  • I built a 3 point hay unroller to mount on the back of my tractor after watching some of Greg Judy's videos as he discussed the benefits of unrolling hay out on pasture rather than feeding with hay rings.

You need to unroll the bale in the opposite direction. Think about how the roll was baled, and unroll it the opposite way.

Good eye noticing the direction the hay was baled. I'll look for this when unrolling the hay in the future.

It might be compaction issues from the cattle constantly walking over 1 area, spraying herbicide is going to make it even worse.
The best choice would be put a thick warm season cover crop that includes sorghum sudan grass in late spring, then when it gets around 3-4 feet tall graze it down to no more than 12 inches high. Then geaze it a 2nd time later before fall and plant a cool season cover crop mixture and graze that off when it gets around 2-3 feet high. Doing this multiple times consecutively will build the soil and choke out the weeds so you can eventually plant a perennial pasture mixture of grasses and legumes.

When we were continuous grazing our bale spots looked exactly like yours. When we went to rotational grazing and let the area rest for 45 days or so the area around the bales would spring up and be greener than the rest. As soon as we let the cows in, they would head straight for the rings and eat them down to the ground and they would be almost bare again after a day. What we figured out is that the cows preferred whatever came up there and clipped it off first so it appeared unfertile but was actually too fertile. Either way, it wasn't ideal to concentrate so many nutrients in one area. The bale unroller is a better way to direct the nutrients where you need them and spread it out more. We're hoping to get one in the next year or two.

Cattle look good. We saw the same thing with feeding hay in traditional rings. I’m intrigued by the Greg Judy method. Good video.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to implementing more of Greg Judy's methods next year.

Nice. I like it. Shared it with a few people. May have to see if I can learn welding and build something like it.

When you're spraying in a circle like that you're also putting a heavier spray ratio on with the inner nozzle

That project came out nice. I wonder if disking the area where the hay ring lies would make grass come out again. There is a lot of seed on the ground where there has been a hay ring. How is wastage when you unroll? The one thing I'm not very convinced about the hay unroller.

What part of Texas are you from? Iam in South Texas! And trying to fix over grazed pastures! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Sir!

Might try loosening the ground. If it’s too hard it’s hard to promote growth.

What area of TX are you at?

Yea, you were tightening the bale instead of unwinding it. That's why it finished up all over the field, instead of in a 60yard stripe. I was amazed that the arms lifted the bale, hope it lasts... .. What 'make' are those cattle, they look to have some Jersey in them.. .. ..

I kind of prefer it finishing up all over the field, with the idea that it will spread out the seeds and carbon in the hay around more. My cattle are a variety bunch, mostly Brangus but some Jersey in a few.

I know Greg Judy would not have any thing to do with a three point bale unroller on a tractor compacting and damaging the microbial life in the soil.

    • @TheKajunkat

It all depends what the soil type is. In some areas with sandy loam that drains well the tractor is fine. In Greg's area the ground gets muddy and stays muddy for long periods after a rain so compaction and rutting is a much bigger issue than other areas.

    • @TexFarmer
      @TexFarmer  Рік тому

Correct. My soil is sandy loam, the soil is usually dry the very next day after a rain.

    You unrolled the hay backwards

    • @kylewommer4142

I disagree. You want the hay to spread out on as much area as possible.
