argentina scored more goals against france than any other team managed to do. the fact that they happened to meet so early in the tournament screwed over messi's chances at winning the balon d'or. Modric is an important piece of croatia's team, sure, but that team really didn't deserve to be in the final. If anything, rakitic was more important in the knockout stages and croatia were given an easy bracket thanks to things like spain choking against russia. But the popular opinion that caught traction was that modric was the creator of the success of all the teams he played in. To this day I think it was an incredibly weak year for the ballon d'or
Ballon d'or is less about performances but more about the narrative. If you are amongst the top 5 players and have a strong story that can captivate people's imagination, then you are a shoe in.

@@rachetmarvel931 let me rephrase the previous guy's comment...people who know anything about football, real football fans, SHOULDN'T care about the Ballon d'Or nowadays, because it's a complete farce.

I think it is important to note that whenever discussions about the Ballon D’Or take place that prior to the Ronaldo-Messi era, the FIFA World Player of the Year was in fact the “higher” award and that was the one that really players wanted to win. Eg in 2004 Shevchenko won the Ballon D’Or but Ronaldinho won the FIFA WPY and clearly everyone knew Ronaldinho was the “best player” at the time and then did go on and win both awards the following year in 2005.
I don't know why you have so many upvotes but that is completly wrong, the Ballon d'Or has always been the most prestigious individual award in football. You can certainly argue that it has been wrongly awarded at times, I'm no arguing that, but to say that FIFA World Player of the Year is the most prestigious is absolutely wrong. The Ballon d'Or has been awarded since 1956, the FIFA World Player of the Year started in 1991, and the former has always been the most prestigious one.
@@eduardc1058 the FIFA WPY as it was awarded by FIFA became the most prestigious once it started. The fact that the Ballon D’Or is older does not mean that when FIFA started their awards it did not become the top awards in the game. The best was when the two awards merged and were called the FIFA Ballon D’Or. Then after they split I agree that this so called FIFA Best awards are pointless and the Ballon D’Or is back to being the best. However for the period of the FIFA WPY it did overtake the Ballon D’Or.
@@eduardc1058 You forgot that for a long time only Europeans could win the Ballon d'Or, hence the FIFA award was the most relevant, given that included all the players. Being older is not equal to being the more relevant and recognized award.
@@eduardc1058 Imran M is correct. For a long time only European players - playing in Europe - were eligible to win the Ballon d'Or until 1995 that's why it was commonly known as the "European best player" there wasn't any "World's best player" till FIFA introduced it in 1991. It was only after 95 that both awards were in competition with each other when France Football made non Europeans eligible. FIFA World Best Player was considered "authentic" and thus more popular cause The FIFA award was decided by your Football peers around the world via captains and coaches of international teams voting who was the best player, unlike what would be seen as the privilege of touch journalists like France Football. Ballon d'Or only became more popular when it merged with FIFA WPY award in 2010. Look at the winners of the awards between 91 and 09 when they weren't won by the same player and you can see which was way more popular. The current "UEFA Men's Best Player" is basically what the Ballon D'or was seen as until it merged with FIFA
It shouldn't matter if Pedri or anyone else wins a Ballon d'Or during their career. It is an individual popularity contest that exists in the context of a team sport. It would make more sense as an award if everyone who voted also voted based on the same criteria, but who is the best is very subjective. Not to mention how skewed it is towards attacking players.
On the Modric part, not sure I agree that Messi suffered a "disruptive and disappointing year at Barcelona." Messi won a domestic double (La Liga and Copa del Rey), whilst not losing a single game (the only game Barcelona lost in the league that season was a 5-4 loss to Levante after mathematically winning the league with Messi not even in the match-day squad). He finished the year top scorer, top assist provider, most goals from outside the box, most free-kicks scored, most touches in the opposition box, most passes completed in the opposition third, most dribbles completed. It was, quite frankly, an outstanding year for Messi. Yet, somehow, he finished 5th. If any other player put up the stats that Messi put that year, I think they'd comfortably win the award. People were just getting sick of Messi winning every single year and so his own standards let him down. Obviously, the shock of him coming 5th in 2018 meant he won it in 2019. The only reason Messi didn't win the Ballon d'Or in 2018, or even come in the top 3, was because Barcelona lost to Roma in the Champions League quarter-final (which was hardly Messi's fault) and Argentina had a 'disappointing' World Cup (i.e. getting knocked out narrowly in a 4-3 game against eventual winners France - goodness knows how Argentina losing to France is a bad World Cup run, whilst Croatia scraping their way to the final against Russia and Denmark on penalties, then beating an overperforming (at the time) England team only to also lose to France is somehow impressive and Ballon d'Or worthy). It actually astonishes me how people just write Messi off as 'having a bad year' in 2018 when he was astonishing. Literally 2 games, the 2 I mentioned, defined everyone's perception of him that season.
The year Modric won the Balon D’or we also saw how important the team the players is in. Because Modric wasn’t even the best player on that Madrid squad and in the World Cup final he was ghost disappeared the match. Only reason Ronaldo didn’t win it is because he left Madrid. If he would of stayed Modric wouldn’t even have ever got the Balon D’or
He wont need to win ballon dor cuz he will be a well recognized legend like xavi and iniesta But from barca it will be fati who would be winng ballon dor
I could care less who wins the Balon D’or. The fact it’s weighted so heavily towards attackers is a massive problem. VVD should’ve won one as should Sneijder, Ribery, Xavi, Iniesta and Neuer. The award should be broken up into the best central midfielder, center forward, winger, fullback, goalkeeper and centerback. Liverpool would never have won the UCL without VVD. Bayern wouldn’t have had a treble without Ribery, inter wouldn’t have won the UCL without Sneijder, a double for Bayern without Neur’s heroics or Messi bagging most goals in a season without Xavi or Iniesta. Those are the most recent examples I can think of.
Non of them was better then cr7 or messi as ballon dor go to the best (individuele) player what cr7 and messi did every year was insane they scored around 80 goals each season while a lewandowski scores maybe 40 in a good season in the bundesliga
Yep if Van Dijk couldn’t win it despite winning Uefa Player of the year and Premier League player of the year whilst also not getting dribbled past you may aswell just not nominate defenders for the Balon do’r anymore because that’s the equivalent of a striker breaking multiple records in one season because as a striker you can have multiple off days and still win the big awards but as a defender if you just have 1 bad day then it’s over and you should be looking towards next years one even Ramos best seasons he wasn’t challenging for a Balon d’or and when he retires he’ll be seen as one of the best defenders in history and he wouldn’t have came close to the Balon d’or that’s how hard it is for a defender to even be in the conversation for one

I’m a bit surprised there wasn’t any talk about how the overall principles behind the Ballon d’Or have changed since 2007. Looking at the lists of finalists, I think it’s hard to say that the type of player the voters favor hasn’t changed because of the Messi-Ronaldo era.
It's hard that Iniesta or Xavi hasn't won a Ballon d'or. They won the world cup and 2 euros along with champions league and la liga on multiple occasions

The award isn’t usually awarded to the best player of the calendar year like it’s supposed to be. It’s just a popularity contest voted for by Journalists and players who vote for their own. I think voting should be done by the Director of football or chief scout of every club since they watch alot of football in all countries and are paid to be a better judge of players ability as their job
There's Haaland, Mbappe, Vinicius, Sancho, but I feel Haaland and Mbappe will be the ones to fight for it in the next 12 years, maybe Vini, Havertz, Foden, Gnabry, will win it.
I think a lot of it depends on team performance tbh. As we know, the Ballon d'Or has basically become an award given to the stand-out player on the team that wins the Champion's League and/or World Cup unless there's someone as good as Messi of course. As such, if Barcelona win the treble (I know, looks unlikely rn, but this is a hypothetical scenario) then Pedri could win it by virtue of people seeing him in the same way that they saw Modric for Croatia and Real Madrid.
Could you do a video on if the Premier league is harder to win than it was 20-30 years ago please? Comparisons between what is now a Manchester City dominance, to what United dominated before. And the rise and fall of top teams? I wasnt sure if this had been done before, but seems fitting considering the recent gap between the top 2 premier league winning sides.
I see Vinicius Jr. to be the first of youngsters to win Ballon d'Or and be more dominant than Haaland and Mbappe in the post Messi/Ronaldo period. For this year I predict Benzema as a Ballon d'Or winner. Depending on League of Nations results Modrić could "steal" another one. Benzema, Modrić and Courtois have been the pillars of Real this season.
Messi and Barcelona “disappointing” 2018: - La Liga (near invincible lost last game w/o Messi) - Spanish Cup (Messi scored in final) - Spanish Super Cup - European golden boot - Top goalscorer & assister in La Liga Insane standard to be held to if that’s “disappointing” and warrants 5th place
International tournaments play a huge part in the ballon dor. Messi was underwhelming in the world cup. Just like last season, messi won the ballon dor bcuz of copa america.
Playing in La Liga does not guarantee you the award anymore, you could argue the best player in the division is an ageing Benzema. The title of the video got me thinking of Jorginho winning the Euros and Champions league but only winning fifa player of the year. I'm sure he'll be in contention in time, Pedri's already shown how class he is
Michael Cox saying that it is right the award goes to players who quite literally make the difference on the pitch conversely shows how little the people voting for those awards (i.e. journalists primarily) have any clue on how to rate non-goalscoring positions. The awards should be voted on solely by managers of all clubs (not even by players), otherwise its quite literally a farce. Maybe what the journalists can do is just consolidate a list of 100 top players in Europe, so managers don't have to spend hours and hours of unbilled time searching for them.
Another condition for the ballon d'or: Don't play in the Premier League. Too many players were overlooked whilst they played in the Prem' for this award. How did, for example, Henry never win one is a bit suspicious.
Im not going to say that the Premier League is better than the other leagues but I wonder if the faster pace of play and more physicality makes it harder for individuals to shine when compared to another league where the best players may have a bit more time in the ball. The Bundesliga is also a faster paced environment and it hasn’t produced a Ballon d’Or winner in a bit. I think it’s more to do with the players themselves and the fact that all the best players in that league currently play for the same team so it’s harder to shine but I was just wondering
@@jordanastro4694 Yes, and so did Michael Owen at Liverpool but the rarity of that happening in what has been the most competitive league in quite a while, is staggering. Who knows, maybe Haarland will win it next year, but it's more likely to be Mbappe imo.
I’d said Haaland has a pretty good chance at winning the ballon d’or because of his national team. Not him actually winning a international cup, but if he could ever get his team to a semi final and is the one standing out, basically just scoring or assisting that would give him pretty good luck to win it. Since if your Mbappe or pedri, with Spain or France you should basically always get to the semi final of a major international trophy to have a good chance at winning.

The assumption about Mbappe and Halland has an important fallacy. They're already in their 20, so they won't be the Messi and Ronaldo dominance repetition. Hence, I would say there's a bigger chance for other players. Here's one more: Haaland won't be as good as people think he will be.
The Mbappe vs Halland thing only exists because Messi and Ronaldo are past their primes and each day closer to retiring. It's marketing. The media and other corporations need the next big rivalry no matter what. It's sad, the way they hyper inflate young kids.

@@eduardc1058
Imran M is correct.
Bet you're saying this because Messi has the most ballon dors. Dont worry though he has the most wpy too
It shouldn't matter if Pedri or anyone else wins a Ballon d'Or during their career.

@@a-manthegeneral he's good, the problem is people expects him to be "something". He plays according to his means and succeds within his team's possibility. He has nothing to prove to us. We love football but it is given far too much importance these days. For Mbappe, football it's a job and basically a means to an end, getting rich. This relationship player-fans is very toxic.
No one expects Gary from your office to be the best at what he does and he's doing his job too, but since it's not something fancy as playing football but just sitting around in front of a computer he's conditioned to be employee #87. So why expect some kid we don't know to be the best footballer in the world.
I think you guys forgot kaka, not a volume goal scorer and a midfielder who was just quality.
Why Tifo adds question marks to statements?
engagement
I hate footballs push towards individualism, I don’t care for the Balon D’or in the slightest, the fact kids grow up dreaming of winning that rather than the league is just wrong. Football is a team sport.
Am I the only one who prefers Joe doing the narration rather than Ian?
Absolutely.
Attack wins u games, Defence wins u titles- Sir Alex Ferguson
1:20 :)
Pedri would have to have a great season with Barca, win la liga or the champions league and win a cup with Spain while being the main factor to their victory.
A very insightful piece.
Good analysis as always. Props to Ian for the narration, thought I'll miss Joe's soothing voice; specially for the sensitive transfers vids. Pretty excited to see what you guys have ready for this transfer window.
Wait is Joe completely gone?
@@d1nesh._223 I guess he'll take a different role, but he is also in Tifo IRL's channel. I'm hoping he'll narrate the sensitive transfers ones.
@@thenamesbarretto sensible transfers you mean lol
@@thenamesbarretto He was on vacation. These videos were recorded a while back cause it takes time with the art and editing. He's back now and will return to narration.
The instrumental playing in the background is banging!
With the Overhype I'm seeing already, he definitely can
No player should really take that award to heart. It's a favouritism award and very biased.
An award they give based on different criterias that suits the media's favourite player yearly.
He isn't a stricker...Modric deserved it and people where talking about that other players scored more goals than him.
If modric deserved it how come players like Xavi never won it? They won the champions League and world cup in the same year iniesta scoring the winning goal. Modric was only awarded the ballon D'or to stop Ronaldo winning it.
2:31 Literally (said in Jeremy Clarkson's voice)
You forgot one very important thing
Pedri in recent months has managed to sky rocket his goal output, quite literally performing the messi role at Barca (scoring when his team needs him, which is always lol)
Years down he will only get better
And it’s not impossible to see him doing 50+ g/a alomg with some titles for Barca
Making him the clear favorite
50+ g/a? You’re insane.
Skyrocket? Lol
There are defenders with more goals than him
Pepe in 2016 (CL + Euros)
Varane 2018 (CL + WC)
With monsters performance couldn't even get the recognition (even in this video) sums up the topic.. if you are not attacker/CF you won't be considered in this popularity award
Cause goalscoring is the hardest part of football
To be honest we were a very poor defence in 2018, Varane didn’t deserve that kind of recognition
Real Madrid this is, France defended like crazy lol
If he does well in a World Cup, then he could win it. Messi and Ronaldo were doing great in 2018, but modric did good in the World Cup and cancelled out their season. The balon dor people value it more than a full season
I miss the posh lad :(
He will , we will make him win , gather up barca pr
Pavel Nedved winning ahead of Henry that season was absolute robbery
I don't know why history is being rewritten like this. The Ballon d'Or was not the trophy given to the best player in the world until 2009. It was seen as the best player in Europe. I remember Nedved winning it, and it was a small segment of a page in the magazine (probably 442) compared to the image of Zidane standing with the FIFA World Player of the Year award
