For beginners like me, nothing is more helpful than such type of basic and precise videos. Load of thanks for taking the time to make such an incredible basic tutorial set of videos for Nikon D3400. Thanks a ton Sir. Greetings from India :D
I've had my D3400 since christmas and I just came across your videos about it.... gosh I wish I would have found these a few months ago! I just learned so much about my camera that I didn't know! Thank you! You should keep making videos on this camera!
What a pleasure to read your kind words - thanks very much for taking the time to comment. Are there other topics that you'd be interested in? I've returned the camera to Nikon, but might be able to borrow it again.
Mr Maarten with your recommendation, i bought d3400, it's a wonderful little camera, could you please show us the settings for capturing action using this camera. I am particularly interested in capturing my buddy playing table tennis and since it's an indoor game and it is difficult to get proper exposure. Thanks.
In S mode, set the shutter speed to 1000 (you'll have to test, might be faster, slower might be OK). Set the ISO to 6400 - if that's not enough, maybe you'll need a faster lens.
This video is very helpful for novice photographers like myself- thank you so much! I've watched this video several times because it's so descriptive it allows you to truly get it. You are super awesome!
Thank you so much for the content. I am a college freshman and my photography class has a cannon camera. I have a nikon d3400, I found your channel to help me work with my nikon d3400
Great video, I have a question regarding the use of UV lens. does the UV lens add anything to the image quality or does it distort the color of the image?
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. The typically use of a UV lens is for protection - it helps so that the lens doesn't get scratched or damaged - I've saved more than one lens with a UV filter. As for it's filtering properties, I'm not sure it helps, but it certainly shouldn't change the light. A reputable brand purchased from a reputable dealer should be completely transparent.
I would set the white balance to sunlight and record RAW so that I could make adjustments in post as needed. Trying to make adjustments for every shot may be counterproductive and deprive your images of the lighting effects that the production is attempting to create.
@@MaartenHeilbron The place I'm thinking of is at a county fair. They barely care about lighting at all, much less setting a certain look with it, lol. It can be frustrating. Thanks for your advice!
Good evening Maarten. Firstly, thank you for these excellent videos and your abundance of patience!. Now, possibly a basic question please. Have I understood correctly, that the picture control settings apply only to the JPEGs produced by the camera and have no effect on the RAW files?
I appreciate the kind words. Yes, that's correct, the RAW files are the image data exactly as captured by the sensor and incorporate only the aperture, shutter, ISO and focus information. The remainder of the settings - white balance, colour profiles, Active D lighting, etc. only apply to JPEG images. That said, Nikon's desktop software does read the settings that you used and can apply them to the RAW file while you're editing. Lightroom, and others, do not.
Always my pleasure - the nice thing about RAW is that if an image doesn't quite turn out right, or you've applied a setting you later regret, you still have the actual output.
For image quality tests, I recommend dpreview - they use the same chart and setting to test each camera. I would suspect that the larger sensor on the Nikon provides a better result.
Can I change the white balance manually? For example, set the Kelvin white balance on the camera? Or is this feature not available in this series of cameras? Maybe there is another firmware for activating the Kelvin white balance, as, for example, is observed in Canon? Anybody knows about it?
The D3400 does not have the ability to select a Kelvin temperature. I am not familiar with all cameras, but this is now (as opposed to five years ago when this camera was released) a fairly standard feature, even in lower end models.
Thank you very much for doing such a complete and helpful video. Would it be possible to make a full in depth comparison between Nikon D3400 and Canon 200D? (especially for low light situations and astrophotography)
I enjoyed reading your kind words. I appreciate that might be an interesting topic, but I prefer to concentrate on specific cameras in single reviews that provide a more general overview.
I thought you're gonna sing at the beginning of this video. lol. anyway, I'll be getting my first dslr camera tomorrow(Nikon D3400) and you already gave me ideas on how to use use it properly. Thanks.
Hello, I just thankful for the videos you post. Is a big help for me after I got my NIKON D3400. Can you please let us know what are the best setting to take pictures of Artwork? I have a set of daylights 6500 and still can't take good pictures of my paintings. Any help will be highly appreciate. Thank You!
Thank you for your kind words, it's my pleasure. I would suggest that you use P mode with auto white balance with the lowest ISO possible. Use a tripod, don't point lights at the art, unless you have softboxes. Tilt the art a little forward to minimize reflections. If they're images in a glass frame, place them on a dark/black background to cut reflections. Hope this helps.
Hello Mr. Maarten, I'm an artist and currently taking pictures of my oil paintings with D3400. I sometimes has problem with reflection. Do you have experience with polarization filter (circular polarization filter)? If so, do you think it will help in my case? You are so helpful to many people, including me. I wish Life will return your kindness many fold.
A polarizing filter may help - it really depend on the lighting. The best option is either to change the lighting or to tilt the image forward to eliminate the reflection. A video (continuous) light in a softbox is another solution.
It's a little basic, but with a good sensor and interchangeable lenses and a full suite of manual controls, an excellent novice choice. If you can do better than the kit lens in your budget, I would advise that.
I'm indifferent. You're either a Canon person or a Nikon person - and in any given price/quality category, it comes down to your personal preference. I have some Canon lenses so would probably go with Canon, but the D3400 is a similarly good camera. Either way, don't get the kit lens, which for both really reduces the value in these models.
Sir kindly i wanna know about the heating issues of this cemera. I bought this cemera recently but it start getting heated/warm within a few minutes of use. As this is my first time using dslr i have no idea about this all.
This is not usually an issue with DSLR style cameras. Are you shooting video? If not, I wonder if you are being overly sensitive or there is a problem with your camera.
Thanx for video,......it will be helpful to do experiments.' I am facing an issue.....I was trying to take picture of a product (shirt) with D3400 ........white balance is AUTO and i am using M (manual ) mode., ISO 100, 2 flash light Model 621RX with umbrella . I have color issue...... Grey color shirt is becoming BROWN and (light Olive Green is also different) ............also other colors are different from actual color. Please help me to understand issue.
That should work. Are there other lights in the room that are setting off the white balance? Have you tried the sunlight setting? Which colour profile are you using? Have you tried to shoot a test or grey card with the shirt and then making the adjustments in your photo editor to create the appropriate white balance?
@@MaartenHeilbron Sir , two light in room LED bulb and LED tube light. I tried sunlight setting but didn't work. I didn't tried with grey card or test....please put some more light on it. I tried A mode , color are little better , but issue is it take time to click picture, so picture getting blur. when i take picture with model , there is no issue ...may be distance is more. is there any combination of ISO, shutter speed and aperture , which i should try? what you mean by color profile ???
@@sanjaybatra6593 Turn off all the lights. If you are using flash, and it is working properly, there should not be a blur. The exposure settings will not affect the colour balance. When you say you tried with grey card, did you capture and use a custom colour balance? Was the grey card in the same lighting situation? Picture control is what Nikon calls colour profiles.
Are you using a white balance appropriate to the scene? Have you tried making adjustments to the picture controls to adjust the parameters to make the image more pleasing? Is there sufficient light?
Toss up. Unless there's one that has a feature you want, choose with your wallet, then your hand (which feels better), and finally your sense of style, aesthetics and your heart - pick the one you're proud to own (maybe brand preference) and would never leave at home. Hope this helps.
