    Fact from Collectors Inc: EMD made several DD classes: The DD-35 was the first and the least powerful, The DD-40 (the one you painted) was an upgraded, more powerful upgrade to the DD-35, and the DD-40AX (aka the UP centennial) a wide cab version of the DD-40. My mother is stalling out on buying the rest of the coaches for my ICE 2 :(. Try to make an electric canadiana out of an old Atlas AEM-7.

    Great paint job! The first HO scale trains I played with was a Canadiana set my friend had. The locomotive didn't work so we used the caboses as our locomotives and switched cars. Little did I know that about 4 years later (1987) I would get into model railroading. Thanks for the videos.

    Your paint job turned out pretty nice. May I suggest next time paint over the tape with the same color you masked over, white in this case. It will seal the tape better and help prevent those small runs you got. Overall it turned out really well.

    Glad to see you wearing gloves to protect the hands. When it comes to stripping paint off metal dunk it in a container filled with brake fluid. The brake fluid will take the paint right off. It's just a matter of how long it will take. Just don't put any plastic parts in the brake fluid.

    Fun EMD fact, you could technically get away with calling this unit a DD40S (s for short frame). Nice vid mate, and great job on the paint!

  • @busterulmer7092
    @busterulmer7092 3 роки тому

    Excellent job Harrison. If your upper shells are plastic, I would recommend using 70 or 91% rubbing alcohol for stripping. Just soak it in a container for about 30 minutes and attack it with a soft or medium toothbrush to see if softens up. Much better on your skin. Your tape job was excellent. A tip is to go to a drug store in the ladies nail polish area and pick up some wooden cuticle sticks to rub the tape edges, burnished if you will. I agree with another poster below, spray either the base color or a clear coat over the taped areas to seal any leakage. Love the loco!

    I just recently stumbled upon your channel. I have enjoyed your videos. I had several trains since the 70s and a couple of layouts. I have all but one of my engines, a Bachmann Centennial DD40X I received in 1982 or 1983. I dont know what happened to the set but my assumption is that my mom sold, (gave away cheap) in her massive yard sale after my siblings and I moved out. I pulled the trigger on one recently and plan to rebuild that original set. I plan to post a video of the DD40X engine and other HO items I bought in a lot. I am building a new layout now for all my HO trains. Keep posting your videos and I will keep watching.

      Allow me a correction. In the early 70s, I received an awesome twin diesel Tyco set. I loved that set. It disappeared many years ago prior to my moms yard sale. I built a replacement of that set and posted a boring video of it.

  • @maddennis55
    @maddennis55 5 років тому +1

    The DD class diesels were NOT Centennials, only the DDA40X , unique to the UP. What you got was cataloged by EMD as a DD40, but never sold. UP ordered the DD35A, which was a DD35 (B) with a cab. (Check the Diesel spotters guide for more details)

    I recently bought a 1960's Aurora Batman model in a second hand junk store, and some kid of the 60's did a crazy bad paint job on it. I wanted to remove the old paint & re-paint it, so checked out a few UA-cam tutorials & found out that Easy-Off Oven cleaner does a great job of removing paint, without damaging plastic. It did do a great job. It didn't do it as fast as your spray on goo, but it took everything off but letting it sit overnight.

    Beautiful paint job SMT!!! And you used spray cans; they can be very tricky to get a good finish, even using the Testor's spray cans specifically made for painting models. You used " modeler's license " for a " what if ? " locomotive. The red added to the white made me think of the Frisco Railroad's later diesel color scheme; a Frisco modeler could follow you that far & add " FRISCO " decals. I imagine Nerf Cat stayed out of the basement for a few days because of the smell of the spray paint!

    • @tommurphy4307
      @tommurphy4307 2 роки тому

      the trick is in the nozzle. you can swap nozzles somewhat, but your best bet is buy leftover spray cans and pierce the can and use the thinned stuff in your airbrush. there's also tricks in knowing what to use as a thinner. i save tons of money by not having to buy hobby paint that way. rustoleum and rustoleum professional cans have the WORST nozzles for this kind of painting. the automotive touch-up sprays tend to have better quality nozzles than general-purpose paints. if you want bulletproof paint (like painting brass), the boat outdrive paints are a good choice and they are usually trigger- pump nozzles- harrison would like that. brake fluid and even short exposure to methylene-chloride strippers won't disturb outdrive paint. be warned- tis pricey.

      Also with plastic you might wanna roll it up in a ball a few times. I use this method with painting tractors 🚜. So it grit on it might be to aggressive. Roll it around to soften it up. You can feel it in your hand. Then test abrasiveness part on another similar piece of plastic. Like the inside wall of a structure you might have. Any piece of scrap plastic from a model. The lighter and finer the scratches it leaves the better the out come of the paint.

    The failings with the DD40 are a result of Athearn getting preliminary blueprints from EMD so they could have the newest EMD power out about the same time as the prototype.

    In my opinion, that is the paintscheme for the automotive demo models and the leasing ones.

    That Athearn blue box loco it was a real American loco. only 2 class 1 railroads had them...southern rr had 1 a unit and 3 b units...union pacific had the rest of them if I remember correctly the UP had 15 or 17 of the A units and close to 30 of the B units... At the time atheran came out with this model EMD still had it on the drawing board so to speek. and on those blue prints it was called DD40....But by the time it rolled out of the plant where it was built it became known as the DD35A units The B units were built before the A units UP RR liked them so much they told EMD to build them with cabs on the end of it...Yes its a good looking loco..an seeing how your layout is set up with DC it should work great... I myself have 2 that looks just like the one you now have ( 1 is torn down waiting to be rebuilt...) and I also have 2 A units in UP scheme an 2 of the B units that I run on my layout...But I have converted all of them over to DCC... Im sure you are going to enjoy this new loco...your doing a great job with you videos an layout Scotty By the way if you research them you will fiind that EMD made them in the late 1950s to the early 1960s

    I'm not 100% sure but I think you where comparing a DD-35ax with a DD-40ax. Southern Pacific started by pairing two GP-35's together.

    Great video but the locomotive is a DD40 a predecessor to the Centennial. But anyway, great video!

      As I'm reading throught the comments apparently EMD did catalog a DD40 but no one bought it

    The centinial is in that weird paint scheme because it is modeled after the demo locomotive. I have a model of a gp30 with a similar scheme to that one, execs the blue is white and that white is black

    Your Bachmann is a dda40x, the athern is a dd40, the reason to a athern is shorter than the Bachman is because they are two different locomotives, the paint scheme that was on the DD40 was an EMD demonstrator paint scheme EMD uses these paint schemes to show off their brand new engines

    Off topic , do have any ideas on setting up Bachman turn outs, just picked up some ones , one keeps derailing, any ideas on adjusting them

    Its a shame that you had to remove the origanal paint job but it looks even cooler as a canadiana.

    Watching this video at first I didn't realize it was from a few years ago. Was thinking you have started taking down your layout, perhaps for a move. Then I look at the video data and instantly realized you hadn't built any of the other parts yet. LOL! You've come a long way!
