    This was even harder than the LA2A’s. Have now been listening to these back and forth with good headphones - eyes open, eyes closed (ears wide open 😃) - and I can say that all the differences are so minuscule that I lean towards them being just almost imaginary like only psychological (or psychoacoustical) misperceptions when I know that NOW I should hear a difference because I see you switching the source, or if my eyes are not open, know that you will do it. Yes - there seems to be slight differences, but are they “real” or just expectation biased? Good job again. Can’t wait to hear the Pultecs! Cheers - Kippis!

    There's so little difference that the device used becomes irrelevant. To be honest, I think it's the engineer that makes the difference. I've taken a mix that I've completed and then used completely different devices, and the track sounded almost indistinguishable. I knew what I wanted to hear, and then dialled in the sound I wanted - irrespective of the device; hardware or plugin.

    • @Mansardian

      Yes, I keep preaching it and you put it perfectly: I dial in what I want to hear! That is why you don't necessarily need all those vintage plugins

    After the Pultec comparison I’d love to see a comparison of Empirical Labs’ Distressor and it’s plugins - UAD, Kiive, IK Multi etc… idk if you can get hold of a real unit but this shootout would be enlightening for some I think!

    I gave up several years ago trying to tell the difference in a full mix. I’ve still got some great pieces of hardware but do they sound “better” than plugins or cheap hardware? Nah, do they f*ck. A little different maybe. But 99.9999999 percent of folk listening to a song couldn’t give two shats.
    Love your channel by the way chaps.

Love your channel but the LA-2A challenge and now this video illustrates how tiny the differences are and ppl should get on with mixing with whatever they have. I've really struggled liking the UA 1176 LN Hardware over the years. I remember having a studio send back a unit to a supplier thinking it was broken and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It always felt a bit dull and lifeless compared to plugin versions and other hardware clones I had tried, especially when smashing the all buttons in mode in. So with that in mind,, on drums I didn't like 1 or 5 as much as the others so I'm guessing one of those could be the hardware. 2,3 and 4 sounded bigger and brighter so the opposite of what I thought of the last 1176LN I used.

Every sounds a little Bit different, some sounds more "snappy", the tail was different to understand, but to notice every single case in any combination ? Without compare you can took what you have - the hardware is expensive and has to include well with good conditions, like cables etc. - for me was interesting the fact the UA LA2 Plug In sounds on the fly better than the stock plug in, which is a clone. And this was no snake oil ( for me ) This here is the evidence for me, some has more "quality" in details.

    Performance, acoustics, and mic placement trump all gear. A determined mix engineer can make a mix sound good with either plugins or hardware given those 3 things. The only gear in a chain that I can really tell that makes a difference is using a quality mic that fits the source being recorded. I feel there is no plugin that replaces a quality mic (mic modeling still isn’t there yet, could be in the future). Even then, there is no denying that you can still get good results with lower cost microphones. No one is going to turn down mix work or turn a good song off because a U87 or C800G wasn’t used to capture the vocals. I firmly believe all are just personal taste and don’t matter a whole lot. Good music is good music. No one even thinks about what gear was used when listening to music except an engineer, less than 1% of the population. Side note, 80% of other home studios I’ve been to will have over $10k in gear and have inadequate (read foam) or even no acoustic treatment all together. I think that’s silly unless you have the given gift of being able to mix on headphones. Acoustics first, gear second. Gear is fun to have and that’s about it, at least to me. As far as the shootout, they all sound equally adequate and no guess is warranted. Thanks keeping everyone’s feet on the ground with these shootouts.

    • @Chaos-Dynamics
      @Chaos-Dynamics 28 днів тому

      I understand your point but having a really good eq and bus compressor will make a big difference and you can get results that are impossible to achieve without. Yes you can do without but a kick and snare are much easier to shape with a transient designer than without. Certain gear has a certain sound to it and you have less spill with a good gate than without. In the end they are all tools but a carpenter who uses a hammer on daily basis will look for a good hammer. Yes you can hit a nail with a cheap piece of crap hammer too, obvious.

    • @alexmacias3837
      @alexmacias3837 27 днів тому

      @@Chaos-Dynamics Your last sentence is kind of what I was eluding to. The last time you bought something assembled of wood did it even cross your mind what tools were used to assemble it? That assembled piece is analogous to a piece of music. Also, preference can come down to the money you are willing to pay upfront vs putting more work into the mix if you don’t have it. I think an experienced mix engineer can still achieve great results with free plugins, to the point it wouldn’t affect the average listeners opinion of a song at all. I think the only things that can prevent a good mix are the first 3 items I listed and, in my opinion, quality mics correctly matched to the source. I know for a fact a much more experienced mix engineer can provide a better mix ITB with free plugins than I can if given all of the most expensive gear I can ask for. 10000 hours over $10000 in gear.

    • @Chaos-Dynamics
      @Chaos-Dynamics 27 днів тому

      @@alexmacias3837 Okay fair enough but carpenters probably like to talk about their tools. Getting a song decently mixed doesn’t have to be rocket science and I agree music is made to listen to and not for scientific forensic analysis. I mix preferably on an analog desk and get good results with cheap old equipment but anything quality in the signal chain definitely enhances the sonic character but I agree any 1176 would work fine.
      For me the process of mixing is a lot of fun and annoying as well sometimes but I like doing it. Expensive equipment is definitely not something that should hold you back, the most important part is being creative and being able to capture it in time. I’m using old 70 bucks cheap compressors and they work but of course a 1176 would be nice but I rather have a dbx160 because it has an unique sound to it. Gear is tools and you have to make something with them and enjoy the process right 😀

    • @alexmacias3837
      @alexmacias3837 27 днів тому +1

      @@Chaos-Dynamics We are definitely on the same page. I also love using analog gear, albeit all bought used and nothing really that expensive. I think my comment is an observation more aimed at the person starting out because I see so much “don’t buy anything unless you can spend $2k up”. I started with a TLM 102, Audient ID22 preamps, and plugins tracking only vocals in a treated bedroom and everyone that came in was always impressed and became return clients. I’ve progressed with time and bought new tools and took on larger projects. I definitely think spending money on expensive gear (other than quality mics) is overkill unless you’re making a comfortable living mixing (probably not anyone watching these types of videos). I find much enjoyment outcompeting dedicated studios with lower end gear.

    1 sounded good on everything, so will guess that is the original. 3,was weird, it sounded great on vocals but didn’t like it on everything else.

      He's changing the order each time like he did on the LA2A test...so 1 isn't the same every time.

      @@TeslaOsirisIn that case, I’m guessing Drums and Bass the real is 1 and vocals the real one is 3. What do I know though, I liked the Logic stock LA2A in the last one 😂

    Oh boy...another round of people who will make a fool of themselves saying things that are nothing but confirmation bias. 🤣
    It's near as makes no difference between all the candidates...and he's probably changing the order between each category like he did the last time. You're literally just making wild arse guesses.
    Please please...just don't die on any hills about this. As much as I loved serving Ls last time...this time will just feel like ableism.

      So you’re afraid to take a guess because you get judged by your alter ego 😂

      @@Chaos-Dynamics there is no reason to take a guess…there is no substantive difference to be heard.

      I can confirm your prediction that my guesses were wild arse. D:Wrong, B:Wrong, V:Right. I claimed I don't know what 1176s sound like and that claim was supported! Lol. My preferences were not so wild though. D:1176, B:none, V:1176. This makes 2 tests where I have preferred hardware, so I am satisfied that the codec is preserving the differences sufficiently. Maybe it's not the best codec, but it's enough.

    I think the think real 1176 is:
    Drums: 3
    Bss: 5
    Vox: 1
    I like these too.
