortionist, and hello threaten effects.
And not to mention the like 4 one card combos
Finally with Esix we found a way to break avenger of zendikar! jokes aside, my take on Octavia was 31 Lands, 15 creatures of which most are 1&2 cost flying/unblockable and rest low cmc instants and sorceries. Probably the lowest cmc avg of any deck I made so far

When a vehicle is crewed, which can be done at instant speed, does that count as an artifact creature entering the battlefield since the artifact vehicle becomes and artifact creature when it is crewed? This question was inspired by the elephant artificer.
Also as someone else mentioned already you are sleeping on Rionya's power level, she's pretty nuts
Karn Silver Golem is gonna be a fantastical addition to the Alibou deck. Play all of the 2 mana and under Mana Rocks, turn them into creatures, then attack
Laelia, despite being not that great for Commander is one of the best 1v1 cards in the set. It's the number one card I want from C21 for my cube.
Actually the plural of Octopus is Octopodes. There are three basic ideas for the pluralization: Octopi, Octopuses, and Octopodes. Because the word is Greek in origin the pluralization makes the most sense to also be Greek in origin, thus Octopodes. Yeah I know, I'm super fun at parties.
Can yedora be used with bounce lands where you tap the forest creature, such as a llanowar elf to float Mana, play a bounce land to send the forest elf to your hand and then use that floating green to cast it again?
That way you don't run out of creatures of they all become lands.
Ruxa would work in Graham Stark(loading ready run)'s commander deck called bear force one, which is all about 2/2 for twos and bear creature types most of which have no abilities.

Finally I'm right about something
I think Pako and Haldan in particular got a raw deal on their power score. They are the only "Partner with" pair that truly don't do much of anything if you don't play both, so I get that individually they are pretty underwhelming. As a pair though they are quite powerful, certainly higher than a 3 and a 1 for power respectively.
I personally think the "Partner with" commanders should be ranked together, at least with respect to power, because if you're not playing the other partner, what are you even doing?

i am surprised that Veyran is ranked so low. i have a deck with commander and i can say she is really power fully and i have gotten turn 5-4 wins with out even trying to make my deck a cedh deck. i would not sleep on this commander she is very powerful.
Alibou with Rebecc and Losheel is truly scary. All your artifact creatures are nearly impossible to stop
Would be interested to see a category based on what decks these cards would go well in. Basically I'm trying to decide whether to make Veyran the general of my spell slinger deck or stick with Kykar and the added white.
1:25 What about if you run him in the 99 with Vilis as your commander? You don't just create a demon token, you also draw cards equal to that demons life.
Could be fun and in the flavour of the deck. Powerwise, though, you probably don't need a slow and dependent five mana card for drawing cards with Vilis, of all things.
I think Laelia will go very well in my 1v1 Anje deck with all of the Escape cards, Grim Lavamancer and other similar effects.
I don’t like Nils that much but it’s worth mentioning he counts ANY counters that happen to be on your opponents creatures right?

Currently trying to build Octavia. Trying the balance the amount of creatures with instants and sorceries is where I’m at now. I’m trying a self-mill package and some draw/discard spells to fill the grave early
my plan for it was to go a little creature heavy with buyback and rebound good stuff, with cantrips, basically most things that repeat, or recycle themselves, with more good ability low power creatures
This list just goes to show how incredibly good the legendary creatures have been recently. I feel like every one of these video’s there’s like 8 new top 150 cards!
Totally! There's usually 1-4 clunkers that don't do much, but mostly they are cool and powerful designs, and one factor keeping them ahead is the better art magic has seen over the past five years or so
Veyran and Fiery Emancipation equals x9 damage on permanents. So that is fun.

Octavia should be absolutely ridiculous in Talrand Cantrip tribal
My favorite thing about the Octopus commander is that you can play all of the Unblockable 1 mana Rogue's and a ton of cheap cantrips and they all turn into unblockable 8/8's. Blighted Agent will be the best card for this deck
Plus all the spells that make cheap tokens as an addon. Lazotep plating is now protection and a value piece at the same time, for example.
You can give Alibou infect with grafted exoskeleton and then kill people with poison counters since she's doing the damage.
My gripe with Felisa is that she has flying, but nothing on the art indicates that she can fly

The rating on veyran seems ..... horribly off. The amount of value potential this thing gives is really damn good. Granted yes its probably better in a deck, but its by far the strongest potential commander from the prismari deck.
She's just a standard panharmonicon. Her strength is dependent on the price of the vanilla Izzet spell stack you can stick under her, which would be powerful either way, but more powerful under some other Izzet commanders. I could agree on a five, or even six, but certainly not more than that. Plus, *she was* rated as the most powerful Prismari commander, as you can see.
@@qwormuli77 Okay and I can say for certain she would demolish a good number of the commanders from the strixhaven cycle. Also the prismari elder dragon is considerably stronger as it's just worse izzet urza. But from strixhaven there's only dina, galazeth, extus and maybe osgir that are stronger than veyran

Just wondering if you think Valki’s “powerful” rating should be lowered at all, based on how they’ve closed the loophole with Cascade? Does that impact your opinions of him?
I think that was mostly a jank strategy, definitely affects his rating in modern and legacy more than commander :)
I have literally destroyed people with my Teddy Ruxa. I play it with a copy/tokens. Makes my beefy fractals even beefier. I mean it's not as my commander but it is a great card.
Ah but you see Ruxa isn't meant as a commander my friends, it's a slam dunk add on for the Ayula bear force one deck
I bet it does a lot better in the 99; this series only examines them as commanders though so we weren't hating on the card in a general sense 👍

Rionya is much more powerful then a 3. She has a 2 card infinite combo with herself and you don't have to cast an instant and sorcery. It is plus one
Yeah I don’t really understand the 3 power, you can very easily create 5 copies of your best etb creature and immediately win the game.
And it happens the turn it comes out so you get immediately value

I was pumped for osgir but after playing it for awhile it just felt like a golgari Artifact deck.
He kind of is but it is still really cool
The deck that surprised me the most was adrix and nev using curse of swine on your own creatures to make a huge army, copying a risen reef or an emergent sequence land to ramp and destroying your own clue tokens with beast within or terrastadon to make your own army of 3/3s souch fun.
Nils is totally typecast for the "F" you Quandrix role. Or any other counters commander/strategy an opponent is playing. If I'm playing Breena, ya I'll probably bring him along over ghostly prison...but he will be first on the chopping block if I want to swap something else in. 🤙

Well , I'm disappointed with the card.
- Cost more than Vito
- Doesn't Give it's value right away
- Take away the life you would gain
- No guarantee damage to your oponents
- No activated ability to suport himself
- Don't work in other peoples turns.
- Both of them are Monoblack commanders , with a man with open arms in the art, who want you to gain Life
The cards it's so poorly design, is like they didn't remember Vito exists. And this one it's supposed to be design for commander !
For the first commander the card reads you may pay X life, so you don’t have to if you don’t want to.
But still, either your commander does nothing (bad) or he works against your lifegain deck (also bad). Pretty much a _damned if you do, damned if you don't_ -effect on a five mana body.
Wizards should hire Beezy to write the lore for the upcoming sets
You guys misunderstood Zaffai as a commander. It's not about casting a 10 mana spell, it's just whether the spell you SCRY is mana value of 10... So you can cast a 1 mana instant and then reveal a 10 mana card and do 10 damage. Doesn't cost 10 mana. Just saying, I've got a Zaffai deck and I rape and murder with that ability. Consistently
“That spell’s mana value” refers to the spell that caused the ability to trigger, not the card you look at when you scry.

Ugh, Strixhaven was hilariously bad about the whole 'if we change a letter (or if you're very lucky, 2), it's a totally new name!' trope. I know it's hard to make up names that don't sound stupid, but the context of the game helps prevent silly names from sounding as silly. We don't need 1 letter off names in MtG, raise the new noun budget already!
Note, I don't have an issue with straight up using real world names sometimes (IE in a specific plane), and we've got various examples of that. I just don't like 1 letter off names. It's a pet peeve I think, it seems so painfully lazy, worse than just 'smack the keyboard and then add vowels' system I've used before.

Disagree with many of these.
Veyran has a 1 card combo (Fury Storm) to kill one opponent out of nowhere and can do so much.
Rionya can also produce much value.. And a few others are not given enough credit.

I meant Tivash, not Tavish. As a side note, a player can choose to keep the life gained or make a creature.
You can, but you still either nonbo with your lifegain deck or do nothing with an other deck. Plus, a five mana 4/4 that makes dumb beaters once a turn.

Nope, Abilities never deal combat damage, even if it triggers during combat.

Why do you guys hate Ghostly Prison so much? It's a pretty good card. It stops going wide strategies by your opponents and often no one will attack you as they would rather use the mana to cast spells in the early to mid game especially. I just think you all are way off the mark.
It falls into the category of "proactive defense" and those cards tend not to be very good. It also gives opponents a choice as opposed to something like a stax piece which prevents something outright. And in general, we don't find attacking to be worth pursuing as a main win condition, as almost every deck is able to assemble a much more reliable way to win like a combo or critical mass engine. So if you aren't getting run over by specifically a go-wide type of deck, it kind of just reads 3 mana gain some life and we personally aren't interested. Maybe we will make a short or something to help clarify more
@@NitpickingNerds I appreciate the response and I certainly agree that if combat is off the table it's very bad. If your games consistently are against 8+ power level decks then you're absolutely right, but wide token strategies can filter up into 7 power level ranges in which case I think you're underestimating ghostly Prison. Pretty much agree to disagree, I think. Love your guys channel. Keep it up!
