A very interesting programme. Congratulations on your involvement in what I view as a golden age of documentary film making.
All too scripted, self conscious and self interested now.
Going to the States in those days really was a leap of faith, pre internet, globalisation, mobile phones etc, etc. Also before the American car industry collapsed and so the whole environment was so different to the UK.
I went to Chicago six years after this was filmed.
Always loved Alans work too, from his war correspondent days onwards.
As ever, would love to know what happened to these people? Especially the three dancers at the start.
If only Frank Marker was still about! 😉

Yes, the 'Where are they now?' would be fascinating. This programme was my inspiration for leaving suburban Hampshire to live in New York, where I had the happiest times of my life. I would heartily recommend anyone to - 'with one mighty bound - go and live with Uncle Sam'. As you say, back in pre internet, pre-mobiles etc times America truly WAS a foreign country, with very little to remind you of home. Now it is a comparatively easy bound, and to just wander off from the airport and find a cash job still fairly easy. America will welcome you if you intend to work hard, but it must be born in mind that Americans usually don't get any paid holiday, and public holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving and July 4th are normally just one unpaid day. However, a young person with no ties will still have an extraordinary time living amongst those lovely, polite, sweet people. I thank Americans for the wonderful time they showed me, and recommend their welcome and way of life to everyone who has the get-up-and-go to get up and go. I wouldn't have missed my time there for the world.

I'm Rachel Davies in this footage and it now seems like a lifetime ago! Alan Whicker was extremely nice to work with and I think his partner Valerie was there too. Were you there in the dressing room when we filmed this then Keith? I often wonder if any of the show footage that didn't make the programme was saved? So very little footage of Jubilee exists from this time period and unfortunately my most favourite dance I ever performed was excluded from the programme . Thanks for sharing. I have a copy on VHS tape and I also have the book from the series.

Fascinating! What happened to you? How long did you stay in LV and where did you go from there?

@@MrGranfield I stayed in Vegas until summer 1986 and then went back to the Lido in Paris (which is where I was before Vegas). Coincidentally our youngest daughter was in the closing cast of Jubilee in 2016 and even danced the same spot as I had done as a Dolly Sister in the 80's. We have two daughters, both are dancers & currently at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. The irony of us discussing 'the man' situation in this footage & me saying it was the last thing on my mind, is that my future husband had just joined the cast when we filmed this. Still married after all these years. Both Jill and Suzanne eventually returned to the UK which is where I settled too.

Yes I was that sound recordist. Remember it well! Sadly all of the unused rushes would have been junked I'm afraid. We're just lucky that home recording had become a thing by then. So much was lost. Best wishes Rachel. Keith

I used to love Wicker's World and Wicker's New World. America seemed like Dreamland back then. But why did they have to shoot Joan Collins half in shade?

Hi Anon, I did post three episodes and have just done most of the Australian Waltzing Matilda series and all of the QE2 Fast Boat to China series. I'm looking for the missing episodes to include them. Cheers Keith

I have always wondered what particular recording equipment has been used, mics, tape recordings, etc, and I'd be thankful if anyone could have supplied this information. The sound of these recordings of voice are different from what we have now in the digital era and have it's own charm.

What a superb interviewer Alan Whicker was along with Michael Parkinson just asked a question and let the other person answer at length unlike todays narcissistic 'its my show' waste of spaces and as for Joanie C never get tired of those 'come hither' eyes!
