  • We stopped following the CMEC's curriculum (though we still use some of their resources; just not their pacing, all of their books, or scope) and I chose some curriculum based on Charlotte Mason's principles. I've sought to give my children a wide feast of living books and good, true, and beautiful ideas. We are Christian homeschoolers who hold to the Charlotte Mason ideals, but I seek to make her principles realistic and sustainable for the every day Charlotte Mason homeschooler.

I just love seeing others booklists. BFB has such great books! As someone who creates her own family feast for education, it's exciting to see more mamas stepping out to find confidence to educate their individual little persons. Its important to know our children and working it out for our family needs.

I am so glad you made this video. We are also a Charlotte Mason Family. Glad you reviewed Generations as a conversational text for science. Thank you!!!

We do go outside and we even tent camp in places that only have outhouses but we're not super natury kinda people. So alot of CM science at the younger years was nature related. We just pick up books from the library that we find interesting to learn about. So happen to be learning about plants right now.

America, love that you are sharing your gentle and rich approach to CM curriculum. I hope that it is blessing you and your learners 💕We are planning BF Early American history (probably slowly for 2 years) 💕 gently reading through Abraham Lincoln per L’s request - found the picture book at a used bookstore :)
This makes me excited to get going in the fall.
Looking forward to looking into the science you’ve shared - I’ve not heard of it before. I was on the fence about Sonlight science (not really my style but it felt fuller and include a hand on kit)…my kid has been asking so much about weather for months, I don’t want to wait until she is much older before we dive deeper into the subject…
We are doing the Simply Charlotte Mason approach to Bible verse review using our visual memory statement cards for Gentle Classical Press and some from Truth78 (just pre readers over here so the visuals queues are vital) and I think it is so helpful (and simple)!
Also felt encouraged that you are reading directly through Scripture with your children, I think you shared in a previous video, I’ve felt a pull to lean into direct Scripture reading as our main source ❤

And I totally understand what you mean about science. They just seem to have a natural interest beyond nature study, and if there are gentle and conversational resources available, why not let them enjoy them? 😌

I love the things you shared. We use blue manor academy but honestly I’m so eclectic and we love Charlotte Mason and living books. Love that you’re doing what works for your family and look forward to hearing more. It feels good to hear from other moms in the same boat.

Thanks for your message! I've never heard of Blue Manor Academy! What a privilege it is for us to be able to have all of these resources at our fingertips, and Charlotte Mason's principles to guide it all! Thank you for watching & for your feedback! 🌷

Btw , similar books like Child's Garden of Verses, Blue Fairy Book etc are also on the Y1 list in AO. So in the future after your membership with CMEC is over if you want a book list you can go there :)

Thank you, thank you for making this video! I feel you may be on track by thoughtfully constructing your curriculum from a variety of sources.
I have been researching the CMEC and a few other Charlotte Mason curriculums, but they felt too much of an ideology than maybe what CM might have intended? I have heard people say, and agree, that CM would have chosen more modern texts for her own students with regard to some subjects, BUT this is the first time I’ve seem someone follow that thought by saying “and so here’s what I’ve done.”
Thanks for sharing your endeavor to apply CM principles to books and curriculum that sit right for you as you apply your thinking love to educating your children. (I too think I would love a little science beyond Nature Study in the early years! Im SO glad someone said that. It truly is so fascinating and why not be part of the feast.)
Thanks again for your video and for sharing how you plan to go about this next year. Please update with how you felt it went and how you might tweak or change your plans! All the best!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! It has been very enjoyable to craft a curriculum that honors Mason's principles, as well as considers my children as whole persons (in the sense that a prescribed curriculum may not fit their needs right now).
I agree with what you're saying about some of the CM curriculums. I think that may be what some mother-teachers need, but it felt a tad "legalistic" to me, and almost like a burden. Building my own curriculum while still adhering to the most important Mason principles (in my opinion) has been such a joy and very freeing! I feel that it has embodied the idea of a mother's thinking love for me, as you said 😌
Thanks for watching and for all of your kind words!

I did not! I have them narrate instead of using a workbook. My friend uses the workbooks and she has said that there are "experiments" and object lessons within the workbook, so that could almost tempt me to use it!

Hi! We’re using Beautiful Feet History - Early American History for grades k-2. You can find their specific book list on their site - it’s a wonderful list! They include books from indigenous perspectives and slave perspectives rather than just the victors’ perspectives.

I really enjoyed this video, thank you for making it!!! I've been considering BF early American history for the next year because I am also journeying on my own CM approach path.
But I've recently watched a review video from another homeschooling mom who claimed that although she enjoyed most of BF's books, she found the "Child's first book of American History" be very derogatory toward Native Americans. I find it heartening that you enjoyed the multiple perspectives of the books. I'm looking for a history curriculum that's balanced in that way, but most certainly not woke. Would you share your thoughts on the "children's first" book?
