The reaction is quite normal,but unfortunately I did not like the end.When it was Afton William who felt sorry for the children?he kills them himself,and then suddenly began to feel sorry for her and be angry at that person(I hope I understood correctly).He probably would even chuckle with such a stupid (his opinion) death.
If it were William (which it is not), he wouldnt find joy in the death on a child tbh, though he'd probably be indifferent because he kills them too, since in the books its hinted at that he doesnt really find pleasure in child killing, he just does it to get his goal (Immortality)
