Around 1960 Ma and I Christmased at 11 Kings Parade and would wake on Christmas morning to the sound of Kings College chapel bells. It is now the Fudge Kitchen (visible from about 25.23). Before that it was New & Lingwood, gents' outfitters and before that it was Bays and Son, a family business going back to the mid 19th century - originally a hatter but more a general gents' outfitter by 1960, it was owned by my uncle Jimmy Bays who married my aunty Pat (Ma's sister) and they lived above the shop with their kids, my cousins. I loved Cambridge but sadly have little excuse to go there now as no existing family still live in the city itself.
Afternoon Paul, a pleasure to receive your message. Christmasing in Kings Parade and waking on Christmas morning to the sound of Kings College chapel bells sounds rather special. I must admit the Fudge Kitchen doesn't sound quite so intriguing does it as New & Lingwood, gents outfitters and Bays and Son. How interesting to hear that it had been your uncles family business going back to the mid 19th century and originally a hatter. What a shame you have no existing family still living in the city itself that you can remember such moments with. I'm so pleased that you shared them with us. Thank you.
@@LivingWalks Some of Charles Bays' original hat-making paraphenalia from the mid 1800s is on display in the Museum of Cambridge in Castle Street if you find yourself there again :)
Join us as we go exploring Cambridge, England - home of the University of Cambridge. This Cambridge, England 2022 Walk was filmed on a busy bank holiday in the Spring.
Smooth and well paced as always! And what an interesting walk, I love the mixture of the teeming streets around the market square and the utterly peaceful back streets.
Glad you enjoyed it HD, Cambridge is our favourite UK city I think and luckily only an hour away. Just enjoyed your Easter Egg Hunt footage BTW, seems like it's still cold in Idaho?
Здравствуйте, ещё раз большое спасибо за ролик. Всегда хотела побывать в городах Англии, когда стоишь близко у телевизора, - ощущение что ты там , это здорово. Благодарю.
@LivingWalks It's changed a lot over the years. The traffic can be horrendous but we cope with the students in term time on their hundreds of bikes even if a lot of them jump the red lights!
@@jenniferarcher1593 - ah that must be a frustration, I do rather like the system in Groningen, Netherlands where they don't ban traffic but rather they make it quicker to walk or cycle and just plain fiddly to drive. Thanks for dropping by.
