Okee Doke. Found this in a Doc Walker Tab chart while looking up Rocket Girl. I can't get through that song without a tear in my eye. SO NOW! Everyone gets to cry, Doc W, myself, some commenters and our couple in the video! Beautiful song. If you've loved for long, you've been the guy or girl in this song.
This is my favourite Del Amitri song. I thought this was a very beautiful cover, and a beautiful clip to go with it. Such a powerful song needs sensitivity and respect. This did it well.
Being a massive Del Amitri fan I think this is a good version of one of their great songs. This has more of a country feel than The Del’s version. Great job. Anyway, check out the plethora of other Del Amitri songs, they ( and Justin Currie’s solo songs) are brilliant.
A very good cover of a great song. With all due respect , "The Del's guy's name" is Justin Currie by the way. He is an amazing talent, who not only wrote this song , but wrote and performed many others of this caliber. The original version of this song is exceptional, both on CD and live in concert, as I had the privilege of seeing Del Amitri many times. We can debate what version is better, and although this C&W is good, I will take the originial any day of the week.
I love that he stayed true to the original, and if you're a country-sound fan this is great! But as a Del Amitri fan, the sound of this voice vs Currie.... it's too much change.... although ironically the story is perfect for country, lol!
Big fan of Del Amitri all the way back to Hatful of Rain etc....but this is not a horrifying rendition, in fact its excellent in my opinion. Just different.
So many artists have done versions of songs and literally ruined them. While others have taken a great song and captured the style and essence of the song while also putting their own signature and style on the song. I think this gentleman achieved that feat and deserves respect for this version.
I call Bulls**t. Amitri's version is good but (I am not a huge country fan) Doc Walker should be given due credit. His song is great and allowed people to understand that it was written by Del Amitri. I personally think that REALLY you should give Doc's version a closer listen instead of tearing it down. It's outstanding.; Good job, Doc and for the rest of you that think I'm full of krap - ask me if I care - just telling it the way it REALLY is. I could pooh poh on this too because it's REALLY COOL to tear down everything these days but I ain't gonna. Doc deserves a little lovin' on this one - DESERVING. Real nice job .
Kevin Vogen I've always thought the Dels should've been marketed as a country band... SO MANY of their songs could've been country songs... just my opinion...
This is my favourite Del Amitri song. I've never heard of Doc Walker before, but this is a pretty good cover of Driving With the Brakes On and he has a good voice. However, I prefer Del Amitri's version and Justin Currie's voice, which has more passion and feeling.
I think both versions have their quality. This one is has more mainstream appeal - it's a toe-tapping country song, and I like that they deliberately put their own style on it. I also like the harmony of their voices on it. Also, by remaking it, they've put some focus on the song and people can find the original all over again. The original is very raw, and really captures the emotion of the couple that are at the centre of the story. Justin Currie has an incredible amount of talent!
I like this cover version. For it is not merely a blueprint of the original song but adds a little bit of own interpretation. One should honor that and reflect that each cover makes a bow to the original. Only good things attract others to copy or cover them. So I am a huge fan of Del Amitri and Justin Currie, but I can live very well with this more country like version. It is really a bit too fast and it misses the languorous sadness of Justins original but it is also well sung, well played and entertains me, gives me a good time. What else should music do at the bottom line?
I have not heard the original version of this song but in my experience the country sound conveys more emotion many times than any other genre. Just listening to this version which is the only version I know, I find the lyrics strong enough to carry the song and reach out to others. It could well be that this should not have been remade but this song could not have been a huge hit that was above being covered. For you Edwards I am sorry but for most of us it is not that big of a deal.
I'm glad no-one does this song like Doc Walker. I think he has a great voice, but this version is definitely to upbeat for the subject of the song and therefore the song loses it's soul.
I prefer Doc Walker's version. The harmonies are haunting, and harmonies are what make Doc Walker magical. I agree with those who've already mentioned that this song was meant to be country. Justin Currie did write a beautiful song, though.
Del Amitri / Justin Currie, what a great band, a great band is one that when you listen to the songs time after after they still are relevant and strike a chords. Cheers
This is phantastic!!!! I am a big fan of Del Amitri, I have seen them play this song, the original, and their version is one of my favourite songs. Listening to this brought tears to my eyes. Very good.
@wolfe1008 Don't agree, the video is a visual interpretation of the lyrics. I feel that it should represent the guy being led on a journey that he has no control over. ( i.e HER body, Her Kid, HER decision ,.. so all he can do is hang on ). The idea that he then has contorl of the car contradicts this.
Lovin this version of a seriously brilliant song... The original Del Amitri version and this are quite difficult to compare due to their different styles, this is a tad soulless in comparison to the original which really takes you into the song and the emotion of the situation it portrays, to the point you can imagine Currie recording it during the actual event to which it relates ... this sounds like the cover version that it is .. I still quite like it though....
It's just a metter of your personal taste to take which version is better. I like them both. It's no use to judge God's way of acting through His creatures
@wolfe1008 Of course he does.. listen to the song. "She's got the wheel", "steering on." The whole song is a abou ta journey after a hard decision.. Seriously ??
Very good version and I love country music, but have you actually listened to the lyrics of this song? It's about the termination of a baby, the way it's portrayed in the original is why the song is what it is.. the upbeat and happy aspect of this rendition just doesn't do justice to the meaning of the song. It's like doing a hip hop version of tears in heaven.
@clembo yea i know the other guy said before that the video was messed up because it said shes got the wheel so he thought the girl was driving but the guy was driving in the video. so i was telling him no that the song video is wright that the girl was steering the convo not the car. if you read further down you would have known that.
@wolfe1008 It was essential that this "women driving" magic is strictly a metaphor within the song. If the mood of the song was actually a woman driving then I couldn't imagine an orchestra of nails of chalkboards obnoxious enough to emulate the experience.
Even if your talking about 'she's got the wheel' in terms of steering the relationship - the visiual interpretation portrayed in the video doesn't support the 'control' that she is mean to have.
I have watched both versions and I think I prefer the smoothed out countrified version. And this is not a Stupid American the band is CANADIAN. Is it so Soulful? Yes, but that is the style i prefere if i wanted to listen to Up down and intended Disonance I would listen to my NIN Albums.
Damn song still gets me. This came out when I had my first break up lol I’m turning 32 and still gets me right in the feelers. Lmao such a good song
Okee Doke. Found this in a Doc Walker Tab chart while looking up Rocket Girl. I can't get through that song without a tear in my eye. SO NOW! Thank goodness somebody else knows how good a song writer Justin Currie is. Countrified or not...it's a great song.
This is my favourite Del Amitri song. I thought this was a very beautiful cover, and a beautiful clip to go with it. Such a powerful song needs sensitivity and respect. This did it well.
sophielou76 mine too
I just found out that this was a cover. I will always think of this as a Doc Walker song
Being a massive Del Amitri fan I think this is a good version of one of their great songs. This has more of a country feel than The Del’s version. Great job.
Anyway, check out the plethora of other Del Amitri songs, they ( and Justin Currie’s solo songs) are brilliant.
Damn! Great old song by Justin Currie (Del Amitri). Sounds great in the country style too!
A very good cover of a great song. With all due respect , "The Del's guy's name" is Justin Currie by the way. Great song, great voice, thank you Manitoba, from Alberta
I've listened to both versions and both are great, but I'm a big fan of harmonies and of country music, so I prefer the Doc Walker version.
Best Canada band!!
I think both versions of the song are amazing and I'm just going to enjoy the music
I love both versions and it is a tribute to have someone cover your music, awesome job!
So many artists have done versions of songs and literally ruined them. While others have taken a great song and captured the style and essence of the song while also putting their own signature and style on the song. I think this gentleman achieved that feat and deserves respect for this version.

I LOVE this song, and have got to say how much better Chris looks with short hair and less scruff now, but I still love the band no matter what!

Best version! Great cover!

I LOVE this song, and have got to say how much better Chris looks with short hair now, but I still love the band no matter what!
Not everybody has heard Amitri's version....this is absolutely Superb!!!
+Lisa Fonseca Amitri's version is 1,000,000 times better.
I like this one better. I love his voice!
The fact is this is a great song, both versions! Just depends what mood your in as to which is better
The original artist is Del Amitri - written by Justin Currie
this is my favorite doc walker song

Great song! I don,t why we don,t see them anymore🤔
Nobody does this song like Doc Walker!!!
I'm glad no-one does this song like Doc Walker. I think he has a great voice, but this version is definitely to upbeat for the subject of the song and therefore the song loses it's soul.

I get to see the boys live for the first time on Oct 13 in Kingston...cant wait!!!
I prefer Doc Walker's version. The harmonies are haunting, and harmonies are what make Doc Walker magical. I agree with those who've already mentioned that this song was meant to be country. Justin Currie did write a beautiful song, though.
😄I'm very pls to know I'm not the only one that loves😍 the song but when last did you play it.
Del Amitri / Justin Currie, what a great band, a great band is one that when you listen to the songs time after after they still are relevant and strike a chords. Cheers

I am a big fan of Del Amitri, I have seen them play this song, the original, and their version is one of my favourite songs.
Listening to this brought tears to my eyes. Very good.

A really nice cover of a great song!
If you can see the boys live....GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fav song...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great band coming out of lil Prairie Manitoba.
great version, lovely moody video
Fatal flaw Mr Director.. when he sings "But she's got the wheel".. the guy is driving in the video.
Bad times.. bad times, indeed.
Great version of a Del Amitri classic
I'm very pls to know I'm not the only one that loves😍 the song but when last did you play it.
Haha so am I! Can't wait till they come to Saint John!!!
@wolfe1008
Don't agree, the video is a visual interpretation of the lyrics.

Always thought Del music would sound good as country...
Thank you for saying that. I agree with you 100%.
SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm very pls to know I'm not the only one that loves😍 the song but when last did you play it
yeah yeah i keep listen to it

I too have listened to both I prefer this version although Del Amitri has a different tone
Soy de argentina y la escuchamos para bailar americano
Lovin this version of a seriously brilliant song... My FAV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One has to know the subject matter of the song to make a worthwhile comment.
It's just a metter of your personal taste to take which version is better. I like them both. It's no use to judge God's way of acting through His creatures
think you might have spelt brakes wrong... still a great song and thanks for putting it up
Brake are working again! Here a quarter back!!!! :)
@MrEdcrowley100 The song 'Driving with the Brakes on' is about a couple returning from an abortion clinic after terminating their childs life.
Is that Justin doing a cameo back by the trailer? I can't decide.
@wolfe1008 Of course he does.. listen to the song. "She's got the wheel", "steering on." The whole song is a abou ta journey after a hard decision..
Seriously ??
I was just about to say that...but then I figured I'd check the other posts to make sure I wasn't repeating anything...
I like it.
Me encanta esta canción alguien me podría decir como se llama y traducirla al castellano
Manejando con los frenos puestos . . .
Good version of the Del Amitri original, very relaxing.
This is a cover of a Del Amitri song.
acording to google writer is Justin Currie
I agree. You don't get the intensity of the song with this version that you do with Del Amitri's.
OK why isnt Chris from Doc walker hasnt been named the most sexiest man ALIVE because he IS WOW I LOVE HIM
Good Luck 101.
Very good version and I love country music, but have you actually listened to the lyrics of this song? It's like doing a hip hop version of tears in heaven.
....no...it's not....
like but original always best
My only criticism of Doc . .is how come there is not a decent video of "Call me a fool" on here ? That is my fav of yours :-)
good version not a patch on the original tho tut tut and thrice tut
@clembo yea i know the other guy said before that the video was messed up because it said shes got the wheel so he thought the girl was driving but the guy was driving in the video. so i was telling him no that the song video is wright that the girl was steering the convo not the car. if you read further down you would have known that.
Who is the woman? Sure I recognise her from somewhere....
it is.. "and the kid is gone"
@wolfe1008
It was essential that this "women driving" magic is strictly a metaphor within the song. If the mood of the song was actually a woman driving then I couldn't imagine an orchestra of nails of chalkboards obnoxious enough to emulate the experience.
dancing
Even if your talking about 'she's got the wheel' in terms of steering the relationship - the visiual interpretation portrayed in the video doesn't support the 'control' that she is mean to have.
A nice version but all it makes me want to do is put on the original
@cheeserockfan
ok.. well we all have our own opinions..
cheeserockfan... uhm when he says shes got the wheel.. he doesnt mean that she actually has the wheel as in driving the car...
I have watched both versions and I think I prefer the smoothed out countrified version. And this is not a Stupid American the band is CANADIAN. Is it so Soulful? Yes, but that is the style i prefere if i wanted to listen to Up down and intended Disonance I would listen to my NIN Albums.
a great song who ever singsit except simon mace
Maybe its because we like good music!
There from portage la prairie not nebraska LOL
And another thing: I am not sure this guy is even an actual doctor. ;-)
This version is just too upbeat for me. It makes a great country song but it needs to be slowed down some.
I like country I love del amitri but this is phish all the the soul out of the song as gone please do yourself a favour and stick or heed in a chanti!
So wrong
