I use your basic workflow. Thanks so much for teaching me and countless others. When it is time to run out the sky however, I do it differently. I use TK8 which is an inexpensive photoshop plugin. Amount many other things, it has an action button to select the sky. One click and you are almost always right there. Thanks, Richard.
Thank you for your video and sharing your own thoughts on the subject of focal length blending, which polarises so much opinion among astrophotographers. The sky replacement feature looks an amazing tool for blending tracked and static images.
Thanks very much Craig. I think that anyone who uses a star tracker must face the reality that if we want a foreground in our shots we need to do sky replacement. I think that's a completely different conversation to replacing the sky in daytime landscape photos. As far as mixing focal lengths . .that a creative choice and one that I reckon needs full disclosure especially for those who don't fully understand such things. Creativity should have no borders but honesty in my opinion is very black and white.
Hi Richard, you made a great job! now, more than the milkway, it is great that you fill your background with nebulas! what a gorgeous nightscape! It includes the Orion, the horse head and the flame nebulas, I couldn't imagine that this could be possible using a 50mm. lents. Super!
Just been re watching this video Richard, and it's so inspiring and I really appreciate your artistic impression, it's still one of my favorite images you have done. I can't wait for the day I can find a old building (that has access) to have a go myself. There is certainly no secrets on the Richard Tatti show, you are willing to teach us everything and for this......thank you
Thanks heaps again Rob. I actually love this image myself. It's not too often I mix up focal lengths but maybe I should do some more of it in the comings days mate.
Fantastic, not only your photography tips and tricks, but your easy to follow photo editing tutorials, I learn something every time I tune in :) ........ Thankyou.
Thanks Richard for the tutorial. I know this video is a few years old but the techniques are very much relevant. Trees can always be a pain to blend through and the sky replacement tool does a pretty good job.
Good morning from New Zealand! I love your work. I'm a newbie so I appreciate the detailed explanations of the process, it's exactly what I need. Looking forward to Orion reappearing in summer. Hope you have a great day.
G'day Richard I never thought it would be possible to get a better video blog of the night sky than Richard Tattis, but I reckon I have found one. It's Richard Tattis Mark II. Your joy and love for this subject is back with a vengeance and this video diary shows it off perfectly. I love the way you explained each Rich-masterpiece-ard creation and your methods that you used in each of the mirage of shots, that you obviously enjoyed doing. Your spring is back mate, keep it up and I will look forward for your next collection of beautiful night skyscapes. Happyphotographymate Greg
What a fantastic tutorial. I never knew about the Sky Replacement Tool. I tried to do something similar to this with my Comet Neowise photo but never could work it out correctly. I always thought it was just layer masks and tedious selection tools. I'll definitely be giving this a go sometime.
Great video - one I will likely watch a number of times to really get all the nuances of what you did there. I’ve played around with blender night sky/foreground and it has been sooo frustratingly difficult when working with a broken horizon; especially with trees! Now all I need is some clear skies, no moon, and pandemic-free travel!
I agree on using sky replacements. For my situation of taking pictures out in farm country, I can avoid traspassing and take pictures from the road. I have to perk my ears up to listen for farm dogs that are not chained up.
Absolutely fantastic.... The best ever channel to learn detailed workflow for light painting and night scape images... Thank you Richard for your continuous efforts 🙏
Amazing. Please keep doing what your doing. There times when I run out gas and don't have the energy to do Astros Photography. Mostly because we have not had a clear sky for 6 weeks. But when I see your work it's the inspiration I need stay patient and look forward to get out there and take amazing photos of the stars.
Thanks Richard! Even though this video is going back a while it’s still great! I agree, sometimes sky replacement is great to use. I sometimes do this when I find an amazing subject that would be impossible to get the image with a milky sky. Love your work mate even though I have many of my own techniques I always like to see it from someone else’s perspective. Cheers Clarkie
Excellent work Richard. I also like blending backgrounds with a greater focal length to mitigate the effect of them almost disappearing when a wide angle lens is being used. A lot of people who criticize this don't understand that what we are trying to do here is to overcome the problems created by a wide or ultra wide angle lens and represent something that is more realistic!!
Love this!!! Awesome explanation as usual... I just picked up an iOptron Skytracker Pro. I'm so excited to use it for my milky way shots and deep sky objects as well..
Fantastic job my friend, you are going to make me come to Australia to make me learn this technic. I be waiting for your tutorials even that yet I have never tried photographing the sky at night. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Stay safe.
Just love your work Richard and have been following you for a while, love your passion and your workflow has definitely helped me experiment - thanks and keep publishing more
What a special treat, life changing, I am lucky enough to live near the bottom of the South Island of NZ and have had the pleasure many times but they are all still as exciting as the first one....Loved hearing your excitement it’s something you never forget! Your movies are going from strength to strength Richard well done!
Oh wow... what a great video and one I will be bookmarking and returning to often. I will be sending my Canon EOS R in this week for an Astro modification and can’t wait to work with these methods once I get it back. I don’t have a tracker but think I will have options for lovely images even without one. Thank you so much for your tutorial and inspiration. Perfect timing, too!
Great video Richard!!! I am amazed how your video camera was showing the live stars as you were doing your light painting. Would really love to see you do a video on how you bring out the nebulasity in your Orion tracked shot, Thanks for another interesting and informative video!!!
Thanks a lot for watching Gary. That's why I bought the Sony A7S3 .. it produces excellent low light video in the field. One day I'll do a video about the processing of the sky images.
Just insane this upgrade of your workflow..Impressive results and images of another galaxy .. This coming season have to give my skywatcher another chance and of pick it out of the dust. Thanks a lot Richard for share your out-of-this-world wisdom..Brilliant
Hi Richard, this was the video I have been waiting for and I was not disappointed. In your last video some one asked about polar alighnment and I replied telling of the Polemaster. This is basically the same as your iOptron one, but yours is all built in, very nice. The pics were terrific. I was gobsmacked to see the image of Orion with the 50mm f1.8 - I will have to try this myself, I can hardly believe it can show the nebulosity. Once again, many thanks for this detailed video, it was well worth it. By the way, when I shot orion I will make sure his head is at the top !
Another exceptional video and those images...oh my gosh! Just stunning! This video is definitely going into a "save folder" for reference. Art is Art. Our cameras do not see like the human eye does. I think your shooting and editing style is just incredible!
Thanks a lot for watching. Yes of course we can run that risk and it always comes down to the post processing. Added to that we all have different tastes. Appreciate your comments.
Love it and very helpful. Going to France dark sly next week to photograph the milky way and hopefully will be able to create a stunning picture like yours. 👌
Dear Richard, I think it's good that you have new ideas and try out new possibilities. It is important that all of us are open to new techniques and are able to think out of the box. Time will tell what kind of techniques you prefer for your excellent night photography.
Hi Richard, great video. Can't believe I've only just come across it as i'm a regular watcher. The sky image is superb for an unmodified camera, So much Ha. Great processing, you even got the Witches Head to show up. Maybe i'll keep my tracker and throw the telescope away.
Once again you have simplified a difficult subject with your well organized and articulate teaching style. I can't wait to get out into the field and experiment with some of the techniques you introduced. Thanks Richard!
Richrad great video, your are very articulated and your videos are tops, I need to have a coffee with you when I'm in Victoria next and pick your brain on you tube and photography lol. Great stuff mate.
Great work Richard. This is the exact reason why I purchased my tracker. Can't wait to give it a good go. It opens up so many possibilities for images.
Just wow!! Incredible. Thank you for taking time and showing your work flow when a tracker is involved. And absolutely love your fore ground choices and the thought you put into them.
That is beautiful Richard and thank you for clearly setting out your work flow, in the field and editing, I learn so much from watching your content. Can't wait for the next one!
Absolutly beautiful Richard 😍👌 aim begining to understand the work with layers and skyreplacement. Thank you so much 🙏
It does take quite a while to get our heads around this stuff Michael. Thanks for watching.

Appreciate you watching my friend.
Beautiful shot. I do see a risk of shooting the sky with a longer focal length lens however - it can begin to look artificially magnified and bright.
Thanks a lot for watching. Yes of course we can run that risk and it always comes down to the post processing. Added to that we all have different tastes. Appreciate your comments.
Wonderful images, Richard. True art. Looking forward your another experiments.
