Just a quick video of the full size FPE Royal typewriter & basic features.
Thank you again. I have a machine like this and it is an excellent typewriter. It might be the one I enjoy the most. It seems it takes less pressure for the proper keystroke on this machine and that is a good thing because my pinkie is weak on the keys. Years ago I had a similar machine with a wide carriage and gave it away for decorations. I've had this Royal for several months and have done some minor repairs following tutorials from Phoenix Typewriter, Joe Van Cleave, Jot and Tittle, and others. Since then I have probably typed around a hundred pages on this machine. I have other machines I use including Olympia, Smith Corona, and Sears, but I like the Royal about the best. There are a couple more quirks that I am trying to figure out, but it works fine. I enjoy the things I learn from your videos, whether they are new ones or older ones. They all seem to teach me something else about my favorite writing machines. Thank you again.
Royal typewriters actually use a shaft geared of of the mainspring drum to drive the ribbon mechanism. Like you said, when the carriage moves, it moves. Remingtons, L. C. Smiths, and later Smith-Corona uprights and some 400-series electrics also used a shaft off of the main spring drum, although the one used by Royal is much beefier, more time-tested, and works much more reliably.
I love the pop-up hood on Royals!
Thank you for doing these videos. They are very informative
you probably dont care but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@Stetson Dayton instablaster =)
@Rowen Daxton i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Rowen Daxton it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
@Stetson Dayton glad I could help xD
Thanks for doing this! That was really helpful! I have the same one and I've been cleaning it, trying to get it working. It's real rough but it's typing? The thing is, it won't advance when it types. Would you mind sharing some advice?
I would love to have one of these big typewriters but they don’t fit in my trapezoidal shaped office…I’d have to cut a hole in the roof to make it fit.
I have this exact same typewriter but I don't know where I can find the ribbons for it. I've seen many ribbons on Amazon and eBay but I don't know if they're compatible with my typewriter. Please help!
Well for starters do you have the original OEM metal ribbon spools ?
I have a Royal FPE that tends to stick and take a while to space towards the end of the line. Do you know what could be the cause of this?
Well there is no answer without some troubleshooting, which is hard to do long distance
Flush rails and re-lube, flush escapement and lube, check main spring for tension, check for binds
re-evaluate after eliminating all the above
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Alright, thanks for letting me know.
What's the advantage of having the carriage move the ribbon, which you say is "pretty cool"?
Most typewriters use the action/energy of your finger when you push a key top down to drive the ribbon, In theory, it should be easier to type when the ribbon is turning from the main spring rather than the energy from your finger.
According to the typewriter serial database, this is an early 1961 model.
I have a Royal FPE-16-6976457 how much is this typewriter?
How much money is your FPE worth ? $5.00 - $500.00 depending on condition
The Royal in video has been completely serviced, just shy of reconditioning, priced @ $ 195.00
I got more than 60 typewriters and Royal FP is the best typer for me, better than Olympia SG1 as the matter of fact( don't tell the SG1, he will get upset and might start acting weird) .
Yes, I find that most machines are sensitive. Don't believe me--just try cursing your car on a cold Winter morning and see if it doesn't die on you. Then you'll be sorry.
