My mom gave me a Romertopf when I moved out and got my own place in the early 90's. She died shortly after. I still have it and use it often.
I've been using the Romertopf Clay Cooker, since the mid 70's.
If you cut up the chicken ... saving the back/carcass for soup ... and add a cup of raw rice to the bottom of the pot, with the chicken parts and onion/mushrooms on top, you'll have a nice one-pot dinner with perfectly cooked rice.
@Caty Lynch that sounds so good… I plan to cook that in my RCC. How much water do I add for the rice? Thanks in advance.
@@Prinzenelleke he told me years ago that he puts one whole spoon of water into it. Good luck
I found one at a Goodwill. Dated12/79. Perfect condition. Looks like it has never been used. $3.99. Your recipe will be its maiden voyage. 🙂
I HAVE LITTON CLAY POT I USED ONE YEARS AGO AND JUST FOUND THIS ONE IN RESALE SHOP JUST USED TWICE YOUR,S LOOKED REAL NICE WE DID VEGS AND PORK CHOPS TRIAL AND ERROR WILL WORK OK IVAN FROM ILLINOIS.
I've had dinner and OMG that looks good!!
use the water for ur plants or to wash dishes...do not waste it...precious resource that we must take care off...and the recipe easy and very good idea...
Very good video and it looks great thanks x
I had a clay pot in the 70s when we lived in Germany. It was broken in moving back to the USA. I am thinking about getting another one. The chicken looks tasty.
+L Boston (Boston Beans) So many people say they were popular in the 70's, must be why I love it so much, I am a sucker for anything vintage/retro from that time period :)
Do it you won't regret it! Been using mine for 13 jahres! 😉😄😊
Holy yum! I never heard of these before...it makes the chicken look just like a rotisserie chicken!
heheh….i'm making tonight, lov this version :)
According to the instruction, before every use, soak the ROMERTOPF for 10 min in water. Also, you can use this type of clay pot in electric or gas oven. Just don't use it on stove top.
If you use electric stove, place the pot on the rack on the COLD oven. Then set the oven on the desired cooking temperature. I use 425 F / 200 C, Gas 4-5.
If you use gas oven, then set at the lowest temperature initially and then gradually adjust to the desired cooking temperature.
Thanks for the nice recept.. Found a pot second hand in good shape for 4 euros..
Katie, Luv that clay cooker. The chicken turned out wonderful! I think I can smell the chicken .....Mmmmmmmm :)
+Tess Cooks 4u I think this is my 4th or 5th meal in it, getting a nice patina. I like it alot
Informative thanks so much
Back in the 70s when we were all hippies (😉) I had one of these. They are awesome. I use to soak the entire pot in a sink full of water. Chicken looks deelish. Jane
+ShesInLosAngeles I was wondering if I needed to soak it inside and out, I filled it the way I saw a video on UA-cam show. I wonder if it makes a difference
Yeah you're supposed to completely soak both the pot and lid under water for 30 minutes before each use.
@@edstar83 yes, that is correct....do not just fill...nest the top/bottom in sink to SUBMERGE AND SOAK your clay roaster in cold water first use 30 min, and if used on a regular basis: thereafter submerge and soak at least 15 to 20 minutes before placing the food inside.
I'm here because Emeril Lagasse just used one on his show. He said he soaks both parts completely submerged overnight. Too porous for soap, he cleans it only with baking soda and water.
@@kthlna5042 do you have to dry the pot after before putting it in oven?
I found a Reco International version at Good Will. It's the kind with no glass lining. Just all clay.
Spring cleaning revealed my ownership of two of these. Gotta check time and temp on youtube. Chicken soon! Yum! :D
DO NOT USE DISH SOAP OR ANY OTHER DETERGENT AS IT IS ABSORBED INTO THE CLAY AND NEVER REALLY COMES OUT VERY WELL!
I too have been using clay pots since the 70's and I have 3 different sizes. I have been know to bake my turkey's in the clay pot at Thanksgiving - so Yummy! The only way to clean the pot is with baking soda. After use drain all the liquid and scrub out some of the left over food from the sides of the bottom pot then rinse both the bottom and top with warm water.
Now sprinkle a layer of BAKING SODA over all inner surfaces and let stand for a few minute even up to an hour. What this does is to neutralize and clean the entire inside of the pot. Make sure to use a brush while rinsing the pot to remove any left over or stuck on baking soda. Make sure to allow to air dry for at least a day before you store it in you cabinet. I place a dish towel in between the lid and bottom pot as it serves as padding so it doesn't accidently crack or chip while placing it in the cabinet. I have had the same pots for dacades and they last a long time with some tender loving care.

@@dianeanton7662 you are awsome. Thank you for the tips. I just bought one at the thrift store. ( brand new in the box) and will hopefully love it as much as you do yours. Thanks again
I’m doing a 6 pound chicken right now. Can’t really fail with the Römmertopf. I do 410 for 50 mins, then take the top off….then take my girl’s top off 😘…..then turn down to 300 and roast for about 10 minutes. Never fails. Stuff with apples and onions and celery. Adds the right amount of water and makes a good broth for soup. GET ONE!!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much
I do chicken all the time in my clay cooker. Do all your prep on the bird and then drop it in the cooker.
I just got this cooker
What'd you do regarding cleaning the cooker?
Just the thing to upset the vegans. Great work. Keep it up.
Seriously though, I have a Romertopf. I don't use it often but I came here to try to learn how best to cook a duck. The large chicken should be a good guide.
Thank you Katie
😂
How long do you cook just 2 big chicken breasts that are skinless and boneless? I've had it in there for 35 minutes so far at 450
Good recipe, plz tell me the weight of the chicken.
Looks Tasty
Hi Katie... I was given a Romertopf just today. My friend had no idea how to use it. I knew there was something special you had to do to it before putting into the oven...I watched another site where they said to season the clay pot with submerging in water for 2 to 3 hours, then you wouldn't have to do any thing else to it each time you used it.
Thanks for letting me know to put it into a cold oven ... I'm going to have some fun with this for sure...
+Barbara Corfield I think over time you will not need to soak it as much, but that is more likely after months or years or use, not one time. Each time I use mine it gets darker and glossier but I still soak mine without fail. Have fun!
It should be submerged not just filled with water.
Merci 🌟👍
I would at least drain it 30 min. Personally I drain it overnight. And I let it sit in water so that both sides can soak water up, though I guess that's no necessity. It survived decades, still says "made in West Germany" :)
Accidentally washed mine in soap. Does this ruin it for good or can I correct the error?
Hmm.. well I guess that's for you to decide. I have a hard time not using soap so i do sometimes use dilute soapy water. I guess it depends on how worried you are about eating a little soap occasionally. Apparently humans swallow some outrageous number of spiders every year so a little occasional soap residue is not end of the world. But I'm not a doctor or anything like that 😉
Hi ? is the clay pot okay to be use in electric stove?
This type cannot be used on stove top as far as I know
You can use this type of clay pot in electric or gas oven. Just don't use it on stove top.
If you use electric stove, just place the pot on the rack on the COLD oven. Then set the oven on the desired cooking temperature (I use 425 F / 200 C).
If you use gas oven, then set at the lowest temperature initially and then gradually adjust to the desired cooking temperature.
Römertopf is pronounced like room-er-top-f...the umlaut above the o turns the pronunciation of the o into more of an oo....it has the sound of oo but also uh...like combining both of those sounds.
Anyway...beautiful cookware and beautiful chicken!!
The lid is glazed. You don't need to soak it.
How come you don't need to soak the outside of the clay pot?
You could but then my sink would be occupied and it would use much more water.
Do you always soak the clay pot in water first?
Yes you have to or it can crack and always start it in a cold oven so it heats slowly
My Clay Topf is exactly like this. Unfortunately in my last move, the bottom half broke in half, cleanly. Is there any way to repair it?
At the high temps, I would not trust any repairs.
If it's broken you cannot fix it, you will have to replace it. Look up Reston Lloyd.
My dear, what size is that roaster?
3 qt
@@KatieCooksandCrafts thanks
I just bought one but the bottom half is coated? Do I just soak the top half in this case?
Daniel You should soak two sides. Never put in preheated oven or cold surface after pulling it out of the oven. Better place it on a towel. Enjoy your new roaster 🙂
Hi Daniel. You probably have the same one I have. The answer is no. You do not have to soak the bottom half, it is glazed so it will NOT absorb water. ONLY soak the top half. That water will steam and moisturize your chicken while it is roasting. It will be DELICIOUS!!!!
Daniel I do presoak both sides out of precaution for hot oven, it would not hurt 🙂 It’s better to be safe than sorry with such good roasters.
@@Diamondsareforever1603
agreed, it doesn't help, but it doesn't hurt.
PlainOlBill Yes, it’s better be “safe then sorry” with such an awesome and pricey roasters. I wish to enjoy mine for a long time, even to pass them down to my kids 🙂
Whats the point of using clay pot it its glazed inside
@@Maria-In-Motion I found a $130 one UNUSED at Goodwill and paid $3.00!!!!!
You just never know!!!!
Did you say 450 degrees? That kind of makes me nervous. lol
+Suzy Rie I read that clay pots should be cooked about 100 degrees hotter than regular recipes. So far it has worked well
@@KatieCooksandCrafts I'm with Suzy Rie. I've always heard and read that anything over 400 is bad for the baker.
That's a bruise on your bird !
It does not seem to be a farmer's chicken as it has decreased by half after cooking.
Thank you for the Römertopf recipe i have make with guinea fowl.
I have ust add potatoes, garlic, onion and tomatos.
Thank to Rômertopf dishes.
I have no reason to doubt my farmer
You should because a meat that loses half its volume after the cooking, it is not normal.
It is meat fed by hormones, and other bad things, and this is very harmful to health.
:(
YOU COOKED IT WAY TOO LONG...SET TEMP 100 DEGREES HOTTER AND COOK FOR 30 MINUTES LESS...THAT BIRD WAS PERFECT AT 45 MINUTES!
