Thanks for the explanation. This is something that is very much glossed-over in high-school and undergrad physics curricula.
It's always struck me that it seems very unlikely that any atom will ever transition to a higher energy level, if it will only accept photons of a very vanishingly exact frequency. What if that photon has infinitesimally more energy than is needed for that transition?
I've often wondered if that extra energy will be channeled into other modes. That's not quite what was addressed here, but I'd love to learn more. What other sources would you recommend, for further research by those of us who want to learn more?

Fascinating how the fine tuning of the frequency and energy of the protons fired at a atom can absorb and release a photon sort of a bouncing as it cools down and heats up absorbing at specific approach, the two lasers left and right and compressed collective and expansion of the collective slightly off tuning frequency energy protons..it is sort of. A Casey Jones effect on collisions..only the trains are at multiple cross overs at specific frequencies increasing and decreasing projections.. this overall in a accumulate effect could increase power in the lasers in shorter periods of time.😎🇺🇸

Id like to say i think light has mass in stages it vibrates at frequencies to give it more or less mass the slower it vibrates the more mass it has
