Elemental battlegrounds shaped my love for fighting games.
I was a bit young at that time and I remember having to play the zombie version because my mom didn't like the idea of fighting players. I tried to argue so much by saying "I'm not fighting people in real life! Those are just their avatars that they control!"

The coolest thing about elemental battlegrounds is that the creators went on to create blox fruits, one of the most iconic modern roblox games.

the first game I ever played when i got my account in 2017. Still awesome.
I played elemental battlegrounds as my first battlegrounds game. This brought back memories, and trauma of not getting pastmthe main elements.

Oldest battleground game I know of, is called "One Piece Name 2"
I think there was a revival of this game somewhere out there, since the original game got "accidentally" taken down by a BAD update of Roblox.
You should look out for it and play, the game was absolutely broken, and this is what made it fun.

Sadly its not perfect. Gomu was the funniest thing in the old game but in the remake it doesn't function properly.

Black magic is great, currently there is a sequel of it, and it is INCREDIBLE

Not the oldest. As people in the comments have pointed out, EBG is actually a remake of Elemental Wars, which is an even older game.
You and many other people seem to say something is a battlegrounds game if it has said battlegrounds in the title; but this isn't functionally one at all. After all, it's just an umbrella term for close-quarters fighting games.
If you include this as a "Battlegrounds" game, you might as well include games like Online Fighting as ones aswell.
