You don't have to pay the standing charge, you can simply ask to be disconnected and make your own arrangements viz bigger solar panels and battery. The best way of thinking of the standing charge is that you are paying for the facility for someone else to provide a backup to your own supply. Even if you don't use it, you need someone to have invested to have the power generation capacity available on demand. The more we are all able to avoid paying generators for most of the day, the greater will be their charges when we do use them, as provider of last resort - they have to balance the books somehow.
The main reason we stay connected to the grid is the feed in tariff. If we are not connected we lose the payments which are more than the standing charge. The big job we need to sort however is closing the gap between our current production (about three quarters of the electricity we use) and being totally self-sufficient. We are looking at various ways to achieve this. We also run two vehicles. One is a small petrol powered car and the other is our diesel powered pick up for the farm. The small car will need to be replaced in a few years' time and we will invest in an EV. Before we make the switch, we want to ensure all the electricity needed for it is generated by us.
We have solar + battery and Electric car. We are on an EV car tariff 7p kWh from 11.30 to 05.30for all of house + car. Our storage battery only charges at 7p kWh. EV car cost are 2p mile.
Wow. You have blue sky.
We rarely see the sun.
Sun rises about 4am where we are on the longest day.

How much do you get out of the battery when there's no sun and its full ie how long does it last?
Gosh. I hope the sun doesn't RISE at 3am for you in the summer. That is so much worse in my experience.
Not sure vurning any wood is poluttion free. Woukd you want to breathe in what it ezhausts out ?
At no point in the video do I say that it is pollution free. However, it is part of the natural carbon cycle.
