A Beatles triple album with that sequence of thirty songs would be epic.
I really believe that “band on the run” would’ve been an exciting song for the entire group to do. Especially with that suite of starting off as a ballad then a hard rock song then an acoustic song. It would’ve been a magnificent song to record as the Beatles
Very cool! My first choice for Paul's solo career would be Back Seat Of My Car. Just got to the point where it was one of his that was chosen. Nice!
That one scored rather high. That's one I would have traded Maxwell's Silver Hammer for. Abbey Road would be even better with with it!

I can totally hear Paul on lead vocals for Badfinger's "Day After Day". I'm betting they would have knocked that one outta the park! Note that this is not to disparage my beloved Badfinger's version...
I didn't know this poll was taken. But if I had, I would have voted for "Photograph", as I'd mentioned on your "Beatles Last Album" video that that would have made the perfect goodbye song for the band. Also, they did actually try to work out "Jealous Guy" for the Get Back project, though back then, it was called "Child of Nature".
McCartney's performance of All Things Must Pass at the Concert for George was quite amazing in my opinion. Doubtful he would have sung the lead if they had worked on it as a group but McCartney's voice as background would have been interesting to hear.
You actually can hear a Beatles practice version of ATMP here on UA-cam! I think it comes from the third Beatles Anthology album.

Btw... if McCartney had chosen to release "Maybe I'm Amazed" as a single in 1970 - it probably would have been a #1 hit for many weeks.
@@aBeatleFan4ever The point is, another day Under performed. Although it was a top 10 hit. Ringoes first hit was a surprise because he was not known as a singer. When it comes to hit Singles he is the outlier because at the most he only was a lot in one song per album. Now out of the gate he has a top 10 hit. Which is much more impressive than anything the other Beatles have done solo
When the song "I Can Help" by Billy Swan came out , I honestly thought it was Ringo's song.
Have you heard Ringo's unreleased version he did back in 1987 in Memphis ? It's pretty good and should get released one day, not just on bootlegs.

It's a little tough to exclude "Double Fantasy" as being from 1980, as so many of John's most palatable solo songs are found there. I had early-voted for "Woman" before hearing that parameter later in the video, and also unintentionally cheated with two wild cards, I think, before hearing we were allowed any. "Instant Karma" is an obvious great choice, and I think "#9 Dream was one of my own wild card picks. All great choices, though. I am much in tune with the bunch of you.

I'm sure I did vote on this but I can't remember what tunes I picked!
Listening now, the one tune that leaps to my mind is John's "You Don't Know What You Want (Until You Lose It)" which would have benefited enormously from a harmony vocal by Paul.
It would have been up there with "Don't Let Me Down" as an example of how brilliantly they could vocalise together in a hard, bluesy, rock mode.
What You Got
What I find interesting is how they all seemed to lose direction after the Beatles. Very little actually sounds like Beatles, and while a lot of songs are as good as Beatles songs, the majority is a far bit below.
Maybe they lacked the competition and critique of their fellow Beatles, or maybe it is hard to fill a whole album on your own with great songs.
I agree with you. Even with the great solo songs, I'm left feeling that they would've been taken to a new height if The Beatles had done them.
Badfinger would be a good subject for a video, as far as I remember Paul McCartney gave them their first hit here in the UK, they had some decent songs of their own especially Without You a huge hit for Harry Nilsson, sadly tragedy struck the band with suicides and I think they were ripped off financially.
Good call for a band with strong label and mentor ties with The Beatles. Keep in mind that Lennon allegedly gave them their name and Harrison produced half of STRAIGHT UP, as well.
So much to choose from, even without listening to them all again, I went with my first thoughts and did not think they would rank - but the did! I guess others with thinking like me. Some I thought seemed too obvious and did not include them but I am glad they were included by others. So many of the picks were very good and would have been wonderful within the Beatle context. I am 63 years old and have grown up with the 60s from my parents, relatives and friends. Te 60s -mid 70s and stil enjoyed by me to this day. Your channel is my most visited. Matt, my name is Les Blue and I am from Aberdeen Wa. I love each and every thing about your channel and feel that I've learned quite a lot from it. I'm a Beatles fanatic and also a lifelong guitarist that switched to the Hofner Bass to replace a soon to be leaving bass player in a well established Beatles Tribute Band. Paul is the MAN ......Man. Anyway, that's more than enough about me. The reason for my comment is that I'd love to see you do that thing you do for a band that lots of people seem to forget about, and that's "Three Dog Night".... Not only did they have late 60's charting success, but were also rarely without a charting song through the mid 70's. They paved the way for lots of great song writers, they were personal friends with other legendary musicians, they were also one of the first bands that were not afraid to mix the races..... Floyd Sneed, what a drummer!! I believe that they had more hit singles, albums and sold out more concerts than almost any other band out there. Why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame continues to ignore them is beyond me. Would love to see what you think... Keep up the great work, Thank you.
Hey Les! Thank you for the support and the kind words. Yes Three Dog Night was one of those bands that got us into the 70s in a big way. I have such a long list and my main focus will be on bands whose careers and influence were mainly in the 60s but I do have some bands like Three Dog Night that would be good additions. Thank you for the request!
If "How Do You Sleep"? had a different theme and different lyrics it would be a shoe-in. Most people have similar tastes when it comes to potential Beatles songs. "It Don't Come Easy" is easily the most Beatlesque Ringo track. Cheers.

An interesting survey would be if the Beatles made a reunion tour in the 1980 what would be their live set playlist choices and in which order.
I do have something like that planned for the future coupled with an _Album That Never Was,_ so stay tuned!
Maybe they would have done a Bootleg Beatles type show, with costume changes related to the period of the songs they were playing. Or perhaps, like Elvis, they'd have done their early hits in a medley, and concentrated their show on the more mature work, with a few solo hits thrown in for good measure.
Just a couple of thoughts..I forgot to participate! But it seems to me both the RINGO songs in the top 14 were actually co-written by George Harrison..It Don’t Come Easy only has Ringo credited but to me I believe it’s pretty definite ,George was very much in there from the Guitar introand outro to the chord structure I thing Harrison’s contributions deserved a co-write and of course there is the version with him Singing it . I actually believe most of these songs would be very different if The Beatles were the musicians doing these..one of the best examples would be MAYBE I’m Amazed , I think that could be the best example of a solo song The Beatles might have done. I laughed out loud at "21st Century Schizoid Man". There's a recording on YT of Ringo playing drums on "In the Court of the Crimson King" from when Greg Lake was an All-Starr. And it sounds very like... Ringo playing drums on 'ITCOTCK". 😉
Badfinger's "We're For the Dark" is a very underappreciated gem.

Badfinger albums are loaded with underappreciated gems....Magic Christian music has Crystal Ship, Dear Angie, Midnight Sun....No Dice got I Can't take it, Bloodwyn, Believe me, as well as we're for the dark.... straight up got take it all, name of the game, perfection....ass got apple of my eye, constitution, the winner, blind owl...and that's just barely scraping the surface.... Google the live version of constitution and hear that fiery guitarwork which alone by itself merits induction into the Hall of Fame, where they & not trash like Madonna, belong.....
I'm glad Blow Away made the cut! I'm not sure what the Beatles would have added to Imagine. I think having George Martin and Geoff Emerick in the control room may have colored some of Lennon's solo stuff in a positive way. Similarly, Lennon and Harrison may have improved or nixed some of McCartney's more questionable flights of fancy. Wild Card for me : John singing lead on My Sharona with Paul and George doing backup and all three playing the solo.

I'm so annoyed that I missed off "Getting Closer" from my list- it shows the potential of the final Wings line up, with great playing and a very interesting coda. It could really have done with some Lennon input on the lyrics to make it more memorable.

Pretty much matched what I expected: "It Don't Come Easy," "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Instant Karma" and George's songs like "All Things Must Pass" and "Isn't It a Pity" would have made a great final album for the Beatles (believe many of these were written, or being written in 1969 and 1970).
I'm also glad "Beware of Darkness" made the cut--one of my favorite George songs. But where is "What Is Life" and "If Not For You"? Throw out "Uncle Albert" and "Silly Love Songs" though. Paul wrote those to prove that he could write something as bad or worse than "Maxwell's Silver Hammer".
I was very surprised when you were bringing up ELO, Tears for Fears, Badfinger that there was one person left out of that group of names and that would have been Emitt Rhodes. Just thought I'd throw that in. Another one I thought of was The raspberries overnight sensation.
Rhodes sadly never became a Big Star. Great songs, though.

So amazing that he could write songs like that from the get go, and strange that they/he didn't end up among the big stars of the 60s. I would probably have chosen "Listen. Listen." as the wild card if I had voted. Would have been interesting to hear an early Beatles-version of that one, like a "Twist and Shout".

My favorite solo Beatles songs would be Jealous Guy It Don't Come Easy Some People Never know Another Day Back Seat Of My Car so many George songs but my favorite solo song of his would have to be all the songs from All Things Must Pass
Loving these Beatles polls Matt. I hope you do more of them. Well `maybe im amazed` that i picked the number 1 songs for Paul, George & Ringo. I also selected the 2nd highest song for John, `Instant Karma`. Of course that has the great piece of Top Of The Pops footage with John & Yoko each with cropped hair and Yoko up to her antics, sanitary towel for a blindfold whilst knitting. Watch it on UA-cam.
I really enjoy your videos! Especially the ones about the groups that I had only fleetingly heard about. I'm 70 years old and I grew up with the Beatles. They were really the only group that I paid attention to. Regarding your video about the solo Beatle songs, are you aware of a book titled "Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles Solo Careers" by Andrew Grant jackson? I stumbled upon it a few years ago, and I have studied and re-read it quite a few times! Looking forward to your next video!

Thanks for the poll and the vid Matt! This was a fun exercise as I thought about how and IF each of the four could have contributed on my picks.. There is plenty of solo work from all of them that I just could not see the them performing together.

I would have loved to have seen John's face if Paul had made him spend 3 days recording the harmonies for The Frog Song. 😂 Also, I'd have loved The Beatles to have recorded Too Many People and How Do You Sleep on the same album. It would would have been like a Libertines record.

He Recently Published a Beatle Book Also - he published a US Based Beatle Fan Magazine- Good Day Sunshine & Coordinated BeatleFest Conventions in the NY/ NJ/ CT back in the 80s & 90s.
This summer will be 35 years since I went on a Beatle Themed Vacation to the UK that he arranged in association with a Liverpool Based Beatle Fan Club.
We saw All the Beatles Sites in Liverpool & London & also had a Tour & Recording Session in Abbey Road Studios.
I recently came across his name & it brought back memories of that trip- Unfortunately My Photos & Other Items I got on the Trip appears to be gone when looking in my storage.

I love the Frog song too! Adorable! I think I didn't participate in this survey. How come? i guess I didn't see it. I would have included some sort of new songs by Ringo and Paul. They both have released very good songs recently.
I missed the poll for this. It's a fun concept. I'll give my picks anyway. Watching the Wheels by John, Isn't it a Pity from George, Back Seat of My Car from Paul, and Photograph from Ringo. For the wildcard I will jump on the Badfinger bandwagon with a lesser known Pete Ham song called Lonely You. While it's a lovely song, I don't think the production did it justice. Would love to hear a full on Beatles production with John singing lead with Paul and George doing harmony and backing vocals.
There is a near perfect version of isn't it a pity recorded by all four Beatles. It's available under the working title 'Hey Jude'.

I do apologise profusely for suggesting The No No Song for Ringo. I agree, he's done far better than this one, but it just seemed logical when you consider some of the other songs he did with the band. I'm feeling shame, but still maintain my logical thinking 😁

It was a cool exercise, but to what extent did it turn into a popularity contest of Beatle solo songs? If it did, then it missed the point of the exercise, which is to think of songs that did not live to their potential without the Beatles unit to work on them. Why would you name Beware of Darkness? It’s also my favorite George song, and it sounds wonderful in its current form; I can think of a million other George songs that have potential but leave me unsatisfied in their current form because, unfortunately, the Beatles weren’t there to make them great. I hoped Matt would discuss the songs in terms of what the Beatles might have done to them, how different they might have sounded from their released form. For example, my nominee for the John song was How Do You Sleep. It could have been a great song in the Revolution or Glass Onion mold, but on the Imagine album it just plods along and drags. I can’t help but remember how the Beatles transformed Revolution into an uptempo kick-ass political rocker. I think the Beatles would have made a great cut from How Do You Sleep, more upbeat, with a more effective arrangement, possibly a bridge and improved lyrics.

Hi Matt. I'm sure I will not be the only viewer to point out Ringo did record a solo version of "I can help", produced by Chips Moman. The sessions that resulted in Ringo's recording were disputed in court, where Ringo succeeded in keeping the tracks from being released. Have a listen to this tune. I'll be surprised if you don't hear Ringo's voice in your head. I think it could be a massive hit for him.... "All Night" by Pointed Sticks. Yes, it's on youtube. Cheers

It's hard for me to hear what P, G &R would have contributed to "Imagine"- a piano ballad with only one voice and no guitar or bass presence. Those two from Ringo were halfway there with George, though John and Paul's voices would have been extremely welcome, and Paul's bass...but I was thinking of things that really wanted the instrumental and vocal presence of the other three. Didn’t do the survey but my key criterion would have been whether it’s a better song than record, since the Beatles were such masterful arrangers (and charisma generators) together. Forgive me but the Frog Song is a great example; listen to the cover by Choirs with Purpose and Michelle McManus; the melody and chords are gorgeous. My Love, too; it would have been less saccharine. No need to redo Jet, What Is Life, or Instant Karma; they sound great as is.
I also wonder if the exercise could have accounted for Lennon and McCartney giving each other finishing touches on the songs themselves. Some McCartney (and Lennon) lyrics could have benefited from that …

@@2msvalkyrie529 That song could be a standard that everyone knows and loves, if presented without ribbits. My one quibble is the line, "but what's the point on a beautiful night?" Paul is singing that we should all stand together and fight the fight and never give in -- then negates it by saying not to bother since it's a nice night out. I'm a Paul partisan but have to admit that he sometimes doesn't seem to understand the implications of his own lyrics.

I had not seen mentioned anywhere-- Buddy Holly's debut single in 1956 is the song titled "Love Me" with the lyric "love me do" several times. "Love Me Do" is the debut Beatles single said to have been written in 1957. Was this coincidence intentional?
I apparently misunderstood the Wild Card category and never thought outside the box of their solo catalogs. I chose 'Eat At Home' because it's a great Holly-esque rocker that would have been right "at home" had it been performed by them at the Rooftop show.
I wonder how many times the band would have split up recording these songs. George would be happy to play with John and Ringo, but John wouldn't want to have to spend time on George's material (note his lack of reciprocation during Imagine sessions). How many takes of George's songs would the band sit through? How much 'Granny music'/could each tolerate? And whether the band had split in 1970/80.//One thing is certain. Yoko would be at the sessions.
And I look at most of the top picks. Maybe I'm amazed, All Things Must Pass, photograph... My Sweet Lord. The most highly rated solo stuff... Beatles fans love these songs. Yet when these polls come up, they are suddenly 'in need of improvement'.
I know its a game, but surely there has to be some musical reason for picking a song rather than simply picking your favourites and saying 'I wish someone else was there with no thought to how it might work or improve things'.
Oh my love. A simple song, one man singing at a piano. Does it need a backing band? Look at Yesterday. Sometimes less is more.

Matt, the interesting thing about the majority of this list is that most of these songs are some of their best solo songs, and I can’t see how even the Beatles could do them better without zapping the unique individuality out of the song. They are the purist form of their individuality incapsulated in music. I’m not sure the Beatles could do the signature song Maybe I’m Amazed better than McCartney could do solo. Same with Imagine and Blow Away. Sometimes there are too many cooks in the kitchen, and the dessert don’t need the extra sugar sprinkles. Or did I just miss the whole point of the video? Sorry I just started typing away. Would I have loved to see these as Beatle songs post Abbey Road? Yes! But not at the expense of their solo legacy. However, I think some of there mid level songs would certainly be greatly elevated by the band.
I can see how the Beatles could do a WAY better job on Maybe I'm Amazed. McCartney's drumming is sophomoric and is guitar playing is executed very sloppily. The guitar arrangement is superb, but he is out of his league doing this song himself. Imagine could use a George & Paul harmony that would improve it greatly for me personally and Blow Away could use some more biting bass from Paul to give it the edge it lacks. As for the mid range songs, the Beatle band dynamic would certainly elevate it to a point, but you can't do much with shit songs no many how many Beatles play on it. I voted for 'The Mess'. Would've been cool to hear John sing with Paul on that one. I'm a bit baffled by the votes for 'Early 1970'. Considering the lyrics, that's like, the ultimate SOLO Beatles song.
George seemed to do real well which makes me happy. Woman by John not there apparently. Thats one of my favorites. Yes Blowaway is a masterpiece and should have been higher.
King Crimson had a very strong but not obvious Beatles influence. They even did a song about the Beatles breakup called Happy Family (which itself might have made a funny wild card).

Hey Matt great video as always ever did a review of songs that sound very Beatlesque like "Lies" by the Knickerbockers very Lennon like "The Dancer" by the Australian band The Allusions very 1960's McCartneyesque "Dr. Marvello" by the Canadian band Klaatu has a Harrison sitar Magical Mystery Tour sounding vibe "Old Bones" by Harry Nillson sound very Ringo like. As much as I would rail against Phil Spector's "wall of sound" on ATMP, I *do* like it on "What Is Life". I certainly think between your previous videos on ATMP and Jackon's Get Back (although it barely shows up in the latter), a lot of your viewers are like me and would love to have heard it as a proper completed version. "Beware of Darkness" is one I forgot about, but actually I remember it from The Concert for George where Eric Clapton is singing it. Dunno if that had any impact 20 years on, but still.
I love his solo version, but hearing George Harrison’s song “Dear One” with John and Paul in three part vocal harmony would have been amazing too! ( I may have voted for this one in the poll, I forget)
I wish I would've made this survey on time, and that I was able to chime in. But I would've certainly chosen the solo recordings noted with these. Certainly EMI ( or somebody) should be working on a compilation following in the same vein - John, Paul, George & Ringo from 1970 to 1980.
Your video brings up the topic of bands that had Beatles' influences, and one thing I've noticed over the last couple of years is a personal, general dislike of Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra concept. I know the band was formatted to carry on pop music in the "I Am The Walrus" tradition, but, as I've grown older that concept of "they sound good when they sound like the Beatles" doesn't hold water with me anymore. But I still think that Lynne is a fine composer and certainly one of the greatest producers ever.
Lynne's ELO work is very solid but he gets lambasted for his production work which is very dated now. I'm not a fan of his 90s production - namely on Harrison's Brainwashed.
This also raises the question: if some of these were not solo but Beatles tunes, if they would be given more clout or credibility. I think it's almost certainly the case.
'Hang On Paul' by the Nazz would have been my 'Wild Card' choice.

Interesting to read the final list, though I am not sure what The Beatles could have added to Imagine. On thinking about solo songs, how different might things have been if John had come up with Instant Karma! before Cold Turkey. The Beatles would have found it harder to say no to it, and a very different conclusion to The Beatles story might have been possible. Could Ringo have played a drum part like Alan White, though...?
Allan: The answer to your question about whether Ringo could have played drums in a similar manner as Alan White did on “Instant Karma” is…Yes! Of course! White’s shuffle on that song fits perfectly but isn’t particularly challenging. It’s very close to the beat on The Beatles’ “Revolution”. And Ringo’s fills on songs like “Rain” leave no doubt that he could play imaginative and exciting tags like those on “Instant Karma”.

Bout the closest to a "Beatle" song was probably, I'm the Greatest on the Ringo album since three of the Beatles less Paul worked on it and John wrote it. The music of I'm the Greatest reminds me of Abbey Road though not lyrically. Thats probably the closest to a beatle song that there was in their solo efforts.I think they obviously wrote and recorded songs that werent in the Beatle style less they got tagged with not having any ability but to rely on the old formulas.
Greg Lake singing "Twenty First Century Schizoid Man" sounds something like John Lennon
Badfinger was probably the most Beatles like group, tho the Bangles are also very Beatlesque.
I LOVED "The No No Song." Of course, I was 11 at the time.
This was a fun exercise, wish I had partaken in the 10 reasons why the Beatles broke up. I think some of it had to do with a lot of passive/aggressiveness from John and George. Paul and Ringo were in for the long haul.
And yet, oddly, Ringo left the band in 68. George Quit during the time at Twickenham and Paul announced the split without notifying anyone. John was the only one who technically never quit The Beatles.
@@Withcare11 Ringo left because he was feeling inferior and needed a confidence boost. George appeared unhappy even after he came back and John well, had his own agenda. Seems they both had other projects and interests outside of the Beatles and John did announce wanting a "divorce" well before Paul left but agreed to keep quiet...

Just wondering why George's "When We Was Fab" didn't get a mention? Pretty sure I voted and seems an obvious Beatles song for their later years.
I had put one parameter on the selections that they had to be from the 70s. It was voted 3 times as a wildcard selection.
A lot of these songs are so great as they are, but I voted for Well Well Well, because even though I think it's great as it is, I can't help but think how much more amazing it would have been as a Beatles' song with George Martin producing. What Is Life would have made a great Beatles song, but then a lot of George's songs would have. My wildcard was Cold Turkey, as it should have been a Beatles song, except for Paul rejecting it, which is kind of annoying.
