World's Deepest Shipwreck Discovered by Explorers

- Explorers have found the world’s deepest shipwreck. The USS Samuel B. Roberts, nicknamed the Sammy B, was a WWII destroyer escort. In October 1944, during the Battle of Samar, the USS Samuel B. Roberts was hit by a torpedo and sank. An expedition team spent eight days diving into the ocean near the Philippines searching for this 78-year-old war grave. They found it 22,916-feet, or about 4.3 miles, down.
It’s amazing how none of the rounds exploded and how the ship was well preserved, hats off to all the people who fought that day.
The Roberts shot off almost all of her ammo. By the time she began sinking, her guns were so hot that a shell exploded in the breech of the aft mount when they tried loading it.
Right?? So cool!
It went all the way down
@@sirboomsalot4902 wow didnt know this...watercooling jackets on the barrels couldve helped!!
@@fidelcatsro6948 I don't think so just think of the size it would need to be
The USS Johnston was the deepest shipwreck until now and fought with the Samuel B Roberts in the battle. May both ships & their crews rest in peace
it's the people that need peace not the boats
@@ntrlstar ye want me to change it?
May the crews in those ships rest in peace
Wow I didn’t know this!
This is the type of videos I like to watch , not tik Tok videos 🙄
The Samuel B. Roberts wasn’t hit by a torpedo; what killed her was three 14-inch shells from the battleship Kongo that blew a hole below the waterline.
Shells or torps, she's now a wreak
youd think fact checking would be a crucial part of reporting historical facts like this but i think they failed this time.... also LEET gulf and SAY-MAR, a quick google search could have corrected her pronounciation.
Were you there? If not then don't lie or else you can get reported for misinformation.
@@Nope991 According to your logic, any place that you haven't visited doesn't exist because you've never been there.

Correction: Not NEAR the Philippines. IT IS really in the Philippines.

Also, minor correction, the last "e" in Leyte is not silent. It's more like ley-teh. I actually live near that province.
@@avariceseven9443 yea Ley-teh. Not Liyt.
I live in just below Tacloban Leyte
Kind of impressive that the ship seems decently preserved after all this time. Also, may those brave crews rest in peace.
Deeper water = colder tempatures
@@Amused_Comfort_Inc = better preservation
@@simply2187 not exactly, tahts not how it works. Deeper water means more pressure, so less preservation
I know news agencies don't do much research for their articles and news but I really wished Samuel B Robert's were given more credits. The Samuel B Robert's, which is a flimsy, small and really weak ship in terms of WWII fire power and only meant for fighting submarines fought a massive fleet. Together with the rest of Taffy 3, that small and flimsy destroyer Escort went head on against a massive Japanese fleet whose flagship alone weights more than the entire Taffy 3 combined. This is where Samuel B Robert's earned the nickname "The destroyer that fought like a battleship".
I encourage everyone to give the story of this ship a read because it's a really amazing feat because that small ship and her crew together with the rest of Taffy 3 managed to repel the assault from Japan's then most powerful fleet. Had they failed to repel the Japanese, the American landing which was underwent less than 100 miles away would have been a disaster because Taffy was the online line of defence between them and the Japanese.
Admiral Halsey has been criticized for taking the Japanese bait and leaving invasion fleet.
Had it not been for tenacious attacks of Taffy 3 , things could have ended very badly for US Navy. Truly a great generation that needs to be remembered and honored.
They (Taffy 3) where the only ones that stood between the IJN battleships and the beachhead in Leyte island where the Marines and the Army where unloading troops and supplies. There where no airplanes/bombers to count on for help because it (carrier group) got baited to go up further north to chase what ended up to be a decoy
fleet. Can you just imagine if the Yamato and the other battleships where able to get through? The shells will be hitting the beach, landing crafts and ships and there's no way to hit back because of all those powerful main batteries that can shoot 15-18 miles or something. There is a memorial in San Diego, but I think they should really do more to honor the men that made the ultimate sacrifice.
That’s really cool and I thought it was the USS Johnston cause it’s one of the deepest shipwrecks that have been discovered
I think the USS Johnston was the deepest until this ship was found
@@Brady_Stewart_238 true
Wow this is incredible. So much history. May the crew Rest In Peace 🙏🏽
I would feel so scared if I found something like that
Fax, idk why either lmao
Why???
You might encounter USOs at such depths
Of all the ships to break Johnston's record of being the deepest shipwreck ever found, the battleship Samuel B. Roberts is one of the few worthy to claim that title from her.
Taffy 3 was the greatest naval fleet to have ever sailed the Seven Seas. Taffy 3's might singlehandedly turned back the Mighty Yamato and the entirety of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Outgunned is a understatement. This ship charged the Japanese navy's best battleships to buy time for the fleet to escape.
It’s like 4 Davids vs 12 Goliaths, with the Davids scaring off the Goliaths

🐱cat that fought like a 🦁lion!!
My grandfather Don Young was on this ship when it sunk, he and others were rescued after being in the water for a long time, and at the time it was sunk he was 17 years old.
Battle 360 did a fantastic episode on the Taffy 3 task force. The bravery of these guys who fought against such ridiculous odds, truly amazing.

The destroyer escort that fought like a battleship. We Filipinos thank her and her gallant crew for their service.
It sent chills down my entire body knowing that there's most likely deceased men still inside of that ship .
I paused the video for a moment just to take that in .
And to also dedicate a moment of silence and a prayer for them and their loved ones too.
It truly breaks my heart knowing there's a huge possibility that there's nothing we would be able to do to get them out .
God bless them all!!
I'm so extremely grateful to them & for the service that they provided for us , while fighting for our Country!
They will always be Our heroes. 🇺🇲❤🌹
I doubt it, they likely have decomposed and or have been consumed by fish
@@redtob2119 depending on how deep there still could possibly be bones, although tbf I’m not sure if they would’ve been dissolved by the salt water by now
Respect how y’all pronounce Samar. Yall butchered it to “Saymar” it’s pronounced as “Sah Mar” and Leyte is not pronounced as “late” it’s pronounced as “ Lay Teh”
Ikr
literally 💀
Hahhaah late
As a person who live in leyte your pronounce is correct
Amazing is how the small force of destroyers and small carriers managed to hold off the entire Japanese fleet just to save the Allied ground forces which they successfully prevented it.
This is so cool, I’m a huge fan of you guys!!
That's probably where my dad went to go buy milk 22 years ago
Bruh lmaoooooo
The history channel Yarnhub also made a video on the USS Samuel B. Roberts, Taffy 3 and Battle of Samar and they did a great job with animating and telling the story of Samuel B. Roberts and Battle of Samar
At least their surviving loved ones have found closure. Thank you for your service & may you all rest in peace.
For correction: it’s in the Philippine not near Philippine, please don’t mislead and look it up the battle of Samar
Phillipine Sea Rich of history...
Proud to be a Filipino...
To put the depth in perspective it's nearly twice as deep as the Titanic Wreck Site. The Mir Submersibles that regularly explore that depth has a dive limit of 20,000 feet.
Now that's what I call deep. It's deeper than the Titanic. Rest in peace to those veterans who gave their lives during World War 2 and I thank them for their service.
That's what she said
This is actually mind blowing just knowing how much is hidden.
*Actually the world’s deepest ship wreck is my life experiences*
Here before this gets famous or copied by some checkmark
Lol, hopefully you find your bright future.
Ok edgelord
Funny
The bravery of these sailors is astounding. Destroyers charging battleships takes a lot guts. They fought so fiercely that the Imperial Navy turned away instead of charging towards our lightly defended beach head
That's amazing at least it was found!
Tons and tons of history just with one find. The great unknown
Its pretty astonishing to see a discovery that near to us.
Thank God and God bless everyone
that's really cool discovery, hope does explorers could find other kind of cool stuff n ye.
Those brave sailors gave their all for all of us.

@@oreochild5652 hell, nowadays you never know
Omg.. That's a really big ship!
And in the grand scheme of things, the Roberts was tiny. She was of the smallest ships in Taffy 3. The flagship of the fleet they fought against, the Yamato, weighed more than every ship in Taffy 3 combined and just one of her gun turrets weighed more than the Samuel B. Roberts. And Taffy 3 won.
@@sirboomsalot4902 "weighed more than every ship in Taffy 3 combined and just one of her gun turrets weighed more than the Samuel B. Roberts."
A gun from Yamato weighed more than any ship in Taffy 3, the jeep carriers included.
Amazing
Wow!
It is huge and amazing that is the best coolest escort ship I've ever seen🤔
Sammy B was part of Taffy 3 escort carriers and DD escorts against Japanese heavy cruisers & Battleships Amazing David vs Goliath fight
It is so deep
must be cool exploring shipwrecks as a diver, divers can help give closure like if a ship sank and if the victim's family dont know where they went, the diver can give closure
That's crazy
Awesome
Yeah
Far deeper than the Titanic which is about two miles. And still so intact after more than seventy years!
May all of the sailors rest in peace.
Cool
That’s such a surprise to think a ship like that had ammunition onboard 🙄🤔
This is crazy
I almost thought she said “ Yeet “ gulf . But then realized she pronounced Leyte gulf wrong lol
Philippines has one of the deepest ocean after Mariana trench.
The Philippines will protect the graveyard.
I really hope so knowing what happened to HMS Prince of Wales, Repulse and other Allied ships in Java Sea.
@@Aelxi you need to go to the Philippines, you will find how supportive this country to the United States. They have history. Philippines used to be a U.S. territory.

Battle of Samar took place IN SAMAR, Philippines NOT near the Phil.
It's quite a shame that you can't dive down the the wreck or enter it without risk, the wreck of the Samuel B. Roberts ("Sammy B") holds a fascinating and important history. Maybe one day, we can uncover that history.
Its IN the Philippines. Not near the Philippines
Me and the boys bringing down our scanners
Taffy 3 were some of the bravest men during ww2
"Leet gulf"
That is making me so angry for absolutely no reason
Fun fact: Yamato's sister ship "Musashi" 2nd most biggest battleship ever made also sank here in the philippines, She lies deep below sibuyan sea
I'm a native Filipino and hearing "lit" instead of "lei-te" is honestly funny 😆
Don't blame yalll honestly Filipino is a pain to learn
Not near in the Philippines INSIDE PAR
It's pronounced Ley-teh and it is IN the Philippines
Can't believe it was in here in the🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
So it’s roughly 10,316 feet deeper than the wreck of the Titanic which is approximately 12,600 feet below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean
Has any found the wreckage of the USS Hoel? My uncle was one of the few survivors. It also went down in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Hoel will likely be found next. She sunk in the same relative area as Sammy B. and Johnston and Johnston was the first of Taffy 3 to be found.
The way that she pronounce Samar😭😭😭
I know another ship of the same name was sliced in half with the bow section sinking
I saw this and thought is was the titanic🤣🤣🤣
Thats why the say 95% Of the ocean is being unexplored
I'VE WATCH
And the ship has the same 1st name as me.
Golds silver?? 💯💜💛
