The halo show is a prime example of what lewis was talking about. Characters who are completely changed or removed to “relate to a wider audience”. They also added sex scenes and plots about the spartans discovering their emotions.

And that is the main reason why you should never bother writing about Master Chief and keep it in the games, and do it like forward unto dawn and sparingly. Him, and keep it an ODST or background Spartan team

The reaction Pyrion mentioned made me think of a comment someone from my work mentioned that personel aren’t allowed to talk negatively about the new operating system. But the system is so poorly implemented that people can’t do their jobs.
It’s like management sticking their heads in the sand and saying that it works fine 😂

Same shit with modders/emulators people will pester developers if things don't work perfectly and after a while a lot of them just stop because why the fuck should they, they spend hours after working for free and then have to deal with people like pyrion getting shitty for breaking a fucking rule.

There's so many examples of what Lewis is saying regarding TV shows and movies. Wheel of Time is a good one, however I still enjoyed the show for what it was. Rings for Power, the Halo tv show, the last three Star Wars movies. It even happens with games as well, the last few Halo games made by 343.
They are all examples of where a popular IP is handed over to a new team and that team then insists on putting their own shitty mark on the world, turning it into trash. What made Star Wars good was ruined by directors that totally changed the world to fit their view. The Halo TV show was an aborted fetus of a creation, because they took what is a _very_ well established story and fucking butchered it in every way. Halo has a series of books that are almost purpose made for a TV show or movie adaption, and they are totally ignored for the story made by producers that I can only assume never read them or even played a Halo game.
Every popular IP is doomed to have some future fan who has become a director getting their greasy hands on it and ruining the whole thing because they can't fucking help but shove their own awfdul fucking ideas into it unnecessarily.

I think The Last Of Us is one of the best possible adaptations, because everyone I know who's watching it is loving it. I haven't ever played the game and think it's amazing, my friends (some of whom have finished the first or both games) also think it's amazing.
After each episode (unless a section has 2 episodes) I look up the differences between the game and the TV show. I think all the changes and adaptations have been understandable from a TV show point of view, or sometimes even better than the original.
Episode 3 is possibly one of the best bits of TV I've ever seen and I'm so incredibly excited for the rest of the show (at time of writing, waiting for Episode 6).

      @lemon1797 Рік тому

For me, the last of us game franchise (Part I and Part II) is my favourite story of all time. I wasn't so sure about the series when it started, I felt like Bella Ramsey's performance wasn't quite there and Pedro Pascal didn't have the right accent. But after seeing 5 episodes, I absolutely love the show and can't believe how well it has been adapted.
Generally I'm very critical of movies/tv show adaptations but I feel this has truly come from a love and dedication to the source materials and that the original spirit of the games has been captured so well. I don't think anyone could top Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker as Ellie and Joel but what we have is better than I think any fan expected.
I totally agree with you that all the changes make perfect sense (bar some minor nitpicks) and that some changes are better than the original. I think EP 3 was a genius idea as it perfectly contrasts the toxic love that every relationship in the show has. In the game we never saw Bill and Frank together, and that section was used to show that Ellie has warmed up to Joel massively and does actually like him because of how much of a dick she was to Bill as opposed to Joel. The show does this by having her be a dick to Joel in the first couple episodes and showing that change to trust and affection in ones after. I think this was a perfect change and allowed EP 3 to be an artful look at healthy love in the apocalypse. EP 3 being the lowest rated in the series is a crime in my opinion.

In LotR, the time that Faramir tracked all the way back to Osgilliath is utter nonsense. AFTER they explained WHY they did that, you could understand why they did so, but they didn't have to do it that way, but they never asked me, did they, they just walked half way back to the White Tower and then half way back to the flipping DARK Tower.
If, instead, Faramir had had a soliloquy about how he was going to be welcomed and the ultimate warrior, and his daddy was going to love him, and how the chance was precious to him, while walking through to make the trek, walked by Gollum talking about "My Precious" and realised that even that brief glimpse was beginning to turn him, so best to help Frodo leave Faramir's presence ASAP, not only does their stated reason for the walking about get solved, they didn't have to walk the width of Gondor to do it.

The trouble is when you get great creative minds full of ideas and tell them to follow a pre-established story and script. It's bound to fail as they should Instead ask them to come up with the next chapter while production adapts the great IP to whatever media is being worked with. People love great stories as well as sharing them with others but it's hard to share a story when that story is being changed all the time to make a quick buck. It can seem over the top and hyperbole when fans crap on a product and call it ruined etc. but to many these stories are integral to their lives and development growing up - and messing with that naturally incures their wrath and I think that's completely justified when some of the people in charge of these productions clearly don't give a crap about the trash they're shovelling to fill in between ad-breaks for a paycheck.

The minority of people watching video game movies and stuff may be the ones that actually played the game, but the fact is still that they inform and influence the majority, so to disregard them is a horrific idea. If that minority is satisfied, I guarantee the majority will follow (mostly).

    Nuance, you forgot :D
First of all, wtf LotR are a "bad book"? It's a timeless classic, one of the best books ever written and if you dont like the descriptive style, especially of the early parts, that's entirely fine. Describing it as if it were objectively bad, "old" etc though? Come on.
Second, there have been people that went overboard with criticism with adaptation and there still are. Changes are necessary, you have to leave things out because of time, you have to change certain things because of the medium - an inner monologue works great in a book, not so well on screen - and yeah, film makers must be allowed to make an adaptation their own and not just copy.
Peter Jackson did a fantastic job overall and these movies are some of the best ever made. That doesnt fully shield him from any sensible criticism. The movies could have been better in some areas, in some details. It's easier to identify missed potential with comparison to the source material so people like me have done that over the years. Some points would be taste, some would please hardcore fans, some would be as good but give more depth - and some would just objectively improve the movies.
    Some examples:
Id prefer a less "jesus" Legolas that is more light hearted and less god-like in his abilities, as in the books. That's preference, not "better".
I think the movies would have been better without the wolf attack + Aragorn death fakeout in Two Towers. It isnt in the books and is needless (big action scene right after). It would allow more time for stuff left out for time.
Characters like Fangorn (Treebeard) and Faramir have been made significantly dumber in the movies, even adding run-time for Faramir to show stupid decisions (bringing the Hobbits to a war-torn city). To me, the movies would have had more depth if their decisionmaking skills were as good as in the books and the somewhat artificial drama wasnt added. It was dramatic enough without these changes.
Finally, some moments would have just improved the films, period. I dont know many people including casual fans of only the movies that dont find the last scene with the ghosts a bit lame. They come in like a deus ex machina and win the battle. The books had a much more satisfying and more epic end to that battle and it's a shame it was left out because while to me, the charge of the Rohirrim might be the single most epic moment in film, the end of the battle could have rivalled that.
-> in the books, the ghosts only help to chase the pirates from the ships and coast. Aragorn then gathers a bunch of Gondor soldiers in the south and sails to Minas Tirith. This wouldnt take more screen time, same as the ghost stuff usually takes. Id probably cut the fake out "we wont come... oh wait, we will" to get a few minutes later.
Then, as Aragorn arrives on the battlefield with a new army, an arrival scene could be made that'd about as cool as the riders of Rohan. But crucially, it'd allow to build the friendship Aragorn-Eomer. They have a chat earlier where Eomer laments that Aragorn is gonna leave, but is told by him that they would meet again even if "all the armies of Mordor stood between them". And thats exactly what happens, as Aragorn arrives from the south, Eomer from the north. They reunite on the battlefield. It'd make for an epic reunion scene and a cooler ending than...ghosts kill all orcs. A few extra minutes that could easily be spared in some earlier scenes.
