Many of the reasons people choose to leave Islam is due to a lack of knowledge, or misunderstanding, cultural issues, influence from the western media& culture. This isn't a light matter.. it is one upon which your salvation depends. Do not be hasty in making a decision based on a perception of reality that may not be based on truth.
Sometimes Westerners feel the emotional need of strict structure and discipline due to the sea of liberality and freedom that they never fought or worked for. This is why I think some people end up gravitating to Islam. Many westerners have excessive levels of liberality but little to no discipline/structure in their life, therefore they crave some sort of structure to give themselves meaning and see Islam is means of getting it... but many deconvert later when they discover or experience the dark side of it.

I live in Canada and have met many people who came to study at my university for grad school, especially from Iran. They have all left Islam. One common thing that I found among them was that they were educated, rational, and all have read and were familiar with the Islamic sources (especially the women), and a bit of Islamic history. Most average Muslims that I meet have only read the Quran, know a few nice hadiths, and instead of actual history only know the standard narrative.
Iranians want to be associated with Europeans (not Palestinians and Pakistanis). Bangladeshis, Malians, Pakistanis, Sudanese want to be associated with Arabians, Persians and Turkish.
I would say that the Iranians have a glorious history and cultural identity of their own to be very proud of. No need to associate with anyone.@@user-k4d-e59mo28oc
Iranians aren’t originally muslims. Islam was brought to Iran (formerly Persia) by the Arab invaders. Islam was basically forced upon the Persians. Iran had a very rich culture and history before Islam, Iranians are very proud of this.

The Egyptians at that time weren't Arab. They became Arab because they were forced to. The people of the Levant weren't Arab either. I've a friend in Canada and I think one of the reasons why she is still a believer is because she does not question or think about her religion , she just goes along with the practices etc and if you try to convince her otherwise she just puts her fingers in her ears and goes la la la! Very sad.

This makes a lot of sense to me now, i was trying to understand islam scriptures, but when i asked religious muslims, they got angry at me for asking questions and some threatened violence. They didn't even want me to say their scripture out loud like it was a secret or something....

It began for me when I read Quran and Hadith and studied them deeply. I rejected some but I still want to believe in the others. But as time goes, the verses just does not make sense to me. It just does not make sense that a God, the realization of this Ultimate Being with Best Wisdom and Intelligence, cannot even be at par with my own intelligence. That's the turning point. Honestly, the Qur'an is written by Iraqi people close 150 years after prophet Muhammad's died. The god of muslims is only obsessed with females and sex. Same here. I grew up in islam family. But in mine teen years it did not speak to me, if ever. I do believe in God just dont want to follow any religion. God is god, he is not religios. I have been free ever since. My family does not know but i live my own life.

I am a Christian and a physicist. The contradictions do not pose a major problem to me because the West has developed a long tradition of interpreting the Bible in the light of new knowledge. I could never be a Muslim, even though I have limited knowledge of Islam. Why am I like this? I also have limited knowledge of hard drugs because I've never tried any. But I know what drugs do to the people who use them. That is shocking! And I also see what Islam does to the people who follow it. It's becoming clearer and more obvious.

I left when I was 19, I'm 33 now. For me it was learning about pre history before civilizations existed. Understanding that Islam was something humans created 1400 years ago. Understanding that if I was born into a different tribe or culture I would have been something else. So it only made logical sense to not to believe in any religion. I left Christianity when I was 12. It did not make any sense to me. Whenever I asked questions I got nonsense answers or was told to shut up. That was 64 years ago. I have been an atheist all that time.
It is the internet and social media that is educating young people to leave islam in there droves . in the US and Canada 24% of young people are leaving Islam . 15 years ago it was unheard of to hear of muslim apostates now they are everywhere on the internet . And these muslim apostates are passionate about encouraging others to leave . in another 15 years , it is likely that young people will feel embarrassed to admit they are muslim , much like many young people are embarrassed these days to admit they are Christian.
It is much easier to become educated, open minded and leave Islam in the West. However, it's also going on in Islamic countries! Look at the religious demographics. UAE & Qatar are both 2/3 Islamic. Turkey youth is extremely irreligious and many of them don’t believe in Islam anymore. Iran, a country that is 99% Muslim on paper, isn’t even majority Islamic anymore with only 40% of Iranians identify as Muslim (less so for the younger population, and look at the massive protests against Islam there!). In Indonesia, which doesn't follow Sharia apostasy laws, ~30% of Muslims (200 million people) have left Islam. The well-known imam Yusuf Qaradawi said that Islam would never survive without enforcing apostasy laws. Also, majority of people who convert to Islam aren’t seriously religious, they don’t read the Quran, go to Mosque, or pray 5 times a day. Majority of Islamic converts leave the religion after 2-3 years according to surveys. The well-known Mufti Menk says that Islam is the religion of largest number of defectors. But christianity is far better than islam. Quite many christian churches support lgb rights for marriages ar least perfofm by state. In islam such support almost not exist, because islam is totalitarian ideology. In christianity we have church and state apart so no one can forbade same sex marriages, if base on christianity which base on Jesus teachings.
Part of the problem is that we view islam as a religion, it's not just a religion. Islam is a totalitarian sociopolitical and economic sistem, with a religious component, in fact the religious aspect of Islam is minor compared with its other components . Islam is a political framework for managing all mankind's affairs. Islam is Firstly about ownership, then about GOVERNMENT, thirdly about administrative authority, subordination, dominance, doctrine, ideology, tradition, and finally also RELIGION, justice and answerability come last in the Islamic law. Its not my opinion,it's the Islamic scholars that say so. Islamic scholars themselves label islam as a "Deen". (look it up) Karl popper's paradox of tolerance comes to mind. A free society cannot remain free if it tolerates those who will not tolerate the behavior of others. The West in general can be considered "free"(although it really is not) compared to islamism.

Unfortunately for the time being, many people don’t apply themselves or their intellect to get to the point where they question religions, be it others or the one(s) that they’ve identified with. In my general experience, people who leave religions through that active effort are some of the most levelheaded and kindhearted people I know. Ex-Muslims in particular are inspirational, perhaps because of a selection process that demands so many layers of critical reflection, particularly in “Western countries,” where there are many complex social pressures and dynamics at play.
Ex-Muslims speaking out are some of the most truly brave and authentic people we hear from today. It is essential that their voices be heard and shared until speaking out is no longer a fearful thing.

I am currently talking with a hard nosed muslim, and it is difficult as he insists the quran is perfect and won't question it and yet all other sources like science, and Bible are supposed to be questioned. I've mentioned the historical and factual inaccuracies and he has gone literally out of his way and out of reasoning to justify them even LYING to me about information. He rejects scientific facts that are wrong and tries in vain to say its my interpretation or I am not understanding the Arabic. Anyway true religion should not have these scientific error, factual errors, and historical errors. I know you are leaving much and risking death leaving Islam. I will pray for you all. Just know you have friends among the Christians. PS: one of the biggest factual and historic errors in the quran confuses Mary mother of Jesus with being the Miriam sister of Moses and Aaron. The reason why some people are afraid of hard questions is because hard questions can be intimidating, especially when they suspect or know you are scrutinizing or critiquing their beliefs. People (of most, if not all religions or viewpoints) can get defensive if you attack or critique their foundational beliefs. This can be due to the fear of their own foundations crumbling beneath them &or also pride. If one values truth, one should seek to understand reality.

Thanks for this intersting overview. It is remarkable that a degree in science/STEM plays such a prominent role. I also have a degree in science, and contradictions between Christian theology and science also contributed to me leaving my traditional Christian faith. I remember that in my youth one of the issues I could not get is why humans should have an immortal soul, but not animals. This concept combined with my knowledge about human evolution would have meant that once in human evolution there would have been an animal (pre-human, no soul) mother giving birth to a human with an immortal soul. To me this view was so obviously wrong that I was forced to decide to abandon either science/evolution or Christianity. I guess this contradiction also is the reason why both Christian and Muslim apologists argue heavily against evolution. This scientific knowledge theatens their world view in its core.

Sometimes Westerners feel the emotional need of strict structure and discipline due to the sea of liberality and freedom that they never fought or worked for. This is why I think some people end up gravitating to Islam. I live in Canada and have met many people who came to study at my university for grad school, especially from Iran. They have all left Islam. One common thing that I found among them was that they were educated, rational, and all have read and were familiar with the Islamic sources (especially the women), and a bit of Islamic history. Most average Muslims that I meet have only read the Quran, know a few nice hadiths, and instead of actual history only know the standard narrative.
Iranians want to be associated with Europeans (not Palestinians and Pakistanis).
Bangladeshis, Malians, Pakistanis, Sudanese want to be associated with Arabians, Persians and Turkish.
Well... It's because: if you read the Quran you become muslim BUT if you really understand Quran you inevitably become antislam.

Iranians aren’t originally muslims. Islam was brought to Iran (formerly Persia) by the Arab invaders. Islam was basically forced upon the Persians. Iran had a very rich culture and history before Islam, Iranians are very proud of this.

This makes a lot of sense to me now, i was trying to understand islam scriptures, but when i asked religious muslims, they got angry at me for asking questions and some threatened violence. They didn't even want me to say their scripture out loud like it was a secret or something....

I am a Christian and a physicist. The contradictions do not pose a major problem to me because the West has developed a long tradition of interpreting the Bible in the light of new knowledge. I could never be a Muslim, even though I have limited knowledge of Islam. Why am I like this? I also have limited knowledge of hard drugs because I've never tried any. But I know what drugs do to the people who use them. That is shocking! And I also see what Islam does to the people who follow it. It's becoming clearer and more obvious.

I left when I was 19, I'm 33 now. For me it was learning about pre history before civilizations existed. Understanding that Islam was something humans created 1400 years ago. Understanding that if I was born into a different tribe or culture I would have been something else. So it only made logical sense to not to believe in any religion. I left Christianity when I was 12. It did not make any sense to me. Whenever I asked questions I got nonsense answers or was told to shut up. That was 64 years ago. I have been an atheist all that time.
It is the internet and social media that is educating young people to leave islam in there droves . in the US and Canada 24% of young people are leaving Islam .
15 years ago it was unheard of to hear of muslim apostates now they are everywhere on the internet . And these muslim apostates are passionate about encouraging others to leave .

It is much easier to become educated, open minded and leave Islam in the West. However, it's also going on in Islamic countries! Look at the religious demographics. UAE & Qatar are both 2/3 Islamic. Turkey youth is extremely irreligious and many of them don’t believe in Islam anymore. Iran, a country that is 99% Muslim on paper, isn’t even majority Islamic anymore with only 40% of Iranians identify as Muslim (less so for the younger population, and look at the massive protests against Islam there!). In Indonesia, which doesn't follow Sharia apostasy laws, ~30% of Muslims (200 million people) have left Islam. The well-known imam Yusuf Qaradawi said that Islam would never survive without enforcing apostasy laws. Also, majority of people who convert to Islam aren’t seriously religious, they don’t read the Quran, go to Mosque, or pray 5 times a day. Majority of Islamic converts leave the religion after 2-3 years according to surveys. The well-known Mufti Menk says that Islam is the religion of largest number of defectors.

But christianity is far better than islam. Quite many christian churches support lgb rights for marriages ar least perfofm by state. In islam such support almost not exist, because islam is totalitarian ideology. In christianity we have church and state apart so no one can forbade same sex marriages, if base on christianity which base on Jesus teachings.

Unfortunately for the time being, many people don’t apply themselves or their intellect to get to the point where they question religions, be it others or the one(s) that they’ve identified with. In my general experience, people who leave religions through that active effort are some of the most levelheaded and kindhearted people I know. Ex-Muslims in particular are inspirational, perhaps because of a selection process that demands so many layers of critical reflection, particularly in “Western countries,” where there are many complex social pressures and dynamics at play.
I guess in non-Western countries it is even harder for them to leave. PS: Btw I heard in Saudi Arabia there is the death penalty for Apostasy.

I am currently talking with a hard nosed muslim, and it is difficult as he insists the quran is perfect and won't question it and yet all other sources like science, and Bible are supposed to be questioned. I've mentioned the historical and factual inaccuracies and he has gone literally out of his way and out of reasoning to justify them even LYING to me about information. He rejects scientific facts that are wrong and tries in vain to say its my interpretation or I am not understanding the Arabic.
Anyway true religion should not have these scientific error, factual errors, and historical errors. I know you are leaving much and risking death leaving Islam. I will pray for you all. Just know you have friends among the Christians.
PS: one of the biggest factual and historic errors in the quran confuses Mary mother of Jesus with being the Miriam sister of Moses and Aaron.

Ex-Muslim here. Reading the Bible next to the Quran made me realise how both are complete works of fiction. Your point sounds to me exactly like the Muslims who have hard headed beliefs. It’s true because the book says it’s true, my feelings say it’s true. My entire community says is it’s true.

Sodom has been found about the Dead Sea and it has sulphur balls everywhere that catch fire went cracked open.
Jericho destroyed and found with burned grain just like the Bible said.
Recently they find the Hittite civilization just like the Bible said was around.

Sientifical Error in the Bible
Gen 1 from 3 to 5 says light was created on the first day but Gen 1 from 14 to 19 says Sun was created on the 4th day so how can we have light in the first day where the source of the light SUN was created on the 4th day? Another one Gen 1 from 9 to 13 says Earth was created on the 3rd day so how can we have night and day ?because the day depend on the rotation of the earth so with out the Earth we cant have night and day Another one Gen 1 from 9 to 13 says Earth was created

The reason why some people are afraid of hard questions is because hard questions can be intimidating, especially when they suspect or know you are scrutinizing or critiquing their beliefs. People (of most, if not all religions or viewpoints) can get defensive if you attack or critique their foundational beliefs. This can be due to the fear of their own foundations crumbling beneath them &or also pride. If one values truth, one should seek to understand reality.

Luke 15 shows how God is really like. A message of love. He can be called ABBA. Understanding compassion ate kind all grace all comfort. A throne of grace to get mercy and find unmerited favor when we need it.
If there ever were a true creator who needed us all to do and follow certain things for our salvation for the life of the hereafter, that creator would have justly revealed his message clearly and universally to all people for all times, right from the time we were born without us having to struggle to figure out the truth. We would not need a man, a book, a language, from a local region of the world at a certain time in history to reveal this message. In this way every single person would have a fair shot at their salvation.

I do wish they would have touched on Muslims converting to other religions, Christianity in particular. Ex Muslims are some of the strongest and most admired Christians and there seems to be enough converting to be a factor that should have been explored in this video.

All I know that Islamic theology was compiled and distributed to public after 2 centuries of the prophet 's death and anas bin Malik, the ummayad Caliphate ruler was the one that wrote it .

I used to be religious. Traveling and learning about the world, learning science made me look outside the box. The reasons mentioned here for leaving religion is not specific to Islam. It applies to almost all religions out there specially to all the Ibrahimic religions.

Thanks for this intersting overview. It is remarkable that a degree in science/STEM plays such a prominent role. I also have a degree in science, and contradictions between Christian theology and science also contributed to me leaving my traditional Christian faith.
I remember that in my youth one of the issues I could not get is why humans should have an immortal soul, but not animals. This concept combined with my knowledge about human evolution would have meant that once in human evolution there would have been an animal (pre-human, no soul) mother giving birth to a human with an immortal soul. To me this view was so obviously wrong that I was forced to decide to abandon either science/evolution or Christianity.
I guess this contradiction also is the reason why both Christian and Muslim apologists argue heavily against evolution. This scientific knowledge theatens their world view in its core.

In the case of evolution there is a massive amount of evidence, while the only source for the creation of the world and mankind as described in the Bible or the Quran are these books themselves. Other evidence clearly contradicts these stories.
