Jody over at JOMW did a good video on these watches, the many places you can buy, and why not to get wrapped around the axle re: what is a "knockoff" or not.
Bought mine at Long Island Watch for the assurance of a quality seller. I was confident that Marc would figure out which iterations of the Seagull 1963 were from makers with the right historic provenance and more importantly stand behind it if there was a production quality issue. Chinese online sellers can be spotty.
They all come from the same factories in China. I love and have collected these watches for years and there is no difference between a 300-500 watch and one you get for 100-150......absolutely none. Some sellers buy in bulk from the factory and sell cheaper to get quick sales, some sellers buy less pieces pay more at source and try sell at ridiculously elevated prices. All the same watches though. Marc just sold you a watch you could have purchased from Aliexpress for half the price, end result? same watch.
Simply the best value mechanical chronograph, nothing even comes close. They come in many sizes 38 , 40 , 42. With or with out sapphire crystal, many different colours available. The one to go for in my opinion is the original 38mm with the heavily domed acrylic glass. Best place to buy is on ebay but check the sellers feedback history. Average price is about $225
Got mine from Long Island Watch. Handwinding, 38 mm with sapphire crystal. Put mine on a Hadley Roma leather/canvas strap. Every time I think of selling it one of these positive reviews pops up.
I am an American and I live in China . Basically there are some companies like Red Star and Sugess that have the rights to use the seagull st1901 movement and for years now they have been manufacturing this “homage” watch “seagull 1963” . They come in different sizes and have a clear back option. Recently the company “Sea-Gull” decided to make their “official” version. That has slight differences and an engrave back only , and only in 38mm. They send them with a QR code that proves “authenticity” . But those cost around $500 dollars for international market but They are sold in China for around $800 to the local market. It’s strange haha. Basically the movement is the same. And design is pretty much the same . Most people have these red star , sugess , and HKED variants .
I have the 38mm version of the same exact 1963, came with the same two straps (I wear it on the leather which makes it much easier to see that lovely movement), the same identification cards as the one you displayed. I paid $138 on Ali Express. It is a charming watch, beautifully finished, details all look perfect under a loupe - nothing to complain about for a mechanical chronograph at that price.
I have this excact 40mm sapphire 1963, by the same maker, for over a year now, and it's a really nice watch! I wear it on my rotation, at least once a week, without problem so far!
Hello Rob, the Seagull does come in the 38 & 42 most. I had a 38mm but replaced it with a 40mm for my 7.5" wrist and love it. I just didn't get hung up on it's manufacturer and enjoy it in my rotation. I put it on a leather oxblood leather strap and it punches way above it's price point....
Coincidentally Rob I’m wearing my Seagull 1963 now. I bought the 38mm with plexiglass crystal & solid case back which is more authentic or sympathetic to the original. Keeps fantastic time, has that beautiful mechanical tick & looks great!👍🏻😎
The safest way to get one of these is to buy it from Marc at Long Island Watch. Cannot recommend LIW enough. And the one to get is the one with the swan's neck regulator.
The chrono is $144 USD and a free strap before any sales on Aliexpress. Likely Cheaper on the 11.11 sale. Shipping to Atlantic Canada is about 2 weeks, give or take.
Looks really big for a 40, like the 42. Now I wonder if I should go for the 38 instead. DId you measure the dimensions to make sure? :) Hoping the 40 isn't actually that big.
The 40 does wear big - especially the acrylic crystal variant (the sapphire crystal uses a larger bezel). I have an 8“ + wrist and I'd find a 42mm too big for my tastes.
@@RanmaSaotome12 Yeah. I have friends with a 7“ wrist that find the 38mm wears well. The lug to lug is 47mm (from memory, you may wanna double check that...) so you get some presence from the length as well. ✌🏼️
You’ve highlighted the same problem I’ve found when trying to purchase this watch…they’re all different. One of the main things I’ve noticed is the Chinese script above the 6 varies, but most obvious is a mismatch of the sub dial handset. Example: on your watch in the video they are matched. In your link to Amazon, they are not. I can never buy in confidence that I’m getting the same watch as shown. I think all the copies have diluted the reputation. But I still want one!
I have the 38mm version with sapphire. The sub dial hands match like the one in the video here. I found it on Ali about a year ago. It runs great but I just don’t wear it enough. I’m thinking of throwing it up on eBay or something.
I bought one on AliExpress. It was a complete lemon. Never wound correctly and ultimately died entirely. Sold it off for pennies on the dollar just to get it out of my house. That experience put me off that whole portion of the market.
I bought one of these super cheap on Ali a while back, turns out it was the same manufacturer as yours. Mine is the 38 with sapphire as well, but I noticed mine has the 3 atm rating on the back where yours says "Plan B" - wonder what that means? Interestingly mine doesn't have great specs though, it's running about 20 secs slow per day which isn't terrible for the price but not as nice as yours!
Love the st1901 based chronographs, I think they are a great value. I don't particularly care about which manufacturer is more authentic, I don't think it makes much of a difference in the end, I look at what's esthetically pleasing. There are a ton of sellers on aliexpress with in incredible variety of styles although you have to switch up keywords when searching to find them all. I'll search for st1901, sugess, merkur, gull tron and seagull. I'm looking to buy one in the future and leaning towards the sugess with the 70's styled dial and hands with a lightning bolt chronograph hand, the merkur big eye or the gull tron that looks like the Hamilton intra-matic. Only odd thing about the gulltron is not only did they copy the look of the Hamilton they also left the Hamilton logo on the dial which looks odd with the name. Either way I think they will all preform pretty much the same and I don't think the manufacturer really adds any value to the watch.
Anyone who buys these should already know that these are not from the original factory or "company" which do not make them currently. If they were originals or even the limited reissue, the prices would be ridiculous for them. These are most of the time great watches and good reproductions of the original prototype. There is a stigma among watch enthusiasts that original watches are of better quality and that is definitely not the case in this situation. Personally, for me, it's amusing to wear a chinese copy of a chinese watch.
Got the same 42 like yours, I like it much actually, great value for the price, but mine is 14s above per day. I didn't buy it for its accuracy anyway 🤷♂️
@@josepmariaaguascaribot9239 I got the 38, sapphire almost 2 years ago, paid $175 ,from Ebay. I wore it almost everyday for six months still running great at the moment, +2,+5 sec/day. Can't complain at this price point.
confirmed: merkur watches. they sometimes come out with amazing pieces like the merkur conqueror that I missed out of course as they sold out pretty fast they were better sized and cheaper than the laurel
Nobody knows when they buy these seagull 63's if they legit sort of speak. But other videos say hey it's a solid watch I've seen them on Ali Express with different style dials. I'm torn buying thus or a Zeppelin maybe both 🤔
I've got one of these from a company called Segues I think that's how you spell it 38 mm with plastic Christal and see through case back it runs and keeps time we'll paid $189 . Great little watch .

Ali Express has these all day long in all the dials and range from $100 to $600.

I liked it so much I had to do some digging. The 3hander is called a merkur first army watch.

Officially Seagull shop. Easy.
