Your thoughts were exactly what I felt on this version of A&A. I see a lot of people seemingly complaining about the slower nature of the combat system, but to me, that's exactly what made this one stand out to me, especially considering the nature of ww1. Spot on man! Good review!
Amazing board game , actually the first I purchased and the reason why I am into boardgaming as a hobby. I will never forget the first time I got my friends to sit around the table and split the world amongst as we fought for supremacy . I ve since trie multiple strategies and can verify that both Entente and Central Powers have a good shot at victory . Loved the throwback
I know some ppl like the board tracker but I use the axis and allies utility app which is relatively simple and helps track both purchases and ipcs for most axis and allies vs along with turn order and timers really helpful I find.
I wondered how they would do the static Trench Warfare. Good to see that they thought out how airplanes would influence the game and that tanks do not come in until later in the game.
Convinced me, I've wanted this title for years and would just check now and then and game stores and rarely saw it. I just saw it at my game store where I play weekly Warhammer games last night. This will join my DUNE reprint on the shelf for a while but it'll bring me immense pleasure to have even if I only run through it vs myself a handful of times.
Interesting review. The way aircraft influence artillery strength sounds good. Combat in the original AA isn't one of the game's best points but it sounds like they've tried to reproduce some key features of the era in this one.
The combat system is certainly a highlight and the rules around Russia is a neat attempt to try to represent more detailed political elements within the constraints of A&A systems. That said, I think it is a telling 'feature' that the only way to reach the historical war result is effectively the Central Powers player just getting tired of playing and giving up.
Is there any AI system for smaller player counts? Seems like it would be cumbersome and a lot to manage for controling all countries for either side in a two player game.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I have the Avalon Hill version and there has to be some differences because I don't remember a rule about not buying tanks until turn 4. Tanks aren't that valuable overall though except in certain theaters. The British tend to buy them to fight Ottos.
Ive had this game for years, i remember the piece count annoying me so years later I found a beat up copy for 20$ with all the pieces. Now I have more minis than I know what to do with.
I disagree, I have many Axis and Allies games and I think this is the best version. It is quite hard for the central powers to win but that's historically as it should be. Have your most experienced player play either Germany or Austria-Hungary and that will balance the game up nicely. Enjoy.
You must set up all of your attacks before you execute them. You can't attack somewhere, then choose to attack somewhere else, then somewhere else. All decisions on attacks have to be made before you roll any dice.
I don´t really know what to think of the map - with a reprint like this, one could have paid a little more attention to detail on the map. Let’s take the border between Germany and Denmark. While it is not incorrect as to where the true border was, the southern part of Jutland (Denmark) had been occupied by Germany for 50 years by the beginning of The Great War, and those men living in that area were forced to fight in the German army and also die for "Das Waterland" even though they thought of themselves as Danes. I think a shading or diaconal lines on areas like that would have been nice.
This game is not the best of the Axis And Allies line, it's to slow paced for me. Some hose rules we use to speed up the game are: 1. +1 to all the combat values on the battleboard, for both attacking and defending 2. You do not start with mines automatically on a sea zone you control with a port. You have to leave a transport (i.e., Minelayer) in that zone to show that the zone is mined. Roll a die for every enemy ship that enters the zone, roll of 1 destroys/damages enemy ship. The enemy ships can decide to attack the minelayer, if they hit, no more mines in that zone. 3. First to capture paris or berlin wins.
" Relativly balanced here in this game".The Entente wins 95% of the time or 99% out of box with sober players. I have played this maybye ten times and NEVER won as CP ot lost as Entente. Not once... I have seen teh CP win with extreme play (and luck/bad luck) but it requires... almost a miracle.
Really? maybe I have seen to cautious/defensive players as CP but it was played every year at a convention so it was totally qute a few players. @@TheDiscriminatingGamer
Apart from the absolutely atrocious map design (general layout and lack of at least semi-reasonable proportions) that they kept from the original version, this game seems like a winner on the surface. I might pick it if a better map ever makes its way to the internet. The only question I have is, if battles last more than one turn, does the game allow you to reinforce forces or can you not add in units to a contested area?
I don't understand your initial question. Yes, Germany and its allies were known as the Central Powers in WWI, but the brand name of the game is Axis and Allies - they weren't going to change it for the sake of historical accuracy.
Great great game, totally unbalanced though…. The CPs need a lot of house rules… I even bought zeppelins to take troops to Africa… And the map is weird. I downloaded a bigger one.
The Good Captain addressed the imbalance and suggested some really good house rules for balance. Like not allowing the allies to invade strict neutrals (except Persia) for an example.

I'm pretty sure the game highly favors the Allies. The poor balance sadly is one of the few downsides of the game.
Just got my copy from Renegade. In addition to is strategic simplicity, the board and pieces are wonderful.

Realistic combat rules: both players roll dice. High roller loses all infantry. Low roller loses all infantry. Winner advances 3 feet.

Hey TDG,
Wich Game takes more time to finish? A&A 1914 or Pacific 2nd? Thanks for answer…
Both very long. I couldn't say for sure.

It's really not that bad. Takes some time but not hard to keep track of.
It's not hard to keep track of, but it bogs the game down. Still very fun though.
