Great video! It was a pleasure riding/racing with you! That little mistake cost us from a sprint finish! 🤪😂. I was already toast though and knew that the hill there was going to be tough!
Heck yeah Tyler I'm glad you found the video. Its definitely special having footage of the entire race to review and check out after the fact. I really appreciate you driving out and being such a great competitor. Any plans to race XC in southern MO or NWA any time soon?
This is awesome. Paused the video to subscribe. I love that you put the power, timer and course as an overview to the race. This really help me understand the effort that will be needed to do one of these.
Bro! We are so alike. My last BMX race was 2010 at the Freedom National in Woodbridge,Va. Made it to the main event and rolled the gate. Done. Burned out. Been racing XC ever since and LOVE IT! Stay Rad
I wouldn't worry too much about wheelsucking (drafting) in an MTB race. You usually aren't going fast enough to make much difference. :) LOL Sitting on a wheel and pressuring someone into going to hard or making a mistake is a time-honored race tactic! ... I was at that race with as my daughter is on Apex Jr Devo. She was solidly in 2nd for Cat 2 17-18 yo when she had a bad crash on her 3rd (last) lap and had to run it in. Damaged bike, concussion, lots of tissue damage. Her boyfriend started in your group (in your video he has on the Rad Racing stars/stripes jersey right in front of you at the start. He was pretty stoked when I showed him your video! I missed your race because I took my daughter to the hospital but my wife was cheering y'all on at the top of the double climb.
I hope you daughter is okay. I am always amazed at how people toe the line between in control and out of control during races. I do have to admit I really enjoy racing.
Congratulations, well done! I came 2nd … to last 😂 in my first race (on single speed against geared riders). But it took me a few years to learn how to train and peak properly and things got far better for me. You will improve too, no doubt! The weight is important - I raced at 147-149 lbs right up to when I retired from racing at 58.
How were those last years of racing? I'm turning 50 and I feel like my fitness is failing. I've only been riding about 10 years, but I was an athlete when younger until Snowboarding took over.
@@MTBMOR my last few years I still got on the podium in 8 hour solo races - single speed category. My very last race at 58 was brutal however. I only got on the podium because there were few competitors (covid time). I only managed 11 laps (10km each) compared to previous 13-14 laps. And after that the strength and fitness really declined fast, because I stopped all structured training. Now I just ride for fun. 😀
Staying focused is key. Nice race. Hopefully you keep this kind of content coming. I watched the whole video, better than watching shows on TV networks
Evan, although I couldn’t watch the whole thing through. I appreciate this video so much! As someone in my late 30’s I’ve been suffering with “health anxiety” for the past couple of years…that being said, I really paid attention to your heart rate throughout. I’m glad to see that you made it through with no issues. When I get into the high 180s I always back off because I’m scared to push too hard. As always, thanks for sharing with us!
This was a much more enjoyable video compared to main channel. Felt more like your real personality and personal insight. Also great race. Keep up the good work.
Congrats on your race! I raced as well so fully understand the difficulty of the course and the windy conditions. It was no easy feat. I could write a novel but will try to be brief. If you decide to race in the AMBCS, no course outside of Kessler will be remotely as chunky, so you could race your hardtail. Most of the courses have terrain similar to Hobbs (even one of the races is at Hobbs), so that should give you an idea. You might like a short travel full-sus but you can definitely do a hardtail and not worry too much. The AMBCS is a lot of fun - even if you just race a couple/few of them. You were smart to not take too many risks on the downhills. There just isn't much benefit for the risk, the exception being the cases where you need to pass someone and they take a B line and you can take the A line (like when the old guy passed you - he's a friend of mine, lol). These races pay you back for strong climbing efforts. People in general hate climbing and most people don't have climbing as a strength, so that's where I always try to gain an advantage. As you mentioned, losing a little body weight will help that even more. Your bike is plenty light right now. I'd be happy to message you on IG or something else if you have any questions. Again, great job!
Nice job, Evan. Hope to see more race vids. I’m glad you got motivated at the end. If you were going to let Tyler take 2nd, I was sending you some handlebar streamers and a hello kitty backpack for your hydration bottle. Lol. You seem to have a good sense of humor and take my last comment for that exactly. Seriously, becoming a fan of your videos and keep it up.
Nice video, really enjoyed racing with ya and getting to see it. Yea I was too high energy and excited from the gun and gassed out after those uphills, and was suffering from then on. Had a mechanical too. This was my first race, definitely learned a lot.
Oh nice man it was your first race! That happened to me on my first several races. I just rode like a maniac the entire time and bonked hard. But I'm glad we rode as a group for as long as we did. Do you have any plans to race again around here? I don't know of any more upcoming XC races.
I would really like to know how you got the telemetry data onto your video. I have had zero luck with the various tools out there virbedit, telemetry overlay, etc. I am on a Mac, so not sure if that is the issue.
Telemetry Overlay. It took several tries getting the gauges how I wanted, but it's all customizable. Once you get them how you like them, you'll go "ah that wasn't so bad" 😅
i've entered my first ever enduro race in 2 weeks time, i'm doing it on my Scout HT i'm 53 so very late starter, just hoping to survive it but also aiming for not being last, i am very nervous, good job and congrats on your finish :)
Nice job man!! As a newer XC racer myself I have been enjoying watching your journey. Question for you.. what kind of power meter do you have? Been looking at getting one myself but am not sure what would be ideal. Also, do you have a single or dual sided?
Nice one! Hope you enjoyed it too, which I think you did. Maybe look at a set of rollers too, warm up on rollers makes a huge difference. Great effort though. Perfect weather too :)
Okay so this isn’t totally related BUT I used to get that feeling from flying Apache helicopters in the Army. When I left the Army,,, I lost that. Mountain biking has given me that back. That’s why I like hitting jumps and technical downhills. Maybe I need to race 🤔
I'd prefer mechanical. My shifting was perfect during the race using SRAM XX1 AXS, but sometimes you might need a half press of the shifter to get it to shift if you had hit your derailleur. Its funnny i charged the battery overnight before the race and I ALMOST left home without it haha
@@EvanSteinberg3 that would have been a disaster! I always carried a spare when I ran AXS, since moved back to mechanical, but I've wondered how/if wireless could have an advantage during longer races. If there's enough shifting, maybe finger fatigue is real.
I know you mentioned about needing a FS for the down sections, but in all honesty, HT win the climbs and in XC that sometimes counts the most. I personally think you did really great, and the HT was the right choice especially on that track. Maybe if your next race that track is more techy, then yes the FS would probably be ideal.
I picked up an intense 951 for xc racing. 120mm FS and on the budget end of carbon bikes but a great frame, I'm absolutely loving it. Could make a great upgrade bike.
I clicked on the video, and I smiled when I saw it was you!!! Go Evan, go mini vans, go 30+, now get the high guy to race, and draft him!!!!!!!!!! I loved the video, big thanks for sharing! HR almost always at 190, nice work on your winter training.
Man I pushed myself yesterday riding my usual local trail because one of my riding friend decided to go "ballistic fast" in our standard. My heart rate was 180 something most of the time. And at one point hit 192. I felt terrible. I don't know how u can maintain that 190 heart rate most of the time. Maybe because u are more fit and younger than I am.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that in the video, when I was like 180 I felt like it was 120. I wasn't breathing fast or anything. So I chose to ignore the high HR haha.
Yeah chest mount with an Uswe bag. I've forced myself to wear it on every single ride to prepare for using it during the events. I know a lot of people use a bar mounts but I think the chest mount is the best view
This is what I'd do... (how I see it) If you start thinking... "I need to lose weight to be more competitive", then it will stop being fun and become a suffering self-impossed challenge, where you'll also have to race skinny teens. Do you do XC for living? Haha thanks for the kind words and reality check. The guy from Norcal Cycling said in retrospect, he wouldn't have dieted when he started because the weight will come off over time as your metabolism becomes more efficient in burning fat/glycogen. So maybe I won't. Thanks again!
If you want contant adrenaline rush, you gotta play paintball and get in to tournaments. You'll get the adrenaline you need in just one game 😂😂😂😂 but its super expensive though 😅

Great race commentary! Way to put yourself out there.
congrats, the second channel is awesome. Hope you keep it going with races and XC bike builds.
Yeah man I'm digging it. I think I can get the video done in the week and race on the weekend. Next up - possibly a road race classic this weekend.

If you want a different xc bike then try the specialised epic wc, trek supercaliber or Orbea oiz or Scott spark
I've raced the epic and it's a sick race bike. The others you mention are sick too. I was beaten last season by a guy on the Spark
I see that Tyler dude kicking ass here in Tulsa all the time!! He’s fast! I was screaming at you for 10 minutes to pass him lol

Check out some of the AMBCS races! That series is starting up, thinking about the Old Post Challenge next or possibly the Iron Mountain XC
Great job man ! I enjoyed watching this race
Just found your second channel. Always inspired by what you do man.
good job, dont lighten up on the weekly training and youll continue to to exceptional
I went back to DH racing in some local events… regardless of the position, it’s amazing how rewarding it can be!
Can you put a bigger travel fork on your xc hardtail
Great video! Yeah, it's been 20 years, but I may need to get back into racing for funsies. Thanks for the inspiration.
Heck yeah Mac! It was definitely fun

i really enjoyed this entire video. i liked the heart rate and thought proccess.
Great video! But why did you titled it 'First XC...' when you referenced the fact several times that you had raced XC before?
Great job. You established achievable goals and held yourself up to them.
Nice job man!! As a newer XC racer myself I have been enjoying watching your journey. Question for you.. what kind of power meter do you have? Been looking at getting one myself but am not sure what would be ideal. Also, do you have a single or dual sided?
It's called power2max NGeco, one of the more affordable ones. It claims to have dual sided power. I like it
Thanks for the reply! Do you have a Garmin head unit? If so what model and do you like it.
I have a Hammerhead Karoo 2
A really good budget PM is the Sigeyi spider. Super affordable.
Congratulations! I want to start up too. I will be in the 60+ group. Take it easy.
Nice one! Hope you enjoyed it too, which I think you did. Maybe look at a set of rollers too, warm up on rollers makes a huge difference.
Great effort though. Perfect weather too :)
I saw a ton of people on rollers, but I rode some other trails on the other side of the mountain and that seemed like a good warm up

The 150 racers in junior men UCI was a wild race
Good job Adam Steinberg!
You going to be at double barrel gravel tomorrow?
what is your bike computer?

I'd prefer mechanical. My shifting was perfect during the race using SRAM XX1 AXS, but sometimes you might need a half press of the shifter to get it to shift if you had hit your derailleur. Its funnny i charged the battery overnight before the race and I ALMOST left home without it haha

you shouldn't attack your main competition when they fall, it's bad sportsmanship.
