I would love to hear from rising art teachers as well as veterans about why you became (or are in the process of becoming) an art teacher. Please, share your experience in the comments, below.
wow that final part of the video when you mentioned that " you can leave a handprint on somebody else's life"- it really moved me! I still have very vivid memories of all of my school teachers. They defiantly left there print on my life.
I have been an Art teacher for 25 years. The number one thing is the building of relationships or community with students, and having a sense of humor! I have experienced a few years when class dynamics were a struggle, but the joy of creative thinking/play and extended family are vital. And it is true, the Arts in general are a survival tool for many, many kids regarding school. Besides relationships and connection, it is about voice and choice. We hear this phrase a lot, but students need encouragement and awareness. Making something look realistic does NOT define an artist. I was grateful to a mentor who helped me create curriculum that included "skill build" lessons and then choice based or creative thinking units, based on practicing those skills. Thank you for your videos. I was looking for a snapshot of Jim Dine and why he makes what he makes. I loved your question at the end. Thank YOU!
Hi Vicki. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. It is great to have someone with so much valuable experience here. I agree with the relationship building. Each year classroom behavior has improved and I attribute that almost completely to relationship building as far as my most difficult students go (with practice/procedures being all the typical student needed). When I took the time to get to know my most resistant students, they began to turn a corner. It has also been nice just getting to know my students better in general...it's like I have adopted a few hundred kids! :) They can really pick me up and brighten my day when I am having that occasional rough one.... and they have no idea, they are just being them. I would love to get into more choice-based assignments. I have some choice but would love to improve in that area. Would you ever consider sharing what you know/how you implement choice and what that looks like in your classroom? I would love to hear it! Also, I am glad that you enjoyed the Jim Dine video. My students started answering the last question out loud with a giant "Yes!". Since they only get art every third week they are always ready to make art. Thanks again for your comment! Happy Monday!
Hey there! 26 with no college education. I recently decided to pursue a career in art education and am looking into upcomming classes to start. I really appreciate your videos! I just found ya this morning and you are extremely helpful! Thank you from iowa!
Thank you! It makes me happy to hear that what I am doing is helping someone. I was several years older than you when I returned to college to make my career change. If I could get through the process with my middle-aged brain, I bet that you will do great! 😁😜 Good luck in your journey!
Hi, Catherine. Thank you for the kind words. I am glad to hear we have another art teacher in the making! I am by no means an expert (I learn something new every day), but if I can help in any way just let me know. I freely share things that I have learned the hard way! 🤣 Best of luck to you!
Hi! First, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and journey into art education. It is because of your video on how you passed the Praxis Art Content Knowledge exam that I was able to pass it on Wednesday! And I hadn't been in an art history class since my days as a SCAD graphic design major back in 1999-2003. Last year, I made a career change to become an art teacher because I always felt that something was missing. I always had jobs that related to being creative or in marketing/sales in a corporate space, and then one day I volunteered (Junior Achievement) in a classroom and felt like I was at home. I am using a process-based choice model and the Teaching for Artistic Behavior philosophy as a cornerstone. Looking forward to what this new school year will bring!
Wow! This is so great! Thank you for sharing this and welcome to the art teacher community! TAB offers so much choice...it is something I want to learn more about but there is only one teacher in my local vicinity that is experienced at it. I have so many questions about it. Congratulations on passing your Praxis (😁🥳🎉) and I hope that you will find this to be a much more fulfilling career. We need teachers with hearts like that! Build an art teacher community around yourself locally, but I hope you will also stick around our UA-cam community here. I love hearing from and learning from other art teachers! I hope that you have an incredible 2023-24 school year! You've got this! 👍😁
Hey, @amberduchateau1230! How did your first school year go? I hope it was a great one for you! They say the first 5 years are the hardest and you should not judge until then (you would hopefully have classroom management systems, the rhythm of lesson planning, etc down by then...we all learn them as we go starting out)...but I was just curious
holy moly so you get the same class once every 4 weeks?! Right now I have the same kids every day. Its only half an hour but at least I can see them often!
Yep. I was told last week that this upcoming school year I will have only 2 schools instead of 3, though. Thankfully! Maybe one day I can live the dream of one school, too..... 🥰🤞
Hi! Yes, I did. I have Fine Arts and Education degrees. If you are a working artist, I believe some school systems will let you teach art without a degree in Art. However, no matter the type of art qualifications you would still need to pass all tests and earn all certifications to become a licensed teacher. Praxis exams, edTPA, background checks, etc can not be skipped as far as what I am aware of.

Future Art Teacher Here! Wish Me Luck !!!✨

@@vanessawarren683 Yep. I have elementary teachers I still remember, good and bad. Teachers matter so much!

Did you have to have a background in the Arts or an Art degree to become an Art teacher?
