    Few months back I disagreed with your opinion on GA bottles being ugly...fastfoward, now with a little more navigation in the whisky world and more exposure to different bottles, I definitely agree with you. Thanks for the great content, nice laughs with your hilarious sense of humor while being informative

    My problem with the label is that, if you have more than one GA on the shelf, it looks like a pre-schooler color-coded your whiskeys.

    Great review Geoff! I fully agree.
    Edradour has become my go to when I’m wanting something sherry matured. Have you reviewed a Signatory Edradour 10 release or the 12 Caledonia? If you haven’t I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Caledonia label 😂

    I liked the old “Flintstones” style labels. I agree that new ones do look very cheap, like grocery store generic brand whiskey. That won’t stop me from buying it (the 15 year in particular).

    Hi Geoff, nice video! Where is the difference for you between Glenallachie 10 CS and the 15?
    Is it the power that is worth 2 points for you? Or something else?
    Would love to learn your opinion on this.

    Nice Geoff!
    This was really heavy on the funny side 😂
    Well done Sir👍
    Yeah I agree about the label more as a side step then a step up . Feels like it was made with Microsoft Paint. - which if they would come up and say openly: yeah we did that and we really don't care - just want to sell our whisky, it's the liquid that matters, I think everyone would go: fine.
    I think I did try this in a bar once back to back with the Tamdhu CS and yeah the Tamdhu definitely came out on top.
    Thanks for the review and the good times my friend!
    Cheers 🥃🥃

    Brutal takedown of the new label. I don’t care for it much either, also didn’t love the old one. I think the best looking bottle from them is the single cask releases, with the all-grey motif.

    Great review, as always, Geoff.
    I have recently noticed a proliferation of Sherried versions of many whiskies, not to mention the traditional Sherry bombs such as the ones you are reviewing, as if an excellent whisky couldn't lack the typical notes of this type of ageing.
    Customer tastes are, perhaps, increasingly oriented towards whiskies finished in Sherry, Madeira, Port, Amarone, Rioja or other red wine casks.
    A strange thing is instead happening to me: although I have appreciated Sherried whiskies in the past (such as Glendronach), I can no longer approach them.
    I have an excellent bottle of Thompson Brothers 6yo TB/BSW Blended Scotch here, and while I recognize its qualities, I can't fully appreciate it.
    I also gave up on purchasing a bottle of Kilchoman Sanaig so as not to find myself disappointed when faced with a preponderance of Sherried notes.
    Palate fatigue?
    I'm not giving up my daily dram, but I'm sticking to peated whiskies, aged in ex-bourbon casks.
    Has something similar ever happened to you?

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  4 місяці тому

      I don't dislike sherry quite that much, but I do think it's used to excess in a lot of whiskies. For me I prefer sherry as an element in whisky as opposed to the dominant flavour. That's why sherry bombs are no longer my go-to style. 🥃

    G, how quickly do you typically go through a bottle? I mean there is something of a shelf-life once opened, no?
    With entry level being at least $60 (in the US) good scotch is quite the luxury that I don't always feel comfortable buying.
    I keep Laphroaig 10 on hand because I like it and because I worry about price less.

    Looking forward to trying this one. Don't think the new packaging is any better than the old one--hard to believe this is the best they could come up with. More importantly, I did just get the new Glenallachie 18YO and it is fantastic. I'd maybe give the 2021 version I had (old packaging) one more point but love it overall.

    I recently bought the Batch 8 for $130 NZD but haven't opened it yet. I've run out of space for any more open bottles so have to finish a bottle of something else first to make room for this one. The Batch 9 is also readily available here but is more expensive. The only whisky I have tried from GlenAllachie previously is the MacNair's Lum Reek NAS and 12-year-old, but these are blended with whisky from other distilleries. They are both good though. The label design doesn't really bother me, but I agree with other comments that it looks like a home DIY job. I wonder how much they paid the label designers for it. Cheers!

    Luckily I have a few bottles of batch 6. At the moment only batch 7 is available here, and that was not as good as the 6 in my book. If batch 11 or newer shows up, I’m the first to pick it up. Never had a bad OB of GlenAllachie, and there’s been a few 😊

  • @jre617

    I'm a novice here, but It seems like a lot of more expensive, refined, I guess, Islay scotches are somewhat fruity.
    I keep going back to Laphroaig because it tastes less sweet to me (and the 10 is cheaper of course).
    What other Islay scotches are not so sweet?

    The typographic change alone justifies the new label... otherwise I am in complete agreement. We seem to be in an era of Supermarket-Own-Brand-Chic design in the whisky industry, though, so I guess at least it's on trend?

    Wad up , Boss G ! . . . I prefer Flinstone label... i dont hate new label, but "meh" to me ... blend fodders like GA can be thick, oily, syrupy to make up for a more generic ("liked by all") DNA . . . I blend my own, alot, so I LOVE GlenAll, as well as Cardhu and Cragganmore as my base(s) . . .

    I'm also lukewarm on Glenalliche. Just not a fan of finishing in so many different kinds of very active casks the spirit that was sitting in tired wood that came with the distillery when they bought it. I hope all those expensive casks they have bought are being refilled with their own spirit after they are used for finishing as then they won't be so over the top with just wood character. Cheers

    • @Gwhisky

    I agree with you. Glenallachie doesn't turn me on and the new design is atrocious, but evidently 60's bargain bin / People's Republic of Scotland aesthetics are clearly trending in design circles, cf. the new Speyburn design.

  • @_fwd_racecar_

    @3:31 bingo, before you said that while looking at the picture of all the new bottles, the colors reminded me of a tv game show called "the price is right" which debuted in the 70s. -- So lets guess the price of a ten year old sherry cask single malt, without going over $59?

    • @_fwd_racecar_
      @_fwd_racecar_ 4 місяці тому

      oof, not available in my market, but the 8 year old is $70, and the ten year rye wood is $98 -- The Aberlour 12, Lasanta, Glenfarclas10, and Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair are all sub $60, so was correct in guessing the alternatives.

    • @_fwd_racecar_
      @_fwd_racecar_ 4 місяці тому

      my mistake, it was cask strength, so i guess 10% higher equals double the price since the abudnah is $120

    The new label is headed in the right direction. I'm not sure why there is so much disdain for the redesign. Although it is slightly imbalanced due to the embossed element not having much visual weight, its ultimately a significant improvement over the previous label.

I have a complete line of batches 1-10; batches 3 and 4 were excellent while batch 9 comes 2nd close, and can be described as outstanding. Knowing your standards, I hypothesize that batch 11 is a mediocre.

    Struggling to get my head round these new scoring systems....just watched ralfy on the Glen Scotia Double Cask NAS 46%, he scored it 83 points & raved about it. Rightly so its a great whisky but theres no way it should be ONLY 83 points(NZ on special $81.99 Kiwi dollars). Anyway then we get your score on the Glenallachie 10YO cask strength (NZ on special Batch 9 $153.99 Kiwi or thereabouts, we havent got batch 11 yet). I have tried a few of these batches & have not had a bad one yet. I just cant see how it can be scored at 84....I know its all down to personal taste but you two reviewers scores in this instance look nonsensical. I would have thought 85 for the GS & 87/88 for the Glenallachie. What was wrong with the old scoring system....at least everyone understood it & it was mostly consistant. Keep up the good work anyway love your reviews.
