I realize it's been awhile since my last video. Producing these longer, TV-style videos takes much more time, energy, and money than simple "X Tips for Better Y" videos. So if you like this kind of video please let me know down in the comments! I want to make sure this channel is bringing you great, helpful content, whatever form that takes. I'll be creating more videos in the "Our Beautiful Planet" series, simply because I find it a wonderful challenge. But be on the lookout for more simple educational photography videos coming your way soon as well. Thanks, my friends. You are the best!
Just a couple of years away from 70 years old "forces" me to take a much slower pace. I LOVE the Sierra Nevada. It has defined my backcountry life, and my life itself. I visited Miter Basin a long time ago and more recently with my oldest granddaughter. The Sierra Nevada is, by far, the most beautiful place on this planet. I only wish I could be around to see where it takes my grandchildren. My grandson just turned 16 years old, and he and I have been to the top of Half Dome 3 times. Life is good, and for me, the Sierra Nevada represent life itself.
I was there for a few days in July 2024. It was a good snow year and there were fish in the streams, waterfalls, and flowers everywhere. Your video is delightful!
Thank you Josh for sharing your phenomenal experiences!! Not only are the pictures spectacular, but you provide additional tidbits of information to make it a learning experience. Also, your unique style of humor added in makes for a great entertainment video. Thanks again!! On a side note, how in the world could anyone give this a thumbs down? They must be deaf and blind.......
Love the way you added the educational tip on a good place to camp “and of course 100 feet from water”. I take these things for granted, but with s many new people to the backcountry, I don’t think this is always in their DNA, so thank you.
I just stumbled upon your channel yesterday. I have been consuming nature/photography videos for years now and I have no idea how I haven't been exposed to you. As a professional editor I must say your editing and production quality is second to none in this space. Everything is so polished and your photos are great! What a treat it is to binge watch years of your content while I work. Great job. I hope to see more!
Keep these wonderfully informative videos coming Joshua, your approach to photography and zest for living the good life outdoors is truly inspirational on many levels. Love it!
I am really lucky to be the first one to view your new series and be the first one to comment. :) I love the idea of producing the new series, which make it unique among all of the photography-related videos. I also love the spirit of exploring behand the scene that sends out the message of encouragement and challenge to the viewers. Thanks for sharing your own experiences and adventures and I am looking forward to more great videos like this.
Thank you so much, Howard! I really appreciate the support and encouragement. It's always a little scary to step outside the mold of what I have been doing. So I am very happy to hear folks are enjoying this new style.
Joshua: I like your videos wherever you post them, UA-cam, Photography Masterclass magazine, etc. I am also so glad you will be a presenter at next year’s Outsider Conference, I will be there!!! I was there this year and it is a great conference in a wonderful location.
You have never failed to deliver the goods and this video is no exception! Just the motivation I needed to start researching my next backpacking trip👏🏔
Josh, I want to thank you a lot for taking me to places I'm sure I'll never be at. In addition to being a great photographer, you are an extraordinary explorer. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil!
High-end in every way Josh! From production values, to the peaks surrounding you, to the leg-work put in just to get there and back, and most of all, to the photographs. The photos could get "lost" in everything else that is high-end here, but, as always, your photographs are truly tops. There is no way that this vid (as of today) only has 4.6k views. It should have 100 times that (your mom's refresh rate notwithstanding ;) The only thing I would like to suggest is not necessarily "tips" but a little more on how your scouting of a given composition develops. For the most part, in these vids you go from the "big picture" pan in the video to a bunch of gorgeous photos. It's the "in-between" those two poles that I would love to see: What first grabbed you for a given shot and how you honed in on the final composition. Awesome stuff Josh! Looking forward to more, and thank you for all you put into these for us.
An inspiring video for sure even though I am sure I will not make it to the Miter Basin. But, will certainly remember this one during my visit to Ediza this fall. Keep them coming! Already looking forward to #3.
Excellent video and images. I agree about backpacking...definitely food for the soul. In 10 days my wife and I are heading to the Olympics for 5 days of backpacking, I'm so excited. Keep up the great work Joshua.
@@JoshuaCrippsPhotography Well you seem like a good guy who appreciates life and the beauty of nature. And if she can (and is willing to) travel out there with you she must be pretty special. And what's more, she can take a great image, so even better!
Hi Josh. Fantastic video and just reward for all the hard miles and effort needed to put it together. The photos are stunning and an inspiration and the videos very insightful. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next instalment
Just watched your incredible 'Finding Paradise' video, subscribed, and was notified of this video. I returned from Kings Canyon again yesterday (second time in 8 days) and found that the beauty that lies beyond Roads End is where >99% of the majesty resides in solitude. The combination of back country footage, photography tips and just all around spectacular cinematography you have shared with us is truly impressive. Thank you for giving those of us who aren't so adventurous, and can't venture out quite so far, a glimpse of the marvelous land we share.
Hey Belal, welcome! isn't Kings Canyon astonishing? My favorite national park in the US. Thanks for the kind words on this video. So happy you enjoyed it! More to come.
Your photos of the basin certainly show it off nicely. I spent the better part of a week in the basin almost 20 years ago. I climbed up to Crabtree and Arc Passes and some of the other lakes in the basin. It was very nice to see this area again. I certainly encourage you to keep up the beautiful work.
What a great video and adventure! You've really outdone yourself this time, great production values, fantastic area to explore and photograph. The how-to videos are important but the videos like this are completely fantastic and inspiring.
I REALLY enjoy your videos, Josh. This is a great video. What an adventure you had! Excellent photos, as always. Please don’t wait so long for your next video.
Thank you so much Joshua! Loved your video, the education, the fun and stunning photography! Can’t wait to see more of your presentations. I have been the back country and have had a love affair with the Sierras for 50+ years now and at 71 still heading out for new adventures. Read about this place in a new book recently and was intrigued. Your photos really have upped that desire to be there. Is it pretty self explanatory once you get over New Army Pass
Welcome back Josh. Ive been having withdrawals from your absence. Great video as usual. I like this style of video more than a teaching one. Do what's easier for you so you can spend more time shooting images and making money
Cheers, Bob. Thanks for the encouragement! Ironically, these kinds of videos are much harder to do and make me less money. But they're more creatively satisfying, that's for sure!
Good one. Would have been hard to do much photography there if it would not have been for global warming. Couldn’t resist. Keep making these great videos.👍👍
Wonderful video, Josh. I appreciate the great deal of effort and work required to make this. But I feel like you love it! Thanks so much for sharing your explorations and superb photography. I've never done any overnight backpacking but watching this inspires me to do so.
Another great video. You have a way of presenting your story that makes it so interesting! I have always enjoyed your style of video but these newer ones are a notch above the rest. There is a place for the "tips" style too so I'm sure one or two sprinkled in would still be a good thing. Cheers
Great work, we just got back from Big Pine Basin, what beautiful country, thanks for sharing the other places in the Sierra’s I have not been to. Your photography is amazing, please keep it up. I look forward to each of your videos and I share them with my hiking and photo friends.
Joshua: you really are my favorite UA-cam channel, since I love the Sierra’s just like I can tell you do. I look forward to each of your videos and they make my day, week or month. I don’t get to explore the places you go or go out as much as you do, so I live through your adventures. Please keep them coming.
Always great to see your vids pop up on the tube. Great scenery & photos. Question , do you shoot a little under exposed or is it your style of processing your photos? They seem a little under what I see just before you show the finished photo. Great vid!
Awesome video with some epic footage. Top work here! Two question, if you have a minute. 1) Do you have (or, will have) a video about the gear you carry on multi-day backpacking trips? 2) Do you carry a battery charger, or?
Greetings from Oakland. Loved this video! As a Californian I especially love seeing videos and images from my ‘backyard’. I haven’t been to Sequoia/Kings Canyon in 7 or 8 years. I need to go back. Did you encounter any other backpackers? It seemed like you were in a pretty remote area. Thanks for a great video!
Gorgeous views and shots. Wish I could do those kind of hikes. There are different reasons why I can't two are asthma and bad arthritis in my knees and ankles
Thanks so much! Sorry to hear about your asthma and arthritis. One of the things I love about the Sierra is how accessible it can be. If you ever head out this way, send me an email and I can suggest some jaw-dropping places that are easily accessible. Take care!
Stunning landscapes and such an awesome inspirational video. I was just commenting on your Instagram that it’s been a while since your last video and was missing seeing the notification pop up. Now I see why! Worth the wait… Are you planning on heading out of the US (covid allowing) as part of the ‘Our Beautiful Planet’ series?
Thanks a ton, Andy. Really happy you popped by to watch this one. To answer your question, yes! My long term goal with this series is to pick up where Art Wolfe's show Travels to the Edge left off. I am staying domestic for now as I learn more about producing videos like this. But once I have things dialed in more I plan to launch a series with lots of international destinations.
Amazing video. Do you have a method of keeping track of the locations you find while scouting in remote areas like this? Some kind of GPS tracker to save the spot?
You look like you have your backpacking gear fairly dialed. You've made a video about what gear you take for a day hike, but I can't find anything focused on backpacking. As somebody who is struggling to get the weight out of my pack and still bring camera equipment, I'm interested to see your load out.
Hey Justin, you're right! I need to make a video about my backpacking kit. Really quick though, here's my basic setup: Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 4400 Pack (though I could probably get by with the 3400 as well) Thermarest NeoAir XTherm Pad Enlightened Equipment Custom Quilt (0°, max loft) Ridge Merino Base Layers FreeFly Apparel Sun Hoodie Patagonia Micro Puff Hooded Jacket Altra Lone Peak shoes Feetures socks Random wool beanie from New Zealand Sawyer Squeeze water filter Black Diamond Carbon Z Lite trekking poles BearVault (small) for trekking in the Sierra Nikon Z7 Mirrorless Camera + 3 lenses and some filters Lightweight tripod Cheers!

Try to short less than fifteen minutes
Love this style (and the 'X tips for...'). Well worth the effort in production. Thanks. Keep up the good/hard work.

Beautiful video. The scenery was spectacular and you got many great shots. Keep up the good work.
The Benny Hill of photography.. just 🙃 joking…. Always great to see your films
Haha, thank you!

Food for the soul, well said! Have a great time on your trip.
This was wonderfully presented. Also I loved the leaping-into-the-abyss shot. Amazing!
Thank you so much! Credit to my girlfriend for snagging that shot.

👍
I enjoyed this video. Great stuff makes me wanna get out there
